Between these covers lies Memory Lane, an oft-traveled highway, leading directly across the hills and vales of intervening years, to a place once dear to us, and now much more so, Madison Heights High School. To the casual observer, 1947-'48 may not have differed greatly from previous years, but upon us, the active participants, the academic program, the integrated activities and the efficient guidance of sincere and devoted teachers have left an indelible impression upon our hearts and lives which the passing of the years has served, not to dim but to deepen. To provide a permanent return ticket to Madison Heights High School, that we might relive each day and hour of that memorable '47-'48 session, we the staff of ,48 presents the MoNEL1soN. These changes have challenged the educational systems and have presented to them opportunities of leadership and inspiration. In Amherst County, we are fortunate in having a Division Superintendent and a School Board conscious of the magnitude of the task, capable of handling it properly, and able to assume the position of leadership among the divisions of the Commonwealth. We are indeed indebted to Mr. A. J. CAMDEN, Division Superintendent, and to MRS. BESS W. SHRADER,Cl9difH1dI7, MR. J. F. THOMAS, vice-chairman, MR. ASHBY Woons, and MR. HERBERT J. CAMDEN, of the School Board. 493- MADISON HEIGHTS HIGH SCHOOL 'Tqllen qulchen Oanlncipal v One ofthe greatest privileges enjoyed by the members of the Class of '48 has been the association with our principal, MR. TYLER FULCHER, whose ability and sincerity demand both the admiration and respect of his stu- dents. By his incessant and persistent efforts to elevate the standards of our High School, MR. FULCHE11 has provided instruction, inspiration and encouragement to the youth of Elon District and, as is a prerequisite for any really successful teacher stands himself 1 concrete example of Ax i,-.w, 'I 491' . , -. .-, u cu . - y I . - -Q: E wk.-M13 , '. ,. , .-.. . v . .-1. 5 5,3 . .,r , M. , 'Ib ,g Christian gentleman Worthy of being followed. THE 1948 MONELISON CLASS HISTUHY In September, nineteen hundred and forty-four, seventy-seven inexperienced but capable candidates tried out for the Team of Learning. There was a lot of crude, raw material in their midst, which, if properly trained, would gradually merit promotion to higher positions. The competent managers of this potentially strong team were Mrs. Powell, Mrs. McDermott, and Mrs. Kelley. From their fellow teammates, they chose as president, Darlene Burch, vice-president, Betty Mundy, secretary, Henry Robertson, treasurer, Edna Earle Cash. They elected as Student Representative, Fred Keller. Having willingly accepted the undisputed and oft-proved fact that no goal is achieved without hard work, dogged determination and rigid adherence to training rules, the candidates for the Team endeavored to prove their worth and ability in recognition of which they were transferred to more important and coveted positions. In their Sophomore year, they had rightfully earned their position on the Junior Varsity Squad. Though still hampered by inexperience, they seemed to be turning out a fairly successful team. Some of the students who were unable to make the grade had to be left behind, but their places were immediately taken by replacements from Pleasant View, who proved to be an asset to the school in numerous ways. The managers were again changed, and Mrs. White and Miss McPherson persistently drilled them on the Fundamentals of Education. The players chosen to hold the responsible positions as officers were, president, Lillian Inge, vice-president, Betty Franklin, secretary, jean Moss, and treasurer, June Dodd. Representatives were Darlene Burch and Betty Mundy. Having cleared away the obstacles and taken the defeats along with the victories, which ultimately served to generate a fine competitive spirit, they were considered desirable enough material to understudy the widely-recognized Seniors and were now called Juniors. Their value to the team was increased, for soon they would no longer be substitutes but be the Varsity and entitled to berths on the first string. A banquet was given in their honor, class rings were received as awards of their success. Miss Buckner and Miss Skelton sponsored and trained them during this year. For leaders they chose as president, Lillian Inge, vice-president, Betty Ricketts, secretary, Betty Mundy, and treas- urer, Henry Robertson. They had met the requirements and abided by the rules of sportsmanship and were rewarded for their perseverance by being given their positions on first-team and were now called Seniors. Some of their teammates, though, had been unable to meet the standards and were consequently dropped from the Team, which possessed only sixty-three members now. This was not a consistently winning team, but each had worked hard to make it what it was. Lillian Inge, because of her ability to lead and influence fellow players, was elected, for the third consecutive year, president. Vice-president was Linwood Coleman, secretary, Henry Robertson, and treasurer, Peggy Bryant. Miss Mitchell and Mrs. Davis were sponsors of the Senior Class. Student representatives were Mary Anne Shelton, Marian Carpenter, Gerald Thomas and Glenn Ricketts. Mr. Fulcher coached the team through the entire four years of their training period. Numerous activities constituted highlights in their Senior year, including the Senior Play and the Junior-Senior banquet and Dance. But the beloved gymnasium and training Held, commonly called M. H. H. S., had to be left behind, and each went to seek for himself positions on the Team of Life, there to exhibit the training, ability and playing experience gained under Coach Fulcher sind his enthusiastic managers, the faculty. 5 BLTTY RICKETTS HENRY ROBERTSON. 'l22l' .iw 3' '35 4 4 l MADISON HEIGHTS HIGH SCHOOL CLASS PHUPHEUY As we alighted from the great airliner, Gravel Gertie, we were greeted by Cabell Doss, reporter for the Madison Heights Tribune which is edited by Raymond Peters. Jack Whitehead and Patsy Fuller, famed photographers, were on hand to supply the Tribune with pictures. They were eager to get the story of our tour of the United States, and we had much to tell- When we first boarded the plane, we discovered that the Gravel Gertie was being piloted by Aubrey Layne and Richard White, the famed 'round-the-world fliers. The stewardess on the airliner was Peggy Burleigh, who having become so discouraged by her fruitless efforts in the Senior Play has finally given up chasing men. Upon our arrival in New York City, we were greeted by Jean Moss, first feminine mayor of New York City. It is said that Jean talked her way into office. She suggested a sight-seeing tour of the city and hailed a taxi, driven by Buddy Gowen, owner and driver of Gowen's Cab Co. Our first stop was Music Hall where we greatly enjoyed a concert by Betty Pope, star singer of the Metropolitan, who favored us with the selection, I Ain't Worried 'Bout Nothin,' written and conducted by that great musician, Neil Baldwin. While here, we also heard Walter Hudson and his Monroe Mountaineers. His latest vocalist, Lois Freeman, was presenting her rendition of Moonbeams, the nation's top tune of the day. We next visited Abbitt's Department Store, the largest in the East, owned and managed by Marie Abbitt. While there, we attended a fashion show in which those out- standing models, Shirley Horton, Shirley Eggleston and Alice Hutcherson, modeled the latest fashions designed by the well-known stylist, Gertrude Chumbley. Our next stop was Yankee Stadium where we saw a thrilling game between the New York Yankees and the Pleasant View Pirates. The Pirates won, of course!! It was their fourth straight victory, making them winners of the 1958 World Series. Their success was due to the sensational pitching of Landon and Ezra Humphrey. These nationally famous athletes received their basic instructions at our dear old Madison High. The next place of interest on our journey was Niagara Falls. Oh, yes, there were two of our old classmates there on their honeymoon-Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Wood. Mrs. Wood is the former jean Raikesg Maynard, the chatterbox of the class of '48, has just been made pastor of a small church in New Mexico. QI-Ie's still talkinglj We also saw Sonny Robertson, an F.B.I. agent, who usually chases dangerous criminals but at that time was in a great hurry to catch the girl of his dreams, Betty Ricketts. However, he stopped long enough to inform us that Russell Davis, now Attorney-General, was recovering from an operation in John's Hopkins University, and that his doctor was the famous surgeon, Linwood Coleman, and his private nurses were Darlene Burch and Jean Stinnette. From here we traveled to Chicago. We went to The Crystal Ball, a night club, owned by Barbara Layne who always was a great entertainer. While enjoying the floor show, we recognized several of the chorus girls as former students of our school. Among them were Bessie and Emma Martin, Hattie Sue Brizendine, and Ida Mae Coleman. 6 Q g Our next step was Reno. We visited the office of Attorney Wade Henson who P y ,- was busy securing a divorce for Jean Crews from her third husband. fWho could it be ' 'l23l- No- S fill an ia. i I i Q Q I 9 . . . '11, f i' Q24 ll :f'3 J THE 1948 MONELISON CLASS PBUPHECY this time? Maybe Mr. Jasper.j Rebecca Brown, also a former student of Madison, is Attorney Henson's private secretary. We dropped in at Lang's Latest Book Shoppe which is owned and managed by Mary jane Lang. While looking over the books, we saw the most recent book, How To Get And Keep A Man, written by Mary Ellen Hudson. Experience is a great teacher! From Reno we traveled to Dallas, Texas, where we boarded a train, engineered by Brother Mayo and conducted by Glenn Ricketts. We rode to the end of the line-the city of Swallow Gap, and stopped in at Dodd's Ducky Dude Ranch. June Dodd, owner of the ranch, who has certainly changed since her high school days, was rounding up her cattle with the able assistance of Lorine Jordon and Barbara Wilkerson. After we left Texas, we journeyed to Hollywood where some of our classmates have made great careers for themselves. We attended the premiere of The Secret Of The Lost Letter, starring Ruth Davis and Richard Burleigh, great actress and actor of the Senior Play. This movie was produced and directed by Mildred Sandidge. Also attending the premiere were two popular society girls of Hollywood, Nancy Mays and Ilean Lipscomb. From here, we went to San Francisco wxhere we bumped into Myrtle Mayberry, prominent Senator from the state of Maryland, who was in that city campaigning for the forthcoming presidential election. She said she had just seen Marian Carpenter, newly appointed Ambassador to China, off on her voyage for that country. We also saw Lewis Rhodes and Wilfred Brown, who own a very prosperous business. They are undertakers. QCould they be associated with Surgeon Coleman?j We then journeyed to Atlanta, Georgia, where we saw the crowning of Miss America of 1958. She is none other than Betty Franklin, another of our classmates. The judges of the contest were Harold Anderson, a very important and well-known banker, and Thomas Davis, the newly elected Governor of Georgia. We went from Atlanta to Miami Beach, where we ran into two of our classmates who were vacationing. Ruth Campbell told us her husband was caring for their six children while she was away. Shirley Richardson, owner of a chain of five and ten stores, was taking a much needed rest from the problems of the business world. Sweet Briar College was our last stop before embarking for home, the city of Madison Heights. We entered the assembly hall while Betty Mundy, the new president of that college, was making a speech. She can actually talk now! After the assembly program, we talked to Lillian Inge, teacher of Latin, and Marilyn Burch, teacher of Sociology. just as we concluded our story, we received an urgent message addressed to Mayor Gerald Thomas and Council Members, Peggy Bryant and Mary Anne Shelton, which requested our immediate attention to one of the numerous problems arising in the great metropolis of Madison Heights, now incorporated and possessing a population of l0,000,000. But before resuming our work, we silently uttered a prayer of thanks that our classmates were contributing as generously to the world as they had to our Alma Mater in the good old days of '48, 4 QV Signed: PEGGY BRYANT ,xx MARY ANNE SHELTON GERALD THOMAS -l24l' V Y l Qi fi F11 f f' '- f ii! 1 iff' t .'-, , 4 Hill MADISON HEIGHTS HIGH SCHOOL CLASS WILL We, the Senior Class of Madison Heights High School for the year 1947-48, being weary and worn by so much work do hereby unselfishly bequeath what remains within our power to bestow upon our less fortunate successors. . . Iigliting and overcoming many handicaps and numerous obstacles, the team stuck together . . , ,. and brought Iiome many victories. Below we picture the prospective team of 48. W ith the use of many experienced players and some enthusiastic newcomers, we anticipate .1 great year. -I54I' MADISON HEIGHTS HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' BASKETBALL When basketball practice began November 1, 1947, twenty-five girls inswtred thc ctll for varsity. Of this number some withdrew because of difficulties involved in IIICNLIIFIL, practice and conflicts with other programs. As the season progressed further difhculties were encounteredg such as, no gym for practice, and LXIITIS for tunitcly tht latter had little eHeet. The girls who worked hard when they were able to prac- tice learned that all members of the team are important, and that playing together is essential. The fundamentals of the game were impressed upon the group, and, although they were not victorious at all times, they played every game with a will to win. While inexpericnce and lack of practice were evident at times among the group, composed mostly of underclassmen, the girls enjoyed playing and are anticipating another year of similar experiences but will gladly relinquish the many obstacles coincident with securing a gym, if someone will only wave .1 Magic Wfand and produce one for us.
