Madison Heights Future Times FAMOUS OPERA SINGER TO APPEAR AT MADISON HEIGHTS HIGH SCHOOL Miss Virginia Hudnall ot Madison Heights, Virginia will sing her famous number, “My Hr .“ ore of the b« s solos of the Metropolitan, which was composed hy Mr. Harry Single ton, who has won both national and international acclaim as the ration's foremost composer. Having replaced t h e once famous Hans Kindler, Mr. Singleton will conduct the music for which he is well known. TWO MODELS HIT LYNCHBURG ON THEIR TOUR OF THE UNITED STATES Mrs. William Burford. the former Dorothy Allen and Miss Faye Stump, two of the best known models of the coun-try. are passing through Lynchburg at two o'clock for poses which will be taken by a Commercial Photographer well known in Lynchburg as Leonard Duncan Spivey. From Lynchburg they will continue their tour to Six mile Bridge, Virginia where they will be greeted by Bur nice Morcom, the recently elected Mayor of that city. GEOMETRY BOOK PUBLISHED BY DRIVER Miss Joan Driver has at last published a new Geometry Book entitled. “Math-As You Like It. This book contains no propositions, no circles and no definitions. It is a simpli-Tied course in order that this generation will preserve light bulbs. SPORTS NEWS— Abbitt and Cash Win Cup in Basketball Game Misses Joan Abbitt and Joyce Cash won the cup awarded by Walter Ragland, head of the Madison Heights Athletic Association, when they defeated “Stag Basket ball team last evening. Mr. Ragland himself has received cups and medals for his athle tic powers and splendid sports manship. INTERIOR DECORATOR VISITS LYNCHBURG Miss Jean Owens, a former member of the Madison Heights High School, visited Lynchburg yesterday to ad dress women's societies con ccrning modern interior dc corating improvements for decorating the interiors of their club. HEAR THE ALL-AMERICAN JAM SESSION OVER WLVA TONIGHT The all-American Jam Session with Charles Layne and his Jazz Band will be heard from Lynchburg to Amherst. Monroe, and Elon tonight at ten o'clock. Adams of Madison Heights has taken over the duties of Commercial agent of the Norfolk and Western Railway System with headquarters in Lynchburg. The Elon Life-Saving Crew has arranged to have Dr. Calvin Garrett address its members at a luncheon Friday at the Elon Auditorium. An appeal to Virginia farmers to help relieve the acute shortage of pulpwood was sounded today by Calvin Burleigh. head of the Governor's committee on Farm Production of Forest Products. Mrs. Raymond Henegan, the former Miss Dorothy Wood of Madison Heights, has just begun her tour throughout the United States recruiting additional workers in the Hosiery Mills in an effort to relieve the existing shortage of ladies “hose . Miss Edith Godsey wishes to announce that she now possesses “Shaner's Tea Room which will hereafter be called “Godsey and Hartless Tea Room,” as Mary Hartless will entertain the customers with her Hit Tunes of the Day. Cadet nurses, Loricnc Freeman and Frances Campbell stated today in a conversation at Norma Ramsey's wedding reception that the leading hospitals advocate the practice of Dr. Paula Sue Gibbs' Theory to either kill or cure. WEIR'S BEAUTY SHOP Miss Helen Weir has opened up her new Beauty Shop in Lynchburg where she plans to start a new style for wearing one's hair. Standing in front of the Allied Arts Building Miss Weir offered Convincing proof that her way of wearing the hair guarantees results if one is hunting for a husband. a raw. almost futile search. MORRIS, CIVIL ENGINEER, THINKS HE WILL GO TO SOUTH AMERICA The famous engineer. Robert P. Morris, announces his intention of visiting South America where he plans to build a dam which will convert the north to south course of the Amazon River to the direction of east and west. Whether or not the South Americans will approve the project is a much-debated question. ■ ■ o TEACHER OF SWEET BRIAR COLLEGE TO ADDRESS MADISON HEIGHTS H. S. Patsy Smith, a graduate of the Madison Heights High School, who is now a teacher of Sweet Briar College will give a talk to the girls and try to interest them in attending college. Her assistant was Miss Jeane Grant who recently made Superintendent at Sweet Briar College. She came also to help encourage the girl students. LADY MADE SUPERINTENDENT OF AMHERST COUNTY SCHOOLS Miss June Ruckncr was recently made Superintendent of Amherst County schools which makes the first time a lady has ever been able to become superintendent of any school.

Miss Bertie Morcom, who arrived from New Orleans on the airliner. She received her B. S. Dc-gree from the University of Chicago and was a graduate of Duke University. N. C. She was greeted by Miss Fran-ccs Bclk, the Supervisor of Virginia Baptist Hospital, and the National Psychologist, Miss Lucille Scott. RICKETTS TO SPEAK TO WHOLESALE DEALERS OF LYNCHBURG ON PROFIT Linwood Ricketts, Supcrvi-sor of Quality Service Stores, will speak tonight in the audi' torium of the Tobacco Ware' house near the James River. He will be assisted by his friend and former classmate. Mr. Linwood Morris, who is the district manager. MISSIONARY TO BRAZIL ARRIVES SAFELY The Monroe Baptist Church announces the arrival in Brasil of one of its former members. Miss Helen Kost. We have heard much of her wonderful work among these people. FINDS LOST CHORD Miss Doris Perdue found Sullivan's Lost Chord while practicing music lessons at her home last evening. Everyone i now anxiously awaits the re j suit of the startling discovery. I BURCH AND COOPER MAKE TOUR TO SOUTH POLE Misses Lois Burch and Har' riet Cooper made their first journey to the Antarctic and the last word received from them said they planned to set up the Government for the South Pole. -----o----- CANDIDATE LITCHFORD MAKES FIRST SPEECH OF PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN Candidate Litchford ap-pcared before a large audience at Lexington, Virginia where he delivered the opening ad' dress of his Campaign for the Presidency. He promised 365 national holidays to all Amcri' can citizens. Mr. Litchford is especially qualified for this position and will undoubtedly execute his campaign promises. PROFESSOR AT MARY BALDWIN COLLEGE SPEAKS AT P. T. A. MEETING Professor Shirley Loving spoke to the Madison Heights P. T. A. meeting requesting the history teachers not to give assignments in order that the students might attend the Physical Education Class in peace. Other addresses were de' livered by the principal. Miss Dorothy Blanks, who said she intended taking over the cafeteria, so that she might cat anytime she wished, and Rev. Edward Floyd, now pas' tor of Monroe Methodist Church, who conducts weekly chapel services at the High School. MISS GLORIA PUGH PUBLISHES ARTICLE Miss Gloria Pugh, the for' mer Home Economics Teacher, who spent one'half term at Madison Heights High School, published her most famous article in Good Housekecp-ing entitled The Art of Sweeping a Floor. ANNOUNCEMENT OF SENIOR PLAY BY BROWN Miss Alice Lee Brown has been placed in charge of the Senior Play for the class of I960. Miss Brown has been rcc' ognized as one of the best play directors of the day and this play has been highly ad' vertised because of her direc' tion. -----o----- HARRIS AND HUDSON PUBLISHERS Misses Betty Harris a n d Edith Hudson published their new History of World War II. The first woman Superintcn' dent of Amherst County Schools, Miss Frances Morris, is requiring all .schools to use this carefully prepared text. BELL BOOK STORE CANT KEEP STOCK OF COLEMAN'S BOOKS Miss Mary Coleman, the popular and oft-quoted writer of good ole' American poetry, is now publishing many fine books. Miss Coleman has been writing poetry since her freshman days in Madison Heights High School. -----o—— ENTERTAINMENT FOR THE SAILORS Miss Marjorie Cash and her assistant. Miss Thelma Hudson, plan to visit all the Naval Training Camps in the United States in order to keep up the morale of the sailors. Miss Cash and Miss Hudson have an entirely new and original plan for entertainment. NEW HOME ECONOMICS PROMISES FOR THE FUTURE Miss Marie Robertson, a graduate from Madison Cob lege, gives Madison Heights new promises in the Home Economics Cottage. Madison Heights has had many Home Economics teachers in the past, but the new Miss Robert' son gives every indication of being the most successful to hit Madison thus far.

1945 MONELISON CLASS WILL We, the Senior Class of Madison Heights High School for the year 1944-1945, being physically sound after Mrs. Doyle’s tyranny and mentally unstable as a result of all the homework we have experienced do bequeath the following effects: ITEM I To the Faculty, we will: 1. To Mrs. Doyle, a public address system and a baseball bat to control her physical education students. 2. To Mr. Fulcher, some students who will refrain from walking on the beautiful lawn. 3. To Mrs. Davis, some time and a place to practice the Senior Play. 4. To Mrs. McDermott, a machine that will write “I Must Do What I'm Told,” so that the students won’t have to do it. 5. To Miss MacPherson, some students who will do their homework. 6. To Mrs. White, some chemicals and other sorely needed equipment for the lab. 7. To M rs. Kelly, a place on the Madison Heights Faculty reserved for “Susie” in 1965. 8. To Mrs. Lacks, another “Slug” to keep her company while she is waiting. 9. To M rs. Butler, a bouncer for the library to conserve her energy. 10. To Mrs. Stone, a pair of roller skates to enable her to get around the school faster. 11. To M iss Mitchell, a few more odd jobs, since she has such a little to do. 12. To Mrs. Powell, a special heating system for her room. 13. To Miss Buckner, another “Slug” and Leonard to chase around and around. 14. To Mrs. Steward, some boys who will sing loudly enough in the Glee Club. ITEM II To the Juniors, we will: 1. The opportunity to struggle for Senior privileges marked by greater success than we have enjoyed. 2. Boys young enough to graduate before being called for induction into the Service. ITEM III To the Sophomores, we will: 1. Our ability to get along with the teachers. 2. The privilege of having Miss Mitchell as a sponsor next year.
