EX LIB R I S 1944 Dedication - - - To one who by her interest and enthusiasm has constantly kept before her the welfare and happiness of each of the students. She has taught us not only, the finer points of studying, but many of the finer things of life— To Mrs. Martha I. Davis We Dedicate This 1944 Monelison MRS. MARTHA I. DAVIS Foreword To represent in a living and enduring form the life and activities of Madison Heights High School during the school year 1943-44 has been the motive which has guided us in the preparation of this, the sixteenth volume of the Monelison. May we forever cherish the memories of our classmates as we fondly recollect the joys of our school days. May we ever be grateful for the untiring efforts of our parents and faculty who have so earnestly striven to shape our destinies, and who have helped us to find our place in this great America. lAJ J Presenting the ' MONELISON T h e Annual Publication of thi tudent Body of Madison Heights High School 1944 MONELISON IN THE SERVICE OF THE NATION We, the Senior Class of '44, deem it a privilege to dedicate this page of our MoNELISON to three of our former classmates, Ashby Tyree, Kenneth Wood and Carlyle Duffield, who were to have received their diplomas with us, but answered the call to colors which took them from our midst and numbered them among the defenders of those principles in which we believe. Carlyle and Ashby are serving in the Army, and from reports received they are rendering the United States the same loyal service which they once gave to Madison High. “Fat” is serving in the United States Navy, for it takes sailors as well as soldiers to defend the Four Freedoms. All three of these boys were outstanding in athletics and admired and respected by faculty and students alike- This brief tribute is but a fraction of our pride in and appreciation for the inestimable service being performed by these and others like them. GIRLS' BASKETBALL TEAM The Girls’ Basketball Team enjoyed a fairly successful season despite the difficulty of transportation and coach big. Due to the absence of a coach, the team was organized late in the season through the efforts of the players; hence, we were unable to line up a schedule for the entire sjjpson. We took one trip to Boonsboro coming out victorious with a score of 35 to 14 and played a series of four games with E. C. Glass, two of which were our victories. « We wish next year’s team a more successful year. Joyce Goff, Captain. MADISON HEIGHTS HIGH SCHOOL 1944 MONELISON BOYS' BASKETBALL TEAM Since we have not had a team for several years, our “1944 Model” was composed mainly of “Raw Recruits.” Our coaches were Dick Waters and Dick Wright, who received the loyal sup|x rt of all the team. Handicapped by a lack of practice, the absence of an official coach and amateur players, we were unable to offer adequate competition to most of our opponents, hut all of us enjoyed the sport. The “First Five” were composed of: BUDDY RICKETTS........................Forward HOWARD GRADY..........................Forward RICHARD WRIGHT.........................Center PAUL ROBERTS............................Guard RICHARD WATERS..........................Guard Worthy substitutes were: Tom Hunt, Howard Barbour and Lawrence Blanks.
