FOREWORD This book is a picture history of the Madison General Hospital School of Nursing student. Her life in the hos- pital, in the dormitory, and her daily activities, indoors and out, are portrayed. Opportunities for rich and var- ied experiences come to the student nurse. In a single day she may help save a life, comfort a crying child, talk to a United States diplomat, work with a renowned surgeon, go for a swim, attend a concert and take part in a pizza party. Nursing education teaches the dignity of man and a reverence for life. It attempts to integrate the discipline of mind or character through instruction in certain basic and scientific knowledge; the practical application of that knowledge; and the art of nursing, - an art not coldly scientific, but warmly human. The emblem the stu- dent wears on her uniform is the Maltese Cross whose eight points symbolize the eight beatitudes arising from the four Christian virtues: prudence, justice, temperance, and fortitude. Through intelligently directed supervision and guidance, the student nurse combines the rich enthusiasm of youth with the responsibility that comes with education and experience. Here are opportunities for leadership and the challenges of learning. Talents, skills, and personality are developed with the willing assistance of an able faculty and the patient guidance of the medical staff and hospital personnel.
