Collector: Future Tezlcllcrs ol' A11ll'l'lC'!l-Q FOIII' Lakes Basketball Memories - Class oil '53 Sometime during May, 1947, an important event took place - an orientation program was held for us sixth graders. VVe sat for the iirst time in what seemed to us a very huge aud and saw a preview of life at East Junior High. We were then taken on a tour of the building, marveling at its size. When we went home that night and , in fact, all through the following summer, we wondered what high school life woud be like. Would our grade school groups be broken up? lVould we have to start taking our lunch? How would we ever find our way around? lVe were so accustomed to grade school routine that we were, perhaps, a little afraid to leave it and to enter somehing new, strange, and different. Can you think back to September 13, 1947, when we seniors were the greenhorns of East High? We were led again into that big and and were told to what homerooms we would belong. VVe all had practically the same course. During that first morning, that first week, and that first month all was new to us, but soon we were established seventh graders, In fact, by Thanksgiving, we felt very big even if we counldn't reach the top shelf in our lockers. lVe did some social dancing in gym. That spring we had a matinee dance in room 30. How many of us remember that? By the time we reached the eighth grade we were all old hands at going to East, and we noticed how small and almost babyish the new crop of seventh graders appeared to be. The squirt gun became very popular with the boys, less popular with the grils, and extremely unpopular with the teachers, who now began assigning homework. We did what they assigned' and liked it, or we did what they assigned and didnit like it, or we didn't do what they assigned and they din't like it. VVe stated going to Marquette and East recreation centers on weekend nights. The next year our class became almost half again as large because many entered from outlying districts or parochial schools, They seemed a little self-conscious at Hrst, but they soon worked in. A lot of fellows went out for junior high sports. Some of us started taking languages and were put in senior high classes. We also had our iirst chance to learn ways of killing time in study halls, Some took part in our operetta, Tulip Time , which was the best we had ever seen. That spring we made out our senior high programs and learned new terms, like Hcreditsn, majors and minors , college prep course After a whole summer of anticipating the entering of senior high, it was somewhat- of a let-down to realize we were only sophomoresi' after all. Tenth grade was just a little different from ninth. Class work was hard- er and there was more homework. Some of us got into Senior Band, Concert Orchestra, or the A Cappella Choir. The club schedule was too complicated for us to understand, but most of us managed to join one or two organiza- tions. We began writing for the paper or the annual, helping in the Junior Red Cross Gift Box Drive, attending the Latin or French Club meeting. or working behind the stage or in the greenhouse. Some of our boys made the team and those of us who had joined S.A.A. were happy to get football and basketball tickets. We all had a chance to attend the fall party. Twirp Season was anew term which meant tha.t the girls had to let a. few shekels out of their parsimonious graso and which would, if allowed to continue, make gold diggers out of many boys. One of the best phases of senior high school life, some of us found, was the reward for good grades - the privilege list. We were told that our junior year would be our happiest. This didn't mean that it would be easier, but it did mean that we would develop class spirit. VVe held class elections and VVilbur Martinson, Ole Olson and Joanie Bradley won. Thev planned our verv successful spring dance, Garden in the Rain . That was a good year for winter sports. lVe went along with our basketball team to the state tourney. Our wrestlers had a successful year too. and who will forget how some of them tried to starve down to weight? VVe continued with our clubs, and in them some of us atained positions of leadership. lt is always an honor for a junior to be se- lected for a position usuallv held by a senior, because it shows that his older classmates and his teachers have faith in him and in his ability. And then the greatest and last step - in the fall of 1952 we became seniors. How many of us in'72 or '92 or '02 will recall what turbulent times these were. Will we remember how we spilled out of the building to see Adlai E, Stevenson on East Washingon Avenue? Will we remember when we got the Rose Bowl fever be- cause the Badgers were going to California? 'We took trigometry, physics. chemistry, speech. world lit. POD. Thev were all hard, but we took them in our stride. Will the memories of Moon.frlow , our fall narv. Farm- ers' Fling , the senior souare dance. Robin Hood , our operetta., our two plays. and Moonlight and Poses . the soring party. be dimmed bv the passing years? This class has had a number of athletic lettermeh. bovs Who worked hard to earn heir awards and who deserve them. For our class officers, we chose Jim Raffel, Harrv Evans and Nancv Faulkner to lead us in the commencement services. Suddenly it is all over, far too ouieklv. Cnr diploma. is just a passport to the world bevond high school. Rat it rruarantees us nothing. We must realize that we are still young, still immature, and' that we still have a lot to learn. -H N LQ xx 1' n fs ' :S ma 1 485 Organizations Z f fl 11K Qi' M' W :w145?1.f4ibia1.. , , U.f,,fQ.4.54.S:.si:f:'3-L-ihmffeihafiic... -1g.g2gL,z,iubiai L2misLn-..,...,g,.. uf!
