C. set an all time high record this year in the amount of Red Cross gift boxes iilled and sent to children overseas. MADISON YOUTH COUNCIL This is a city-wide organization made up of representatives of the fi-ve Madison High Schools, East High having four. Their objective is to plan youth activi- tiiews in the city - in short to set up as a goal, for all youth, better citizenship. This last year the representatives pre- sented to the Board of Educa- tion a request for a drivers' training course in our high schools. EAST SIDE YOUTH COUNCIL Each year, as a way of learning the democratic functions of our city government, a youth mayor and aldermen are elected by the youth of Madison 's East Side. Wally Stebbins and his orchestra provided the music, while East High students furnished the entertainment., Decorations accented the autumn scene. In a field of cornstalks in the center of the gym, were two scarecrows with punkin- heads7', While the refreshment stand appeared as a huge cider jug, as shown in the picture at the left. The French Club aided by Ken Kanouse served refreshments. Ken acted as a travel- ing French diplomatf' selling pop and potato chips. OPERETTA HOLLYWOOD EXTRA The plot of Hollywood Extra , the operetta given on Friday, March 24, under the direction of Miss Vogelbaugh, involves Irene, a beauty-contest win- ner from Hopetown, Maine, Who goes to Hollywood for a screen test. Other char- acters who add zest to the story are Uncle Abner, HopetoWn's comic old postmaster who isn't as dumb as he aD- pears, Hannah, an elderly spinster Who sets her trap for Uncle Abner, Bob, who with Irene supplies the romantic interest, Debby, Bob's sister, and Holly- wood big shots . We first Won the West Relays, followed by a decisive vittory over Central. Then came success at the Rockford Relays, after which we defeated West's team. The boys then looked forward to competition in the Janesville Relays aand the City and State Tournaments. Although East loses, through graduation, many good players, the track team next year should be excellent and make a record that East's fans can be proud of. These consist of volleyball, basketball, badminton, tennis and softball. There are four sports nights a Week with Miss Hansen and Miss Schrader in charge. As juniors, girls may elect either a dance or a sports program for physi- cal education. The dance Work includes structural, rhythmic, and special activities. These girls also have additional Work in tennis. Those who elect sports have work in skills and techniques in the sports listed above, and are tested ini their skills and dules.
