It was a tragedy, and I was sobbing even before the funeral scene. This was so different from the general run of plays: no scenery or properties. June ll, 1948 Excuse the splattering marks, darling diary, but today I said goodbye to dear old East High, and believe it or not, I cried buckets. ,The gradua- tion exercises were Wonderful. They were based on the IVisconsin Centennial, and eomnience- inent was a little different this year because it was at night. YVell, high school days are gone forever now . . ..... The Comedy, Dear Ruth , under the direction of Mrs. Streeter, was presented on November 21, in the school auditorium. It is the story of a GI who, upon his return home finds himself in a complicated situation, the results of which prove very hilarious. Tom Dyer was the student director. HOUI' TOWFIH The spring play, Our Town' ', written by Thornton Wilder, was produced under the direction of Mrs. Harriet Streeter on April 23, in the school audtoriurn. Arlene Mickelson was student director. This play, which required one of the largest casts ever used at East High, is unique in that it is produced without scenery, the stage manager takes a leading part in the play, and the audience watches as properties are moved about. Covering t-he perod of years from 1901 to 1913, it is the simple yet touching' story of the lives of plain, everyday folks in a small New England town.' xy- .. v M, . v .2 :.:.. 2 Q , Q, 4,. 2 Ii Q as .... This transformation Was brought about by fo,ur decorating committees under the skilled guidance of Ted Stephenson, Lynn Sulis, Delores Olsen, and Clarence Straavaldsen, respectively. As a setting for the dance, and for the grand march led by King Clarence Straavaldsen and Queen Joanne Dor- ing, life-size murals depicting summer scenes in silhouette decorated the ends of the gymnasium. Crepe paper streamers of blue fasteneid to a Wheel in the center of the ceiling, together with blue lights in the canopy above the orchestra, effectively carried out a blue ceiling theme. The floor and lighting committee was headed by Bob Cnare, chaperons and program, Mary Moore, check room, Ann McEvilly and Catherine Ebely, refreshments, Betty Lee Gruber, publicity, Arlene Schmiege, tickets, Dick Thayer. The grand march committee was headed by Dorothy Loughrey. Miss Davey was the faculty general chairman of the dance, while one or more members of the faculty acted as sponsors of each committee. tl Rmmll 'l lkuw f -.
