Leadership, character, scholar- ship, and service are the merits upon which membership is based. The year- round project of the N.H.S. is to keep the Service E cards up to date, While the highlight of the year is the annual alumni reunion. SERVICE E AND LETTER OF COMMENDATION Sudents who have contributed outstanding service to the school in extra-curricular activities are awarded a Service E pin. A letter of com- mendation is given to students who earn enough service points to entitle them to a pin, but who have previously received a Service E or have been elected to the National Honor Society. -54- National Honor Society Row One: Mary Lee Fix, Iris Oi'Connell, Pat Anclierson, Kathleen Sll'1il1ttllCk, Joan Hovfle, Mary Kwzrpil Row Two: Jerald Lenz, Phyllis Lansing, James Nicholls, Ba1'lxai'z1 VVoocl, Kenneth Sachtjen Service E and Letter of Commendation Row One: Lois Cory, Jcanninc Kruse, Betty Butzine Row Two: Rodney Helnikc, Buelah Brickson, Virginia Verlcy, Julia Johnston, Ann Spencer, John Collins Row Tlhree: Vifaync Blossom, Joanne Sclinmann, Dorothy Vcitli, Mavis Shaw, Sigclor Pctcrson ...55.. P The Purgolders played host to a more experienced Rockford VV est team and lost its openers twelve to nothing. The following weekend they upset Janesville ID4 to I3 at Breeze Stevens, playing without the services of fullback Ken Sachtjen who had injured his nose in the, Rockford game. Traveling to Racine, they found the Horlick eleven no match for them, defeating them 7 to o. Racine failed to get revenge when a game Wash- ington Park team traveled to Madison to be defeated I3 to 7. East lost its first division rating when Beloit beat them 21 to zo in the state line city. A larger, heavier Kenosha team also proved too powerful, and the Wea ry Purgolders received their second Big Eight Conference set back to the tune of I4 to 6. Returning to Madison, the Barrettmen met VVest in their first city series game. East - VVest games have always been fiercely contested. The '46 game was fought evenly and was six to six with but a minute to play in the fourth quarter, when VVest scored, handing East a bitter disappointment. Score East 6, VVest 13. On homecoming night, however, the Purgolders defeated Central I2 to o in their an- unal classic to maintain second place in the city series struggle. Mr. Barrett, Mr. Diehl, and Mr. McKinley coached the varsity, while Mr. Mueller and Mr., johnson coached the Four Lakes League Teams. 1 ...Sl- 74 Jack Potter 4, Raymou Mueller Bernard Schlimgen XK 84 - Charles Anderson Norris Ace Q 5, Jack Barnhart x -. Everyone was madly running around in a frantic attempt to find enough football equipment to turn in. The first knowledge of the existence of the package came when the back room was opened. A big carton, handsomely Wrapped, stood upright before the locker of East's star tackle, appropriately labeled, 4'To Tiny - From the Managers . Neil immediately began unwrapping the gift and some odd hours later came out jubilantly holding a small pair of brown basketball shoes Qsize zj. Many people have wondered about the orgin of jack Barnhart's nickname Spider , It was acquired during East's Hrst game with Rockford. jack Cso he saysj had just laid a block that put down three men in bruising style. One of the battered trio with physique easily matching that of Barnhart stood up and amid grunts and curses shouted, I'll get you, Spiderf' Whether or not he achieved his threat no one is at liberty to say. The Kenosha contest is certainly one game no one cares to remember. From out of the mothballs came some IQIO greased jerseys which, because of the chilly weather, the coaches had decided the team should wear. Whenever East had the ball, it spurted out of the backls hand just as if both ball and jersery had been carefully greased. It was at this point that one of those football oddities happened. Did you ever hear of a tackle blocking his own man in addition to making a ten-yard gain for a fiirst down? Well, that is exactly what happened. A fullback buck was called. At the line of scrimmage the ball squirted lazily down the field where our boy . Hack , having cared for his man, scooped up the ball, spun for two yards and then fell with a thud that made the field lights dim. Result - first down, ten to go. ls that why Barnhart wears size 856, for a hat? N The East squad was having its picture taken. All but one or two of the lettermen had shown up. Twenty minutes elapsed, then ten more. Suddenly the lagging sheep made their appearance and the picture was taken. The reason for delay was that the boys were being taped. After all one has to look his best for his picture, and anyway, everyday routine is habit forming. ...87.. .. .4 Coach Milt Diehl Final Big 8 Resuts Beloit .. .. .. The 1946 Basketball Season As is usual with teams in all sports, there have been with this year's basketball teams, moments humorous and not-so-humorous. It's been a lucky thing that the former outweighed the latter. The season began with the usual quota of sore muscles and blistered feet. Though Mr. Diehl often warned candidates about quitting when their feet became sore, the common answer, especially from the Sophs, to the question, HHow're the feet? was only a low moaning sound together with appropriate, soothing motions upon the injured members. Pity the poor Sophs - two more years of sore feet! . As the team began to round into shape, it was again noticeable, as in previous years, that the first team was remarkable for its lack of height. After the third or fourth game, the montony and hard work of practice be- gan to get a bit under everyone's skin. As a result, the centers started foul- ing the centers, the guards the guards, and the forwards - well, they fouled everybody. This went to such an extreme that one of the officials in the second Horlick game came came near to blowing the game from the side- lines after a number of protests, in a polite way, about some of the de- cisions. - Right, Brick? :reggae Ramon Mueller jack Barnhart Ken Sachtjeu Nvil Schlicln Glen Sclmru l'll211'lCS .Nrlclcxwllrx -90- Don Erickson Eugene Hanson Ralph Brockcft Dean Dextgl- Norris Acc- Vernon Moe -91... 7 ,,,, , ,- , OUR OLD FAITHFULS Left to right: Neil Schlicht, Jack Barnihart, Ken Sachtjen, Don Erickson, Ralph Brockert, Coach Diehl For their consistency and sportmanship in all games, these five boys were voted outstanding in the annual All-City and All-State basketball selections. The Central gym proved to be not only the smallest, but also the noisest of those of any of the high schools. The last four minutes of the first Central game oneicould see the referee blowing, but not a thing could be heard. Though the big snow was enough to close schools, it didn't stop practice, and the full squad wallowed over to the gym. Schara and Erickson made quite an impression on the Racine Park trip. A letter, from a couple of females was sent to them - in care of MEast High School. Gosh, how handsome ! ! A An explanation of jack Spider', Barnhart's bouncy Walk while on the' B. B. court can be that the five or six sticks of gum in his mouth just keep him moving up and down in time with his jaws. The fall season found juniors and seniors engaging in archery and tennis for their indi- vidual and duo sports activities with two hundred enthusiasts participating in a lively con- test of volley ball. Basket ball, always a favorite among the girls, was chosen by two hundred and thirty. A class round-robin tournament declared three top-ranking teams in eachngroup. This is the twenty-fifth Tower Tales, and we would feel guilty of negli- gence if we failed to take advantage of this rare opportunity to sentimentalize at least a little bit. Tradition is DOI, in itself an important thing, it is merely personalized and symbolical history. We can point at random to any number of traditions in our own school, some beautiful, some amusing, and even some unpleasant, but all a part of the life we have lived while at East High. VVithout our realizing it, tradition serves us best as a measuring stick. It is the standard by means of which we may evaluate those things in everyday life which are of a more transitory nature. There is something traditional about the copper towers of the front entrance. The struggle which changed them from their copper color to a soft blue green is simply symbolic of the struggle which has made East High School the institution which it is today. XYC of East IHLISI remember that each year we add to this traditional standard of value. To us is entrusted the future, since ours is the standard by which it shall be measured. A.
