Randle To The 1946 Graduates You are leaving High School with the war won but the struggle to win the peace just begun. Many of you can perform a real service to your country and yourselves by going on to college or university. Ours is not a safe world, and well-trained minds and courageous hearts are needed to deal With its unsolved problems. We know that in our relations with other countries We stand for honesty, fairness, friendship, and peace. We do have to remember, however, that Hany nation that would preserve its tranquitlity. its rights, its independence, its self-respect, and its happiness, must, at all times, be prepared to defend them. It is our hope that you Will take your place With the great body of Americans Who have the courage and the will to make every effort to develop and enforce an enduring world peace. --Foster S. J OURN ALISM CLOTHING SHORTHAN D TYPING We were known as ttlowly sophomores when we first braved the intricacies of senior high, and none could have felt more lovely than we did. We were told we had to act grown-up; we marvellcd at the pep meetings and were overwhelmed by the irrational aud programs of the Hi-Y, Bunnyfoot club, or speech classes. When our report cards were favorable, we basked in the privilege of drinking sodas, playing tennis, or going for a walk during our study period. In time we ceased to regard all juniors and seniors with awe and pitched in on the scrap drives and club activities. After venturing forth for ourselves and putting on the first all-sophomore and program. we felt we really be- longed to senior high. The next fall we returned as juniors and smiled in a superior way upon the bewildered Sephomores. Our thoughts soon turned to our major project of the year, the Spring Party. The climax of weeks of hard work, the big night fmally arrived, and, under the spell of soft lights and sweet music, we noticed with pride that we had really created a ttRhapsody in Moonlight. As we returned for the last time, we took complete advantage of our privileges as members of'the aristocracy. Our jny was short-lived; for we each had an empty feeling; inside as we vheered wildly at our last football game, and there were lumps in our throats as we sang;r HTowers of East at the fmal basketball game of the year. We went to dProm as guests of the juniors and soon became engrossed in preparations for commencement. The lumps in our throats changed to tears as we marched through the gym to the tune of tthnp and Cireumstance; and, as we said our last goodbyes, we wished we could do it all over again. J. 41Hunk Barrett, Milton Diehl, Ferris McKinley, and Jack Fallon, completed a highly successful season, tying with Madison West for city series honors and finishing in a. three-way deadlock for second-place standings in the Big Eight conference. As conference standings were judged on a. point basis during the season, East did capture undisputed second-place honors which a per- centage rating would have entitled them to. The entire season was characterized by the Pur- golders, tireless spirit and effort, and, aside from one 9r tWo misfortunes during the game. the team might well have gone on to win another Big Eight football crown. Jim Toepfer, three-year letterman, was named captain of the 445 team as well as being selected captain of the '45 Zor Shrine All City eleven. Against terrific odds in experience and weight, the Purgolders held the Milwaukee aggregation to only a one-point lead t13-12t at the half-time. However, superior force told and Milwaukee Washington tri- umphed, 19-13. In the opening conference game of the season, East traveled to Janesville to defeat a green but determined grid team, 16-0. Facing the weakest team in the Big Eight conference in their first home appearance, the East eleven crushed Racine Horlick 30 0. The contest failed to test East s potential ability and as victory was clearly indicated, the reserves played most of the second half. Following their easy victory over Horlick, the Purgolders suffered their only conference de- feat of the year when a savage and unbeaten Kenosha team invaded Breese Stevens Field and annexed a 13-7 victory in one of the greatest tussles of the grid season. Pitted against the Red Devil line, which greatly outweighed the Barrett mene East valiantly stopped the Kenosha back- field for three straight periods, and then under the telling strain of the great handicap in weight the weary Purgolders succumbed to the overpowering attack in the most heart-breaking set- back of the season. Line play by Werndli, Lampe, and Soderstrom highlighted the fray. Retaliating after their bruising battle with Kenosha, East traveled to Racine to meet the undefeated Park eleven As if to gain revenge for their previous loss, the Towermen ripped the Park line to pieces with devastating power. Led by the great line play of Alan Werndli, Jim Toepfer, Bob Soderstrom, Bill Noltner, and Dick Lampe, the publicized Park tailbacks were repeatedly smeared when scumming, while, in the meantime, Diehlts pony backfield had collaborated to push over two touchdowns for a 14- 6 victory. Returning to Madison to play a mediocre Beloit squad, the East gridders suffered their greatest letdown of the season and were held to an unimpressive 6-6 tie. As usual, the East-West tilt highlighted the city series play. Both teams, eager to capture the city championship crown and doubly intent upon defeating each other to average the re- mainder of their N14 football record, staged a rugged and bitter free-for-all for four full periods. At no time during the game did. either team relax in its oifensive and. defensive play, and as the final gun sounded, the score was deadlocked at 6-6, a fitting ending for a. dynamic game. In their annual conference windup, East downed a vastly improved Central eleven by a score of 28- 6. The Purgoldersi Hpony backfield ban ked up with excellent support from their front line powerhouse seven repeatedly powered through the Uptowners battle line and piled up more than suiiicient winning margin in successfully closing their 1945 football season. Members of the '45 squad named to the Zor Shrine All City eleven were End and Captain Jim Toepfer, Tackle Alan Werndli. Fullback Ken Sachtjen, and Center Duane Sydow. It is going to be a little one all right and if you can read it you are going to pass out there in June. The teacher ought to mark your paper saying 100. I seen where Ken Sachtjen was elected Junior Mayor of the east side. All he has got to do now is fix the streets and get the skum off the lakes. If he does that we will make him Mayor of the city. He has got a secretary there in Robert Carnes. Nothing like having a secretary you know no money in it but a lot of titles. But they wonlt take them at the bank. They talk about sports at the East High but the cheerleaders out there do a grand job. East High had a good basketball team this year a little break here and there put them out of business as being champions. Jim Toepfer and Dick Lampt were tough cookies they are about two of the best all-around athletes I ever seen at East. This Sachtjen and Tom Knoehe they were tough cookies out on that floor I like Sachtjejn as All-State. But in the State Tournament Ralph Brockert and Bob Barth did a beau- tiful job and so did that Don Erick- son. Somebody said that Sydow will he in good shape this summer to pitch baseball they say he has been throw- ing snowballs all winter. If Dick Bailey wasn7t hurt last fall he would have shown the fans a lot of football he is a tough runner that guy he is a dandy. Little Rollie Hanson he could take those humps about as good as any- body I ever seen. East High gym could fall on him and he would still get up and want to know where the feathers came from. I want to congratulate East they are doing a fine job on athletics and their school support is very good. So if they print this I hope they send me a copy of it. If they can make it out then East High has got some beautiful proofreaders. ART LENTZ ASSISTANT SPORTS EDITO OF I The Capital Times Capital Times Picture BY ART LENTZ . . . I have always been an admirer of athletes who possess great competive spirit particu- rly so in high school ranks where the will-to-win is not dimmed by the caution which prevades more mature groups, such as college and professional. There has never been any lack of competive spirit or the will-to-win on the part of East High school athletes or teams. The records attest to this, and stronger support comes from the expression of Purgold followers and from rival schools, both in the city and in the Big Eight conference. That's why I'm glad to add my vote to the many ballots cast this season for Eastis fine athletic teams. :1: :k a: As far as I am concerned, the higest peak of competitive spirit at East was reached during the basketball season when the Purgolders fought their way all through the WIAA tournament grind up into the semi-finals of the state classic, which by any measure, must be considered the greatest in history. ' The will-to-win flamed high at East during the; entire season, but all the stops were pulled out when the Purgolders met and defeated J anesville in the sectional Iinals at Lake Mills. Against Beaver Dam, in that sizzling double-overtime battle of the lirst round in the state meet, Eastls sheer determination aroused admiraion not only in Madison, but in the Whole state. And, while the fates ruled it otherwise in the semi-Iinal game with Eau Claire, Eastis gallant! but losing battle the following night brought further accolades from the great circle of cage enthusiasts. Eastis will-to-win in the Janesville game was founded on a close adherence to a plan charted by Coach Milt Diehl, and how these Purgolders followed through! Against Beaver Dam in the state meet when East's finesse was lacking, raw courage alone brought the Purgolders into the winneris circle after a continual fight against what seemed insurmountable odds. The game with Eau Claire was the most dazzling of any prep basketball game I've ever seen. True, there have been more dramatic endings, but for sheer, sustained ex- citement, sensational shooting, and excellent play all throughout the contest, that game was tops. There may have been for more skilled basketball teams at East than the 1945-46 combination, but I donit know of one which could play a game to the hilt better than that one. I know that I shall always get a genuine thrill, just talking oven again the exploits of Eastls basketball team. 30b Brueske, one of Mr. Smith's lupablv zll'tiils, m'ezltexl this elabor- ate project as a pep builder for one of East's tough games.
