HI FQREWQRD As a goverment so popular can be supported only by universal knowledge and virtue, it is the duty of all ranks to promote the means of educa- tion as well as true religion, purity of manners, and integrity of life. In this eventful year of 1941, when the very life of democracy is threatened on all fronts, we, the staff of Tower Tales, feel that we should emphasize in this issue, even though only in a limited way, the American or democratic way of education. With our magnificent heritage of the land itself, the noble men and women of the past, and our precious sys- tem of free government, we must include that which Horace Mann called the greatest discovery ever made-the common school. Now, as never before, the function of that school is to educate American youth for the democratic way of life, the basic factrs of which are: an appreciation of the home and family, a preparation for the world of work, an awareness of the beautiful about us, and a sound knowledge of democratic government. God bless and preserve us America!
