RANDLE, Principal QQ HE present school year ends the Fifteenth year of the life of this institution ln September, 1922, East first opened with a pupil enrollment of 647. Today there are 1,046 pupils enrolled in the junior High School and 1,188 pupils in the Senior School. Witli the present June class, 2,914 members are listed as the graduates of the school. The growth of the school membership in numbers has caused the physical plant to be enlarged and the activities and services of the school to be increased. The school is the student body and the faculty, and for all of the fifteen years these two groups have worked together to make an institution that would prepare pupils Nto do better the worthwhile things that they would do anyway. The at tempt has been made, with, I believe, ever increasing success, to turn out citizens of our city who would help to improve its cultural, economic, and ethical life, and inf crease the standard of physical health enjoyed by all. These two pictures tell the story of the progress of our band since its beginning. Wheri Mr. Wculter, present director of East bands and orchestras, took over the work in addition to auto mechanics and drafting, the membership of the band numbered 22. There were 5 cornets, 1 French horn, 3 mellophones, 6 clarinets, 3 saxophones, 1 baritone, 1 bass, and 2 drums. The second semester the band increased to 26, then to 34 and finally the steady growth in organizaton has brought enrollment for next year up to 91. Mr. Wmilters took over the orchestra work in 1927 and the enrollment then was 20 players. Next year the membership will number 70. This, of course, includes only the 10, 11, and 12th grades iii senior high. junior high has its own band of 47 and orchestral of 54, which act as feeders for the concert organizations. The senior band and orchestra has steadily improved in playing ability and the recent tournament results attest to very fine musicianship in the organization. The type of music being played by band and orchestra is of a higher and much more difiicult grade than handled years ago. Both hand and orchestra and also smaller ensemble groups are among the most useful organizations in the school from the service standpoint. Band and orchestra have made 63 public appearances during the past year. She has what it takes to keep the girls interested in whatever problem she tackles. Miss Wluiit- also directs the afterfschool sports and provides snappy, rhythmical tap routines for outside activities. MISS I-IANSEN Miss Cecilia Hansen is one ol the liavorite physical education teachers. She not only teaches sports, but has several classes in interpretative dancing. These classes she also coaches lor such outside activities as the plays and opcrettas. M WEARER.S The girls' M's , as shown hy this picture, aren't very easy to get. It usually takes three years to accumulate the eight hundred points necessary for the large award, although a few do it in about two and onefhalf years.
