The members of the class of 1966, then, are especially important, as the first class to fully experience the effects of experiments in education conducted at Central-University. Because it is through attendance and participation in the working of this laboratory school that the person is formed, we feel the senior of 1966 to aptly represent the product of a laboratory reaction, shaped and directed but not overpowered by his 6 school environment. In classes, the medium, and with teachers, the catalysts, of this process, what seem narrow studies can acquire a broader and more lasting significance through techniques learned. It is a realization of these broadened applications, and a use of modern methods to attain them, that characterizes our laboratory school. Clinton Barter Assistant Principal With the explosion of knowledge in the world today, no pupil can hope to leam more than a foundation in each area he studies. His major responsibility is to learn how to learn, to develop the skills necessary to leam and an interest in learning. This means that schools must meet the needs of each pupil according to his abilities. Pupils must learn by educating themselves. This can best be done by using a variety of approaches to education: large group instruction to save time and eliminate duplication; small group instruction to develop individual expression, analysis and reaction; and independent study to develop personal responsibility and study habits. This year we have taken an additional step in this direction. The use of the Auditorium as a Learning Center, the Cafeteria as a Commons, more emphasis on independent study, and an honor system for all pupils has encouraged students to accept responsibility for their own education. Our work with the University of Wisconsin has made it possible for us to conduct many of these experiments in education. Florence Crook Helen Cloyd Judy Riddle Senior High Office Ardith Morben Junior High Office William Marsh Principal Jon Lokensgard Intern Principal 52 QuidowCfy Robert Meyer Central-University's Guidance Program serves students' emotional, educational, and vocational needs through individual and group contacts. Typical activities include helping students to draw up semester programs, to learn more about their strengths and weaknesses, to plan post-high school education, to improve study procedures, and to select a vocation. Central's affiliation with the University provides more time and funds for guidance related research and experimentation. It also results in Central having more than the usual number of UW graduate students in Guidance serving on the staff. Jack Naughton Director R. 1: William Jones Robert Mewberg R. 2: A1 Spilde Ray Schwoegler Tony Pulvermacher Cora Podell Secretary Mary Locb Special Education Jack Naughton Director Eleanor Bowden Librarian 53 Peter Christiansen Ronald Schenck The past two years have seen two major changes in the teaching of math. The first, individual work, involves acceleration; four seniors are taking calculus on the Hill and several sophomores are working independently. The second trend is toward rc-organi2ation; an attempt has been made to group classes according to ability. Next year should see complete grouping... The advent of independent study has had repercussions in science as much as any. Individual work in any of the physical sciences is encouraged in the Advanced Science class, a program which will be continued next year if there is sufficient interest. 1966-67 will also see substantial improvement in the Physical Science course which, with existing chemistry and PSSC physics, aims at providing a solid base in these fields. 54 Paul Dcrose £acjfo$ft Elizabeth Ritzmann Helene Ceorgalan Richard Schurman Ann Eschenbach One unusual characteristic of the English Department's expanding program is its age—the use of team teaching, for instance, has been developing for ten years. The impetus added by Central's new role has intensified this, extending it to greater use of tapes, interns, and independent study, reinforcing the philosophy of rational experimentation. MCU's 11th grade required speech class, unique in the city, the televising of some classes to the UVV, and University financed research by teachers are but three more facets of this program. Marie Gamess Elizabeth Reinartz Marguerite Hasse NOT PICTURED: Pamela Kriger 55 L wguocjes A well-organized language program, making use of small classes at lower levels, new texts, and the latest equipment, is general throughout the city. Central benefits from these programs in French, German, Spanish and Latin, and has enlarged upon them in some areas, examples being the use of new text materials in the 1st and 2nd German classes and the French V class the first of its kind in the city (now being taught elsewhere). The emphasis of the department is on modem ideas, among them the concepts that more than two years of language is vital and that of the use of independent study, and upon modem equipment such as tapes, records, and the language laboratory. Lucile Reid French Elizabeth Eiseman French Joseph Mason Spanish Betty Atkins Latin Leona Kuster German 56 QocioJb Otudfes Social studies seem to be specially flexible regarding use of time and facilities, and the department is utilizing this fact as much as possible. Team teaching, with variations on the large group-small group theme, is widely used. Independent study, linked to this, and specialized classes such as Russian History (the city's first such class) are establishing interschool and interdepartmental contacts and using the University's resources where possible, bringing a broader study of history. Alfred Colucci Carl Krog Snuta. . . Bcda Mackin As no history student can help noticing, two television cameras stare down on him in Room 321. Little does he probably know what they observe. These cameras serve a closed circuit to the English and Social Studies Methodology and Educational Psychology classes at die University, in which presentation and student reaction are analyzed. Their different past uses--including broadcasts of rigged class scenes--may be expanded to encompass making video-tapes of teaching to be used in training and improving teachers. Mr. Colucci demonstrates that it is as blessed to transmit (ABOVE) as to receive (RIGHT). Wayne Kelliher Clinton Barter 57 NOT PICTURED: Richard Bcrge Stephanie Henriksen Foremost among MCU's exciting courses is Mr. Everard's three-year-old brainchild, Allied Arts. Of Wisconsin High origin, in its two years at Central this unique class has blended art and music history with its historical context, liberally spiced with field trips to Chicago, guest lecturers and performers, and other sidelights, and has received nationwide publicity. This year, in further expansion, normal audiovisual materials have been supplemented with a tape recorder in the Learning Center for individual study, for a more knowledgeable student. Larry Evcrard U.U$fo Independent study, a practice now being introduced into many departments for the first time, is far from new to music students. The traditional methods of teaching band, orchestra, chorus and choir consist of both large group and small group instruction, cn masse and in sectionals, utilizing individual teaching as much as possible. The use of tapes and records, especially in choir, is quite usual. The department's approach, while seemingly unchanged is actually quite contemporary. Darleen McCormick Thomas Buchhauser 58 Ronald Rockow Inez Dieckhoff PfujStCoU' B uCCdZOiv BuSlmMS Bdu jCdiOiv Although not radical, the Business Education plunged bravely into a new experiment this year--teaching additional numbers of ten-thumbed students how to type during the O hour Personal Typing class now offered in addition to regular courses. Luella Collins Mary Ryan Renae Humburg One new, lucrative, and rather well-known project made its debut in some girls' Phy. Ed. classes this year. Known as the Ryan Fund, it collects five cents from each gum-chewer caught in the act, and thanks to unbending enforcement, it is doing well. Robert Harris Harold Rooney 59 Shifts in emphasis, new areas of study, and imaginative use of audiovisual materials have characterized the last few years in the Home Ec department. A pacing of material, concentrating on skills during the ninth through eleventh grades, and orienting students toward a survey course in the last three semesters, has lead to the introduction of new topics—Marriage and Family Living, for instance, now comprises a large part of the twelfth grade study. Slide projectors and filmstrip viewers (as Miss Roberts demonstrates above) have also enlarged areas covered by facilitating small group work. Presentations, once recorded, can be used at any time, leaving the instructor free to give individual help. The result of these changes is a Home Economics course fully relevant to modem life. Dianne Danielson I iiduStiioA Vtfe Harold Carlson At MCU mixed-grade Industrial Arts classes have been oriented toward preparing each student for a college or non-college career through personal help from the teacher. In a sense aspects of the Title I program can be seen in the philosophy that special skills, necessary today, arc a result of more independent work, dictated by student interest, and of help, freely given. In the eight Industrial Arts courses this is not a new idea—but the past year has brought a better understanding of how to put it into practice. Rich Bennett 60 Lee Ackley NOT PICTURED Mrs. Joan Brignano Edward Colbert Employment Orientation Industrial Arts Title I is probably the most exciting of the educational experiments going on at Central this year. Financed by a Federal grant, it centers around the needs of the career-bound student by providing him with individualized instructions, counseling and guidance and employment orientation for later employment. Any of the forty tenth and eleventh graders in Title I share some classes--homeroom, phy. ed. , an elective—with all students. The remainder of his program, including English, social studies, reading, employment orientation, home economics or industrial arts, is taught by the Title I teachers. Throughout the program many first hand experiences arc provided, including field trips and resource persons. Next year, with the first twelfth grade class, a work-study plan will be added, permitting the student to work while attending school. In this way, the graduating senior would have the employment orientation and work experience in addition to his general education program. This idea, of developing student skills in all areas, is an integral part of the experimental theory of education. Mary Cefalu English and Social Studies 61 62 BegUuung. . 63 Qtuudmb comprise the second of the three stages in the high school reaction. While perhaps trivial in the broad view, within the high school context they serve as another molding force, developing skills, stimulating transient or lasting interests, and providing a base for responsibility. Activities change us, subtilely or dramatically--and they too have their place in the laboratory school. 64 Cou tCt l E CuttU Co Uuitfe John Allhiser President Diana Capacio Secretary Mary Allhiser Treasurer Nick Loniello Vice-President Carolyn Houston Secretary Dan Doyle Parliamentarian Miss Ritzmann Mr. Colucci Advisors In keeping with traditions of student government, the Student Council of MCU has played active roles in adjusting to the new system and in sampling and voicing student opinion on Central's closing. Projects, the successful operation of the Commons, and the co-hosting of the District V Convention were major activities. In capsule, the intention of this year's council was to encourage more action and interest from students through more effective organization within the group. John Allhiser 65 John Allhiser President f- o nteco Ki tg This year's Homecoming, Pages of the Past, was hailed as one of the most successful in die history' of Central homecomings. The festivities of October 8 and 9, including and Aud program, a reception for faculty and alumni, a bonfire, the football game, halftime festivities, and the dance, were the result of great effort on the part of the Homecoming Committee, which is actually a group of sub-committees supervised by the general and subchairmen. Each controls a separate phase of the program: reception, program, publicity, field, stage, and court. Betty Harris Chairman Pep MCU Forever! -the motto of Pep Committee this year--represents the devotion and school spirit that the group promoted through posters, rallies, and transportation to out-of-town games. The co-chairmen of this crew were impressed by the response of the student body shown by loud and loyal cheering at the games and raliiesaswell as the more subtle devotion one can feel by talking to any one of Central's students. Just ask 'em! Susan Brockett Debi Garner Co-Chairmen l-lohdcuj This year Holiday Committee decorated the halls with wreaths, stained glass windows, balloons, and a Hanukkah display for Christmas. It also conducted a drive to get ornaments for the two trees in the hall, and got lights for them. Holiday is also in charge of MCU's Dress-Up Day. Next year should be even more successful. Diane Bystol Chairman 66 FiaftitCfi This year's Finance Committee. with an active membership of 25, has had charge of 6 basketball and football post game dances, in addition to sponsoring the Fall Mixer with Social Committee during the first week of school. 'Basin Street', this year's Midwinter Dance, was also a joint effort of Finance and Social Committees. Peg Williams Chairman Woy$ AU PA. CW The goal of Ways and Means is to provide funds for two $100 scholarships offered by Student Council at the end of the year to a couple of graduating seniors. One year-long project for this purpose is the operation of a paperback bookstand which this year is located in the rear of the Aud. A second moneymaking activity for the committee is the selling of stationery and name labels. Short-term projects include selling pep-buttons and assisting at one of the Teachers' Conventions for which the group is paid a clerk's fee. Jane Koplow Chairman Cocial The major job of Social Committee this year was to sponsor two dances. The first, Sing-Sing Swing, was a mixer, and the second was Midwinter where Social collaborated with Finance. Though the committee's activities were limited, it has worked hard to provide students with the opportunity to get together and have a good time. Marta Holmgren Chairman 67 A. F. £. The American Field Service is a nation-wide organization which strives for peace and brotherhood through the exchange of students between countries. The Central AFS committee is a Student Council committee set up to finance AFSers and to make them feel at home in their new and different environment. Cathy Burrows Chairman C. f. c. The Central Improvement Committee, known commonly as CIC, carries on various service projects during the year. The committee sells milk at lunch, making a steady profit, and conducts an annual old-clothes drive for charity, in addition to periodically painting and repainting wastebaskets to brighten Central's halls. Virginia Burley Chairman LMbAiul R)um L Though the membership is small this job is an important one. The members each work for a week in the office after school. The girl in charge checks the articles in the Lost and Found, returns those with identification, and helps anyone finding or losing something. In January the Lost and Found held its semester sale. At this time all articles not claimed were sold. Karen Meucr Chairman 68 XwjdbQM: fiM QewiCto Walk together, talk together, 0 ye people of the earth; Then and only shall ye have peace. Through the American Field Service, 3,085 foreign students from 59 countries were brought to the United States this year to study in high schools. As a result I am here at Central--about 15. 000 miles from my home in Prachuabkirikhan, Thailand, which is surrounded by mountains and the ocean. I used to think that I would be lonely and homesick in America, but on the contrary when I came I found the friendliest people that I have ever met. Everywhere I go in school, even in class and study hall, people stop and say 'Hi' to me. It makes me proud and happy. This is not because I am a foreign student but because I share the students' responsibilities, likes, and dislikes. When I go back to my country in July I will feel very sad that I have to leave everything behind—it makes me saddest when 1 realize that in a short time there will be no more Central, the school I have studied in during my year in America. Certainly there are some gifts that I will take home but the most valuable and important tiling I will take with me is the understanding and the friendship that will last forever. Nuntachai ( Charlie ) Peansanong Being an AFS student is the most marvelous experience one can have. Here wc come, young people from all over the world, full of curiosity, eager to observe and learn. Being able to share a year with an American family puts us in contact with the intimate aspects of your life; the luggage we take home is composed of friendship, love, and understanding for the United States. For a while we were a part of America; forever we will keep the impressions we got and the lessons we learned. Even though today we have the most modem ways of communication, we still maintain a lack of contact between peoples and nations and this is the most important aspect of AFS--the approximation of culture by young people. It's just great to be here! How wonderful was the first snow, the spectacle of the colorful trees; how much fun to watch football games (even without understanding them), to try (without success) to dance, to go tobogganing on a cold winter night or to cheer for Central at basketball games! I found the life in American school very exciting, so many activities, clubs, games; we get so close together that way! You can't imagine how much I enjoyed being at Central, feeling like all of you. I was very fortunate in living with such a marvelous family, the Samples, that really knew how to make this year completely happy and unforgettable for me. The Samples: Mr. Sample, Greg, Mrs. Sample, Claudia Dutra, Pete; Debby, Joan, Phoebe. This time 1 spent with you was much more than a simple year, it was a whole life, replete with new sensations and wonderful experiences. My best thanks to all of you. 69 Claudia Dutra C H hj Couwfce v The Candy Counter began operating under difficulties this year. It was moved near the Gym to accommodate the lunch-eaters, which made it impossible to sell candy after school, and lack of storage space made it necessary to purchase a metal cabinet, which threw us into the hole. The Madison Mirror is Central-University's own newspaper and is published fourteen times per school year. The Mirror has been in existence for almost fifty years. Few students who are not involved in its publication realize how much hard work goes into creating their newspaper. Hard work on the part of the staff and its advisor is required from the point assignments are given out until the finished product is distributed to the Central students in homerooms. Therefore in an informal manner the Tychoberahn has sought not only to record but to enlarge upon the events of the year, setting them in the personal perspective of a very few people. This is a subjective view of Central-University, true--but who can be objective about an institution which shapes him in so many ways?
