Mr. Wohlferd completed this period of service on January 12. 1961. In a special presentation in December. Mr. Wohlferd was given a beagle puppy as a gift from the Student Council. Pete promptly named him Tiger in honor of Central High School. Tiger will have many happy days ahead of him, roaming through the deep, dark woods of northern Wisconsin where Mr. Wohlferd has a beautiful cabin in which he intends to spend much of his leisure time after retirement. Pete has made many friends in his many years at Central High, and everyone is sorry to see him leave. All Centralites wish him the best of everything in the future. So Go get ’em. Tiger! And Goodbye. They not only defeated West in a game in which exhausted Central rooters saw Coach Harris being carried off in triumph on the shoulders of his squad, but watched Ron Dinte-mann set a new Central scoring record of 38 points against Janesville; the next night the determined squad dropped Park from a share of the Big Eight title. Wow’. That Park-Central game!” Devoted to the end JUST WAIT - THEY’LL ALL BE BACK NEXT YEARI 105 THE BASKETBALL STORY . . . . . . by Meric Sweet This is a story about Central High School's basketball position. It concerns the players, coaches, managers, staunch followers, and other spectators. The outcome on Friday or Saturday night is all that matters to many people. These are the ones who don't know about the daily grueling practices, scout reports, chalk talks, and charts. They don’t realize the hours of work put in by the basketball squad and coaches; they figure the squad just happens to be there and the outcome is mechanical. They're wrong - dead wrong. This program was Initiated by many people, starting with the coaching staff. Head Coach Bob Harris has just completed his fourth season at Central High. Assistant Coaches John and rookie Pete Olson have just completed their second and first seasons Look at the team! Its youth, and the building that has already taken place lead the way to a bright future. These kids arc good kids. Playing schools many times the size of Central, these boys gave everything they had. The finale of this season exemplified this. Central won four of its last five games, including victories over the much bigger Regents, the high-scoring Bluebirds; they defeated Racine Park in the season's last game. This game killed Park's hopes for a tie for the Big-Eight championship. Problems? - yes. There are and always will be many. There are injuries that need attention, shortcomings in fundamentals that need to be ironed out, and attitudes that are detrimental to the cause of the team. All of this is a part of basketball. respectively. The tremendous . mount of work this trio of men puts In shows their extraordinary devotion to the great game of basketball. For instance, Mr. Harris spends many hours of his own time night after night writing and printing many-page scout reports. In addition to his assistance with the varsity, John Olson works constantly with seventh, eighth, and ninth graders, preparing them for the future. Aside from Pete Olson’s coaching of the soph team, he aids the varsity with his thorough knowledge of basketball. Invaluable help in many departments is provided by the managers. The staunch followers and faculty members inspire the team in their drive to win. Basketball hopes at Central are bright, and with help from everyone, they will tmly shine. Who knows . . . maybe in the near future . . . this writer hopes that Central and basketball will become synonymous. THIS IS A TRIBUTE TO RON DINTEMANN, WHO EXEMPLIFIES THE TRUE ATHLETE. HE REPRESENTS EVERYTHING WE STAND FOR AT CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL. AMONG THESE QUALITIES ARE CHARACTER. LEADERSHIP, SCHOLARSHIP. AND ATHLETIC ABILITY. ACE IN THE HOLE Victory over West; This was the upset of the season in the Big-Eight and in the city. It was a tribute to a bunch of kids, fighting their hearts out each week, only to falter under their own mistakes and weariness. For his well-planned attack and solid defense that handed West its seventh defeat in 13 Big-Eight starts, Coach Bob Harris was given a ride off the court on his players’ shoulders. It wasn't a smooth ride by any means, but to Harris that was the least of his cares. Monte McCormick Wis. State Journal Big-Eight player selections: In praising the first team, the writer would like to pay special tribute to Dinteniann, one of the hardest workers he has ever watched. Monte McCormick Wis. State Journal Victory over Park: When It was all over, Dlnte-mann collapsed from sheer exhaustion in the dressing room, and Harris, who probably could have been receiving congratulations all night, nurtured Dintemann back into the land of the living. Then all Dintemann did Sunday was to give a sermon on 'Know Thyself at the First Baptist Church. ” Lew Cornelius Capital Times Ron Dintemann did he ever play a ball game he got 30 points and in the first half he was open often but they couldn't locate him. Ron can shoot from out on the court and boy he’s nifty going in for basket too. He’s good team man He's one of the best at Central in years. Roundy Wis. State Journal Capt. Bill's Oscars and medals Cross country, a major fall sport, is definitely on the upswing at Central. Much of this renewed interest is due to the 1960 performance of Big-Eight individual champion, Bill Aldrich. Aldrich is the best runner in the history of the sport at Central. Competing against top competition in fields ranging from forty to one hundred and sixty runners, Bill won the Big-Eight, was second in the City Meet, eighth in the State, third in the State Sectional, and fifteenth in the big Midwest. A nucleus of three boys, Aldrich, Dick Crabtree, and Ron Opelt, gave the squad the spark of interest and desire needed to make the entire group a competitive team. Prospects are bright for 1961. Six lettermen return: Aldrich, Opelt, Olmstead, Muehl, Roberts, and Whipple. A fifteen-minute color movie, which was shown many times around school, also stimulated general interest in the sport. 109 HOCKEY 1960-61 The 1960-61 Hockey Team was one of the better teams coach George Stockton has had. The pucksters wound up the season with a 6-4-2 record and placed second in the city and state. Capt. Rick Suicr was named to the first Wisconsin High School All-Star Hockey Team. This is a fairly young team with lots of potential for next year. They were assisted by two former Central wrestlers now attending the University. Bob Whipple and Dan Shea. The squad was quite green and it took most of the season before the coaching began to show definite results. Aiming for state titles, Bob Green and Jim Dean qualified for the sectionals but were stopped there. Captain Cecil Degenhardt was the only senior on the team. Like many of Central's sports, prospects for next year are very promising. Dave Kamm. Fred Shidemann Because of an early Tychoberahn deadline, only returning lettermen of SPRING SPORTS - 1961 are presented. GOLF: John Christianson and Bill Cunningham. (Missing: Bill Rohde). The team is coached by Mr. Schurrnan. Jim Schlatter and Mike Remington are promising sophomore candidates. TENNIS: Dan Shapiro. Bill Lee, Curtis Shawkey. Dave Jolivette. (Missing: Rex Bross and Roger Steeper). This year's tennis squad has potentially more experience than in previous years. The te3m is coached with mathematical precision by Mr. Parr. Probability, permutations, combinations. and statistics almost promise a good season. BASEBALL: Joe Engelhart. Dave Kelliher, Ron Dintemann, Rick Suter. The team is coached by Mr. Pollock. This, too, will be a young squad and team that shows good promise for the future. TRACK: Lee Waldo'n, Larry Maxon, Ted Grint-jes, Bill Aldrich, Jon Novick, Cecil Degenhardt. (Missing: Joe Puccio). This team is coached by Mr. Rooney. He is assisted in the field events by Mr. Harris. This team should be quite strong in the distance runs; it is bolstered by many runners from the cross-country team. 112 WE SALUTE THE PRESENT AND FUTUKt OF CENTRAL’S ATHLETIC PROGRAM With the developmental ability of our head coaches and the enthusiasm of our younger and newer coaches, plus the obvious potential of outstanding athletes from seventh grade on up.
