x.Ā CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL MADISON, WISCONSIN Central ā60 Faculty Seniors Juniors Sophomores Sports A ctivities Junior High Central's annual Homecoming show usually produces some ingenious floats. and this year was no exception. It took a great ā¦leal of work and stacks of crepe paper to put them together; hut everyone agreed that the effort was well sjkmiI when the marvelous creations were proudly displayed before the crowd. 6 Apparently becoming an annual affair, the Christmas party was held again in the boy's gym. As the expression says, it was bigger and better than ever. With Mr. Brown leading the singing, ami with Santa Claus paying a surprise visit, everyone had a very merry Christinas. 7 The support of our athletic teams this year demonstrated the tremendous spirit of the student body. t least one busload of students was present at almost ever) out-of-town football and basketball game. The football team responded with a totull) unexpected tie for third place in the Big Right, and the basketball team provided many thrills in an unusual number of close games. Pep auds presented witty material effectively, and the halls of Central High were covered with banners and posters put up by the Pep Committee. It has been a spirited school year, and one that has demonstrated our pride in Central. a My A.F.S. Sister bv Kav Beyer ThiĀ ycur our school, a- well a ray family, i very' fortunate to have with uĀ an mericun Field Service student. Mi - Flory Mendez. She arrived in Madison 28 from her home, which i- in .VĀ stn Kica. She i enrolled in Out ml as a senior ami is taking four major subjects. This i not her fir t trip to North America. Two years ago āhe represented her country in dan ada at the International Convention for (iirl Guides. Flory was very happy have been chosen a- the foreign exchange student to Madison, even though there are many problems that she knew she would have lo overcome. Her major problem now is Knglish. lthough she ha had four year of it in school, she find it very difficult to understand and speak. She also ftnilH it hard to adapt herself to our climate. In Costa Rica the temperature ranges from 50 75 degree all yrar 'round. She is bulking forward to winter with great anxiety, because -hr has never seen actual snow. This is Floryās fir t experience at a Co-educational school. She finds this can he distracting at limes. She attended her first football game when Ontral defeated Monona drove. Although she did not understand the game of football itself, she found it very interevting to watch the actions of the -peclators. She thinks our class room procedure is ex-cel lent because in the high school of Costa Rica the student do not participate in class discussions. Flory i- hoping to bring to us an understanding of her country, its pc- pie. its customs it- beliefs, and it ideals. In turn. I hope that we all can help her gain an understanding of the Coiled Stales o that she will he able to pa this understanding to her friends ami family at home. This article texts reprinted from the Madison Mirror 9 Madison Central has the great good fortune to he connected with the Madison Vocational and Adult School. Facilities of this building are made available to our student?- through the commercial, trades, and general courses offered here; and pupils an able to learn many skills which they may nut to use after leaving school. Thus, the school presents a rounded program to its student body, and the ents have an opportunity to receive training in v fields of interest. 10 Fur the past three years Central has offered an advanced program fur math and English students. It i an attempt tu make the curriculum fit the ability of the students. For those who satisfactorily complete these courses, an opportunity to pain college credit is offered. By passing a test in either subject a student may pain a few credits, or he allowed to skip some college courses. However, this is not the main function of the program. It offers a challenge to the students by presenting material which fits their abilities, and which better prepares them for college. n 12 The greatest good that an educational institution ran contribute to its student body is to help each member to discover himself, and then to help him develop and sharpen those talents in which he has confidence. It may take several yeais to discover those talents which at first may he almost hidden. In developing these talents he will undoubtedly discover new ones. In this way he comes closer to discovering himself. MR. EARL D. BROWN Princiftal 13 MR.
