Madison. Wisconsin . c r TYCHOBERAHN - the Indian word for Four Eakes - our theme Zable of Contents FACULTY SENIORS JUNIORS SOPHOMORES ORGANIZATIONS ArTTVTTTTTQ m f The section pictures in this book are vivid reminders of the wealth of beauty that belongs to every Centralite as well as to every Madisonian. Only a few communities in the United States are so fortunate as to have the combination of sparkling lakes, rolling tree-covered hills, winding streams and lagoons all within the metropolitan area. All of this grandeur should be a mute reminder to the individual that he must make his school and city a place worthy of this setting. MR. WILLIAM MARSH Those of us who have worked under Mr. Marsh's direction on various committees - dances, elections, or class rings - know how much efficient planning. work, and energy he puts into his job. MISS NINA FREDRICKSON A student who needs guidance in choosing a course of study, a college, or a career has only to step into the office of Miss Nina Fredrickson. He will be greeted with a friendly smile and will receive helpful advice and information. faculty Academic education is the most important job of our high school career. We are fortunate here at Central to have a broad program of extra-curricular activities, which many times seem to shadow our true purpose in school. The answer to a successful school life is a balance between these two very important things. An annual , a record of school days, often does an exceptional job of covering activities, but too often forgets classroom work. Because of this we have broadened our faculty section this year to cover the faculty’s job, us. BENJAMIN H. ASHMAN FLORENCE MORRIS ROBERT ALW1N Mathematics Geometric Christmas tree ornaments and daily trips to the blackboard to explain Propositions and Corollaries are memories never to be forgotten by Central’s math students. English Everyone who has studied English recalls with mixed emotions the moment when the teacher called on him to give his oral report before the class. ELIZABETH RITZMANN LLOYD BESANT ROBERT herried ROBERT TOTTINGHAM Science The first day the Biology class worked on dissecting frogs holds a memory for any student who has worked in the science department. The correct way to light a Bunsen Burner is learned after several days of burning one’s fingers in the Chemistry Lab. ROLAND SPRECHER jCanguages Verb conjugation, synopsis, case and tenses are familiar terms to the language student. The Centralite may choose a two year course in Latin, French, or Spanish. LVC1LE REID JOAN KELLY BEDA DONALD MACfdN WENDT VICTOR LANNING JOHN McDowell ELIZABETH E1SENMAN Social Studies Map study, American Observers, and P. O. D. surveys are recalled by students in the Social Studies Department. Term papers and reports are other activities which these students remember. Commercial Students taking Commercial subjects remember the Speed and Accuracy tests in Shorthand and Typing. Bookkeeping and Office Practice prepare the Centralitc for a good secretarial job. JOAN FREDRIXON HAROLD POLLOCK % WALTER FANDRICH DARLEEN McCORMICK Music Many a Centralite remembers the 7:45 Thursday morning Choir rehearsals. Half-time football shows and Pop Concerts are pleasant memories held by those students with instrumental talent. Home S-couomics Central girls remember the thrill of pride that they felt when their first Home Economics project . . a blouse or skirt . . was finished and ready to wear. JANE ROBERTS SHIRLEY FINGER JOHN C. EDWARD BOND COLBERT Jhdust rial Arts Shop class presents a number of interesting projects to the boy interested in Industrial Arts. Central boys may study architectural and mechanical drawing, as well as blue print reading and shop sketching. This provides a basic foundation for future trade course work. Art Poster paint and enameled jewelry remind the art student of the interesting and profitable class periods spent in art or art metal class. FRANK LINDL ROBERT HARRIS HAROLD ROONEY Physical Education Tennis, Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, and Baseball are activities enjoyed by all Physical Education Students. Every Central girl remembers the days when her hair hung limply due to an hour spent in swimming class with a leaky swim cap. JOANNE OSCAR MRS. CORA PODELL MRS. Class Officers President..................................ARLYN WHITE Secretary.................................SHARON LEWIS Vice President...................JOHN HILLIARD June 1956, and we as seniors look back and remember our three years here at Central. We have gained a valuable background for whatever we may attempt in the future. Leaders, athletes, and scholars have come from our midst to bring honors to our whole class. In 1953 we entered Central Senior High as sophomores. One of our first activities was working for new band uniforms. We elected two girls to the Homecoming Court. We also elected class officers and had our first experience with semester exams. As juniors we became more active in school affairs. One of our class members served as Student Council President. We had the majority of the leads in the play You Can't Take It With You . Tropicana, the Junior Prom which we all worked hard on, had as its king, our class President, with his date as queen. We were well represented on the football, wrestling, and baseball squads. As a class we voted on and chose our class rings. The Operetta Martha was presented with several of our class members playing the leads and many more working in the choruses and on committees. Four of us were elected to the National Honor Society. Our last activity was the campaigning for and the election of Student Council officers. In September of 1955 we reached the height of our High School careers. We became Seniors, and took over the responsibilities of leading the rest of the student body. Three of our class members took over the executive positions of the Student Council. We elected class officers, and picked our senior committees. The Ice Cream Committee began eany in ttie year to earn funds for our senior activities. We not only elected members of the Homecoming Court, but we chose the Homecoming Queen as well. We were proud to have been the first class at Central to present floats at a Homecoming parade and we'll never forget the Saturday we worked on them. A prize to be awarded for the best float made competition between senior homerooms great. Hi-Y sponsored the annual Homecoming dance after the game, which we won. We were justly proud when one of our class members won second place in the I Speak for Democracy contest. Our class members held important offices such as Annual editor. Mirror editor. Girls' Club president and Student Council president. Our class presented the student body with key members in the band, orchestra, choir and on the athletic field. Christmas arrived, and we saw the halls gaily decorated and heard the choir sing the Christmas program for the last time. Christmas vacation brought parties and other activities for all of us. Then back to school and preparation for the all important semester exams. Shakespeare and Greek Lit are never to be forgotten memories of those of us in Senior English. Invitations, gowns and cards were chosen by the class and we realized that graduation was not far away. Variety show plans kept many of us busy while others worked on senior activities - - such as class night, banquet, picnic and the dance. Awards were given for athletic and commercial achievements. Several more of our classmates were elected to the National Honor Society, and some received Honor Pins. In June we received our final copies of the Tychoberahn, and we began the exchange of class cards and pictures. On June 15, 1956 our high school days came to a close. We now look toward college, employment or service with the Armed Forces. However, each member of our class will always be proud that he has been a part of and is now a graduate of Central High School. Our Clubs provide outlets for all our varied interests, some being chiefly for service to the school, aud others more for enjoyment and experience. The spot for those interested in acting or any of its phases, is the dramatics club. Those participating in plays, both acting or on committees, may become members of the Thespians if they have ten points from the activities they have been in. Also tied in with dramatics is the costume club which works hard to prepare and provide costumes for plays, operettas, and the variety show. Hard at work in the office and the library are the monitors who help whenever and wherever needed. The ushers and usherettes also do service for the school by assisting at athletic events, plays, concerts, and other school functions. The executive bodies of the two largest clubs in school are the G. C. Cabinet and the Field and Stream officers. The G. C. Cabinet is made up of the officers and commitee chairmen of the Girls' Club. The Field and Stream Club meets for the purpose of learning more about conservation and the out-of-doors. Those in the Spanish and French Clubs learn to have fun while they gain useful practice of the language they are studying. Junior Red Cross has the big annual job of taking care of and promoting Red Cross boxes for overseas. Members of the photography club learn more about their specialized hobby, while the electricians provide us with movies, lights in the aud, microphones, and extension cords. Last is the Boys' and Girls' M Club, composed of those students who have won their letter in athletics. Through these organizations we arc broadening our knowledge and gaining useful experience. Mary Vallem, Concert Mistress Orchestra The Central High Orchestra conducted by Mr. Walter Fandrich is composed of thirty-three strings and nineteen brasses and woodwinds. The orchestra began its work early in the fall as they prepared for their Pop Concert on November 18. Having the honor of being selected to participate in the Mid-Winter Music Clinic held at the University of Wisconsin, the orchestra worked many extra hours during Christmas vacation and before school in the morning to prepare for this event. Next on their agenda was the Winter Concert, followed by a trip to Wauwatosa early in March. Their journey over, the orchestra settled down to prepare for the Spring Concert. More new music, and in May came the All-City Music Festival. Members of the orchestra wound up their season by playing for graduation exercises on June 15. Choir All-State Choir Representatives The A Cappella Choir, directed by Miss Oarleen McCormick, began its work early in the fall with almost a complete turnover in membership. The choir opened its season by presenting the Christmas Pageant for the student body before vacation began in December. During the Christmas season the choir participated in the Christmas Pageant at the Capitol along with the choirs from East and West. For the Mid-Winter Clinic four representatives were sent to sing in the All-State choir. At the end of January the choir participated in the Winter Concert. They then began to plan for a trip to Janesville in April, and the Spring Concert. The choir and the chorus classes took part in the All-City Music Festival at the Stock Pavilion. They also sang tor the presentation of the honor pins. Their last appearance was to sing the farewell song at graduation. Dick Adams, Susan Parisi, Marjunice West, and Carl Wirth. Band The Central High Band is conducted by Mr. Walter Fandrich. Consisting of seventy-seven brasses, woodwinds, and percussion instruments, the band contributes much to the activities of our school. In the fall the band played and marched at Central's home football games, and contributed to the before-the-game spirit during pep auds. They were the only city high school band to march in the Armistice Day parade. Basketball season found the band divided into two smaller bands which took turns playing for each game. The band participated in four major concerts: the Winter Concert in February, the Pop Concert in March, and Spring Concert in April, and the All-City Music Festival in May. The band finished up its season of marching in the heat of the Memorial Day Parade in May. Bill Reynolds, Band President Quartet The Boys’ Quartet, directed by Miss Darleen McCormick, is composed of first tenor, Carl Wirth; second tenor, Jack Mitchell; baritone, Stan Schmelzer; and bass, Dick Adams. The editors make the layout sheets and post their Front Page- - - - - Louise Rintelmann assignments. Then the reporters write their stories and hand them Nancee Meyers in, so that the editors can copyread the stories and make the nec- essary corrections. Next the stories are typed and sent to the print Feature Page - - - Sue Stein shop. At the print shop they are set on linotype machines. The Colenthia Hill printers run galley proofs of each story, and then the editors proof- read the stories to see if they are correct. It requires long-term planning, a large staff organization, and photography which strives to produce better pictures An advertising campaign is also conducted by the students to obtain partial financial help for the annual. The editors constantly do and redo the pages to get a better layout, and they never see the finished product before the annual arrives. The annual is done by off-set, a process where the pictures are drawn, and the copy typed on large envelopes. The first sheet becomes the master copy for reproduction, and every detail must be correct. The second sheet is kept for a dummy copy, and the face of die envelope is the third sheet. The annual is then shipped to the offset company in three shipments of forty-eight pages each in December, February, and March. An additional eight pages are allowed for spring sports. The finished product arrives at Central in laic May or early June. Louise Rintelmann- - - Editor Mr. R. A1 Smith was the outstanding junior on the squad. Juniors Russ Allen, Dick Pedracine, and Ed Wing also saw considerable action. Murray Ison, the only sophomore on the squad, also gained experience. COACH ALWIN and COACH ROONEY This year's track team has a core of five returning lettermcn. Bill Connors, Al Smith, and Harry Collier, returning dash men; Stan Schmelzer, for the half-mile; and Bernie Kane in the shot put and discus. The West Relays was Central's first meet, followed by the Milwaukee Journal Relays, in which our relay team captured second place. The team is strong in the dashes, distance runs, and weights, but they lack depth in the high jump, pole vault, and the hurdles. This year's schedule includes eight meets, with the Rockford Relays being the only trip, and the highlight of the season. Mr. Harold Rooney is the head track coach and is assisted by Mr. Robert Alwin. Best prospects in the singles are Dick Collier and John Evanchenko, and in the doubles. Mike Rody and Terry Schmaus, and Jim Mack and Elton Garner. Coach for the tennis team is Mr. Matoba. Coach Donald Wendt has a prospect of two seniors, one junior, and six sophomores, for the coming season. With Ariyn White, the only returning letterman, the squad has a considerable amount of work ahead of them. The team will travel to Janesville and Beliot, and will take part in the Janesville Invitational and the Big 8 Tournament. First row: Terry McCann, John Rohde. Ed Garvoille. The ninth grade class is about to bid goodbye to junior high and look ahead to the responsibilities and activities in senior high. Coming to Central Junior in 7th grade we had the new experience of having our classes in different rooms with different teachers. We had the opportunity to participate in specialized fields such as music, athletics, dramatics, art, shop, and home economics courses. We were also allowed to take part in our own recreation center. In eighth grade we became accustomed to our new and busy daily routine. No more fumbling with locker combinations, and asking what to fill out on what forms. Now we could participate in the many clubs provided for us. Since our dancing had improved, we enjoyed our noon hour recreation, parties, and the recreation center even more. Some of us had the honor of being elected to the National Junior Honor Society. Ninth grade, and finally we were the seniors of junior high. We took an active part in the mirror, student council, plays and operetta, band, orchestra, chorus, and sports. In preparation for next year we began to receive homework every night in every subject, and also had the puzzling problem of making our out four year programs. Our experiences in junior high will be our background to aid us next year as we enter senior high as sophomores. Mome Koom 102 Fourth row; A. Bennett, J. Daly, L. Brackett, D. Conners, M. Arnold, O.
