tom® We dedicate our new 1955 TYCUOBERAHN to the spirit of newness, growth, and progress which has been so much in evidence in Central's halls and classrooms this past year. of ( entente ADMINISTRATION FACULTY SENIORS JUNIORS SOPHOMORES ORGANIZATIONS ACTIVITIES A THLETICS JUNIOR HIGH 4 ADVERTISERS We wish to commend Superintendent of Schools Philip H. Falk and the Madison Board of Education for their awareness of Central High School's growing needs during the past few years. In these days of great city growth and expansion, it is encouraging to note that our superintendent and the Board oi Education are keeping our schools in step with this growth and are at the same time using keen foresight in planning for Madison's future educational needs. Future plans necessarily include new schools, new classrooms, and new equipment. Future plans must also include the maintenance and renovation of the older schools, of which Central High School is proud to claim its place as the original Madison High School. Therefore, we wish to express our gratitude to Superintendent of Schools Philip H. Falk and the Madison Board of Education for such recent improvements in our school as the new front entranceway, the tiling in our corridors, new lighting in many of our rooms, new lockers, new stage lighting, the expansion of the Central auditorium stage, and the many more building improvements that have made our school a more pleasant and convenient place in which to work, study, and play. Members of the Madison Board of Education are: Mr. Glenn W. Stephens, President; Dr. R. W. Huegel, Vice President; Mr. Ray F. Sennctt, Treasurer; Professor Erwin A. Gaumnitz; Mrs. E. J. Samp; Mr. Herbert J. Schmiege; and Mr. A. H. Younger. 6 For nearly half a century Central High School has housed and educated thousands of Madison pupils. With the same sturdy walls and with some of the atmosphere of the Halls of Ivy, but with a good deal of renovating, modern equipment, lighting, and an attractive brightening up of the entire building, we are making ready for the next half of the century. 7 MR. WILLIAM MARSH Assistant Principal Senior High School MISS VIDA V. SMITH Principal Junior High School Left to right: Mrs. Cora Podell, Mrs. Rosemary Klein, Mrs. Marilyn Wisor, and Mrs. Vivian Devine 8 THE EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY of CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL, Madison, Wisconsin The first responsibility of our school is to prepare our pupils for effective citizenship in a democratic America, and help them realize the vital importance of that preparation. This involves the knowledge of cultural heritage and of contemporary living, attitudes and skills to a greater degree than was apparent in any previous period. It involves faith in the obligation of social responsibilities, not merely a belief in social equality. The second responsibility of our school Is to give opportunities, environment and help toward the maximum development of each child's potentialities, with the goal of a well-balanced happy personal life and a productive, effective membership in the varied life and work of the community. This involves guidance toward personal, educational, social (human relationships), recreations, and vocational adjustments and growth. 10 LLOYD BESANT English - Speech MARGUERITE HASSE Librarian MRS. The new class in Central High School this year was the Class of '57, the Sophomores, part of which is shown above during an aud program. Strange as it seems, the higher you are in school, the lower you are, at least according to auditorium seating arrangements. May it also follow in reverse then, that the older this class becomes, the newer the school becomes, in size, building improvements, and spirit. 48 7957 SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS: Albert Smith, President. Standing: Arthur Jordee, Vice President; Sharon Lee, Secretary. In keeping with the theme of Y l this we salute the Sopho- A. 7 7 mores as our new class. The crystal ball predicts the Sophomore Class to be a hardworking and spirited group. This class will bring about many changes in the school, and it will keep the Central spirit alive. Sophomores, if you make your next two years in senior high the best, these predictions will come true. 49 Home Room 303 MR. ROONEY Sixth row: G. Esser, T. Cuccia, O. Oie. Fifth row: D. Chisman, R. This year the school has established six new clubs; another new club, the Thespian Club was granted its national charter only last spring. We feature the six new clubs at the beginning of this section of the Tychoberahn as a salute to their establishment now, and to their continued success in the days to come. The new French and Spanish Clubs are under the guidance of Miss Lucile Reid. These two clubs supplement the classroom studies of the languages. The two sports clubs are directed by Mr. Bob Harris. The clubs feature spectator education, explaining the technical intricacies of football and basketball; during the second semester the members participate in golf. Miss Jane Roberts sponsors the Costume Club; the members study costume design and work hand in hand with the dramatics department in play production. The Photography Club is expertly directed by Mr. Floyd Briese of the Madison Vocational School staff. We thank Mr. Briese and this group for much of the photographic work that appears in this book. 54 Fifth row: T. Bliss. W. Connor, D. Smith, G. Haywood. D. Schmelzkopf, S. Schleck, M. Gotsline. The Orchestra also played at die performance of You Can't Take It With You, and it shared honors with the operetta cast in von Flotow's Martha, in which it accompanied singers and story for two performances. The orchestra is grateful for three new additions to the auditorium itself which make for more pleasant public performances. These are: aisle carpeting, improved stage lighting and the extension of the stage. They are also grateful for a new addition to the Central faculty, Mr. John Whitney, popular and capable assistant to Mr. Fandrich in instrumental music. Concert mistress, Barbara Burke and Mr. Walter Fandrich. tcen£ “Sand This was the first full year of use for the band's new uniforms. Decked out in their colorful new uniforms, white bucks, and white gloves, the band played and marched at Central's home football games; this group also marched in the annual Memorial Day Parade. The entire production was under the direction of Miss Darleen McCormick, with Mr. Walter Fandrich directing the Orchestra. Martha is the story of a court lady, her maid and their falling in love with two farmers to whom they sell their services in a moment of jest. As in most romantic idylls, there is a separation and reunion of the lovers. This tale is embroidered with the festivities of the fair and market place which serve as background for the romance. Among the many songs of the production, were The Last Rose of Summer, The Spinning Song, Hither Come, Linger Not, O When She Rose Fair on My Sight. and See What Grace They Show. 1 Across the Central athletic horizon comes a new fall sport, cross-country. Central defeated Wisconsin High twice and Stoughton twice; the team lost to East, Janesville, Beloit, and to West two times. Bernard Kane and Larry McDowell had the best individual records with 8 wins and 3 losses each. In addition, Kane was entered in the State Meet in which he lost to the runner-up by a score of 2-1. Many of the local businessmen and merchants of Madison's downtown area are alumni of Central High School. Their response to this Annual publication has always revealed a congenial attitude of active interest and encouragement. We also wish to thank the following individuals for assistance during the past year: Mr. Floyd Briese and Mr. Harold King of the Madison Vocational School for photographic help; Mr. George Stein and Mr. Angus McVicar of Photocopy Service for photo processing aid; Mr. Tom Barlet and Mr. Carter Lueders of the Capital Times for the night football photos; Black Photo Service for the band and orchestra pictures; and the Harry S. Manchester Portrait Studio for the Senior pictures. Four people in particular gave us almost daily assistance during the various phases of production. They are Miss Vida V. Smith, Principal of Central Junior High School; Mr. William Marsh, Assistant Senior High Principal; Miss Nanette Ritter of Manchester’s Portrait Studio; and Mr. Ray Wildeman of the Taylor Yearbook Co.
