A truly memorable date in the life of every senior. Graduation day, the day when our lives at Central cease and our fond memories begin. It seems only a few months ago that we entered Central as sophomores. Many important things happened that year which remain vivid in our thoughts. Our big athletic triumph came when the sophomore basketball team won the Big Eight Champion- ship. We connect names like Ray Arndt, Larry Pedracine ,and Art Epstein with our victories. We made wise choices in class officer elections. VVe chose Harold Haak, ipresidentg Sally Buck, vice-presidentg and Fran Fiore, secretary-treasurer, Soon we competed in a new and exciting show, the scrap drive. We came through with flying colors, beating both the junior and senior classes. Musical ability showed up in the operetta, The Waltz Dream where such familiar Centralites as john Fisher and Nancy Bostad had leads. No one can forget Char Taylor's performance as Emily in Our Hearts Were Young and Gay. Finally June came, and we progressed a step farther to the rank of juniors. In early fall came the thrill of our first homecoming. All of us were very proud when Donna Feggestad and Millie Fish were elected to the court of honor. No one will ever forget the Homecom- ing Dance Hi-Y put on after the game. Then came the election of class officers. This year we chose Ben Valenza, presidentg Mickey McCann, vice-pres.g Nancy Bostad. secretaryg and Nancy Miller, treasurer. Soon prom committees began to click, and April and prom, Evening In Paradise arrived. Ben Valenza, and Bea Newton reigned as king and queen. In the field of dramatics names such as Pat Loos, jim Bly. Donna Feggestad, Mae Wein, and Kent Siegel were prominent in the two plays. Mother XV as A Freshman and The Case of the Sulky Girl. Our last project of the year was ordering class rings. VVith them came the realization that our senior year would soon be a reality. Our first job at the opening of our last year was to elect Chuck Amera, presidentg Ron Cook, vice- presidentg and Pat Mullarkey. secretary-treasurer. To spur our great football team on to victory, a homecoming celebration was held in the fall with Miles Kiefer and Millie Fish reigning as King and Queen. Everyone was greatly thrilled when we won that game, which placed us third in the Big Eight. Basketball season went as well, as we left it with a second place rating to our credit, Many seniors displayed their dramatic talents in the fall play Jennie Kissed Me. Familiar faces again appeared in March for the operetta The Mikado. Among the leads were john Fisher and Bea Newton, 4 Suddenly May 23 was here. lt left us with thrilling memories of Senior Dance. All of us had a wonderful time dancing to l'll' Be Seeing You while Chuck Amera and Ida Blankenheim reigned as king and queen. All too soon june arrived. With the flourish of final exams. particularly final for us. was the ex- citement of graduation week. . Wednesday night found us at the Senior Banquet, and later at school for our superb class night program. We spent Thursday at Hoyt Park for our Senior Picnic. Then came Friday morning. Each of us. in blue caps and gowns crossed the stage for the last time as Central students, Now the last strains of Pomp and Circumstancen have faded, but in our hearts linger memories that will never fade, memories of our years at Central High School. The Downtowners scored i touchdown in each of the second and third quarters. These :ame on runs of 10 and 66 yards by Pedracine. Central then 'omped home with 13 pts. in the fourth quarter on runs of 32 yards by Gothard, and 71 yards by Cloutier. The game marked the first appearance of a single-wing team for Central in almost 1 decade. September 26, 1952 BELOIT 21 CENTRAL 0 Central lost its Big Eight opener in a hard fought game. Our team played the game to the hilt and held the vaunted Beloit attack scoreless in the first half. The superiovr Beloit depth and speed, however, told its tale, We were unfortunate in losing Jim Harrington, a fiery competitor, for the sason. Among thc bright spots in the game, was the terriffic defensive performance of Pete Guzzctta. October 3, 1952 CENTRAL 27 JANESVILLE 0 The fighting Downtowncrs got back into their winning ways by trouncing the Blucbirds 27-0 at Janesville, We scored twice in the first quarter on 10 yard runs by Pedracine and Cloutier. Ernie Sehuepbaeh scored next after falling on a punt blocked by Ron Cook, Mickey McCann scored our final touchdown on a one yard keeper play. Compliments were in order, to, Miles Kiefer, Tommy Gerothanos, and Maury Ellis, who recovered four Janesville fumbles, for their fine defensive play. October 10, 1952 CENTRAL 14 HORLICK 12 Due to the accuracy of Larry Pedraeine's toe, we beat llorlick hy the narrowest of margins, 14-13. Guzzetta's re- covery of the fumble on the llorliek 23 set up the first touch- down. Pedracine, a few plays later, scored on a 5 yard end sweep. Kiel'er's recovered fumble on the Horlick 16 set up our last touchdown. On the first play, Pedracine passed to Kent Siegel to the one yard line. McCann then scored on a keeper , October 17, 1952 CENTRAL 35 PARK 7 Our Homecoming game couldn't have been finer. The boys piled up the largest score by a Central team in the last decade. Although the game was definitely a team victory, there were manly heroes. Mickey McCann had the dubious honor of carry- ing the ball three times for three yiards and three touchdowns. The defensive end play of Maury Ellis and Ernie Schuepbach was outstanding. The running of Cloutier and Pedracine, the blocking of Kiefer, the tackling October 24, 1952 KENOSI-IA 26 Sheer exhaustion book its toll as our Downtowners went to defeat before a team with superior speed and weight advantage. Again our boys played a terrific first half, holding the score down to 7-0. Mickey McCann, John Cloutler, and Dick Connery all ran hard. Ron Cook, Jerry Hickey, Sam Stassi, and Bob Carson all played a ,fine game in the line. of Cook, all were superb. CENTRAL 0 0ct0ber 30, 1952 CENTRAL 12 WEST 6 Two touchdowns by Dick Connery highlighted our 12-6 win over the West Regents. T'he first touchdown came on a 40 yard pass from Larry Pedracine. The second came on a 52 yard pass from John Cloutier. Gothard played his best game of the season as he ripped West's line for 101 yards. Miles Kiefer, Ron Co0k, Tom Gerothanos, Jerry Hickey, Pete Guzzetta, and Maury Ellis gave yeoiman performances in our defensive line November 5, 1952 CENTRAL 13 EAST 0 By virture of beating East, our Downtowners cropped our first city championship since 1941. Park gave us our only seare, battling us o11 even terins for three quarters. We finally turned on the heat, however, and won by nine points. Kenosha gave us our lirst real seare of the season, but we managed to take a G6-60 decision. It was an up- hill tight until the beginning o fthe fourth quarter when two tree throws by Art Epstein put us ahead 47-46 for the lirst time since early in the game. We widened our lead to 59-54 and the game was ours. XVe didn't have niueh trouble with Janesville, but then eanie our old rival, XVest. The Regents started off with a. bang and it took us until the start of the third period to cateh up. Rollo Vallem's jump shot put us ahead 35-34. Wie were never headed. Do you remember that shot of Larry Pedraeine's from past the eenter line as the lst half ended? , The boys really warmed up for the Beloit eontest by walloping liafrosse Central 88-64. Something finally eaught up witll us, the ilu. That, eoupled with the speed ot' the Line Vity Five, gave Beloit a T7-55 Vietory over us. When the time eanie for the boys to redeem themselvs, they really did a job of it. They tangled with Horliek in one of the 'fbarnburners our gym is noted for. Hay, Larry, Art, Mickey, John, and the boys played their best ganie of the season in defeating one ot' the top teams in the state T-l-Tl. livery teani-member gave his all, and the results were well received, by everyone at Uenral. The XVatertown game and our return inateh with Park were more or less tune-ups for our return game with llorliek. An extraordinary night tor llorliek provided many fireworks, but not to our advantage, as we were beaten 8-l-58, NVQ' weren't out of the woods yet, After winning a ragged game from East, we journeyed to Kenosha. It seenis that Kenosha also had some trieks up its sleeve as they took a 56-53 deeision from us. Hy this time our hopes for a Big Eight ehampionship were dim, but the team bouneed baek, as all great teams do, to take a 75-66 win out of the grasp of Janes ville. West then nipped us 54-53 in one of the really fine gaines ot' the Big Eight season. The Regents had just enough to stave off our rally as the gun went off. Re- venge sonietinies ean be niighty sweet. I was this time. YVe beat Beloit in the final Big Flight game 80-75, Our boys then turned to the tournarnent grind. A. l im'1-, if lllmlll, HOCKEY With eight lettermen returning from last year's team, we hoped to have a strong team. Our hopesicame true as our puckster's again skated to the imaginary state crown, ' The opening game of the season saw our Central sextet nip West by the score of 2-1. Scores by Don Rasmus- sen in the first period, and by Ed Baumann, in the second period, proved the margin of victory. The team beat West again, this time by virtue of a 7-3 trouncing. Until Bob Lake and. Dick Josephson found the range late in the first period, the game looked like a toss-up. Stevens Point was next on our line of victims as we shut them out by a 2-0 score. The shutout was credited to Jim Bly, who got his first shutout in two years. Goals by Jerry Suter and Don Wahlin provided the margin of' victory in the best game of' the season. West had the misfortune to run up against us again, and we proceeded to beat them to the tune of 7-1. Center Jerry Suter scored twice and the rest of the scoring was divided up among five Downtowners. Our season ended with a 5-2 victory over Stevens Point. Congratulations to the entire hockey squad for their fine season. Special congratulations should go out to the seniors on the team. Let's hope the team will be as fine next year. Special recognition should go to Mr. Bob Rieser and Mr. Pat Wills for their fine handling of the team. SOPHOMORE BASKETBALL The sophomores, coached by Mr. Harold Pollock, didn't have a very successful season. The main cause of this was the fact that, at one time or another, six sophomores were on the varsity squad. NVith the additions of George Colletti, Don Beale, Joe Brown, Jack Hoven, Ted Williams, and Tim Chasey, the team would have proven to be a formidable opponent for any team in the league. The floor play and leadership of Bob Gruber, the scoring of Harry Le May and Jack Hoven, and the fine all- around play of Terry Plroen and Ted Williams can be cited. Other players who bore some of the work, and showed up commendfably, were Phil Behrend, Ron Stormer, Bill Gunderson, Richie Harris, and Jim Johnson. WRESTLING The 1052-10525 wrestling squad was hampered by a shortage of wrestlers in certain weights. The 103 and 136 lb. division suffered the most. Jerry Hickey, Sam Stassl, Bob Finn, Don Gandolph, and Sam Cefalu were the most consistent winners. Ben Rowley, Tom Meyers, Jerry Alling, and Clifford Olson also gave good showings. The two meets with Beloit highlighted the season. In both mets Sam Cefalu and Don Gandolph won their matches, the second time on pins. The fine Beloit squad, however, won both times by convincing scores. Perhaps the best team effort was against Wisconsin High. Sam Stassi pinned. his opponent. Ben Rowley, Tom Meyers, and Jerry Alling also won their matches. Participation in a sectional meet of the State Wrestling Tournament ended the squad's season. Don Gan- dolph placed second in the 155 lb. division. Ben Rowley was third in the 112 lb. division, Clifford Olson placed third in the 120 lb. division. A great deal of credit should go to Mr. Lindl, who dirl such ai line job as coach, and the boys on the squad who stuck it out and gave their all.
