Ike iqifq 'Juckoke’iakn published by THE SENIOR CLASS of CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL And dedicated to the classes we leave behind in the hope that their high school years will bring as many fond memories as ours have. [2] [3] to see oursels as itlicrs see us! Contents . . Faculty Seniors Undergraduates Sports Activities Junior High [4] To each of you boys and girls who are and increasingly will be the heart and spirit of Madison Central High School, 1 wish a happy continued growth and success. As a first step toward this growth, look into a mirror at your inner self—“see yourself as ‘ithers’ see you . Check up on your good and your “not so good qualities. Then, look into a telescope at your future self, as “ithers could and would like to see you— proud of your school and so living that your school is proud of you. Yours then is sure to be the improved pluck, ability, interestedness, and likeableness which you and I admire in every real boy and girl. Yours, too, the good taste, good breeding, and very good judgment of every real person. The last step will be your graduation, joyful yet sad, with fine memories in your heart of these high school years as the best years of your lift?. L. A. Wakhler Principal [5] MRS. The coaches of the 1948 squad were head coach Harold “Cus” Pollock. assistant coaches Mr. “Hobby” Alwin and Mr. Harold Hip” Hooney. Central opened the season with a non-conference game against a strong La Crosse Logan squad. Walt Bigley was injured and lost to the team for tin- rest of the year. Hie score? 22-0. Logan. In the first conference game of the year against Kenosha, at Kenosha, the Downtowners brought home a 7-0 victory. Jim Conner scored Central's first touchdown of the year on a quarterback sneak. Next game on the schedule was with Madison West. West proved too big and too deep in reserves for Cen- tral's battling eleven. Central came out on the short end of a 33-7 score. The Orange and Black went into the Beloit game the definite underdog. Central, with the Never Say Die” feeling, battled the Beloit club to a 0-0 tie. Central was the only team in the Big Right to hold Beloit scoreless and mar their otherwise perfect record with a tie. Heads Up defensive play by the entire squad stopped Beloit's quick opening offensive attack. Conway Curtin, a hard running back, was lost for the season because of a leg injury received in this game. Next on the list was Janesville. Central absorbed a 14-0 defeat at tin hands of the Bluebirds at Janesville. Central next took on Haeine Park. Central was plagued with more injuries, inflicted in the Janesville game, and Park went back to Haeine with a 27-13 victory. Coat'll “Cus” Pollock then took his “Downtowner” eleven to Haeine to play Haeine llorlick. Ilorliek had to fight all the way to chalk up a 20-13 victory over the Orange and Black. The team turned in tin- best performance of the year when they defeated a favored Last team. All of the experts” had Rast over Central by 12 points. Coach Pollock has often said, I like to lx rated the underdog. An inspired Central team passed and ran beautifully on a wet, soggy field. Jim Conner tossed several miraculous aerials to end Clem DiLorcto. Walt Bigley returned to the line-up, but Marvin Turk” Kruth, left end, was quarantined. The team threw everything they had at East and came out on top 26-12. [ 44 ] How 1: E. Jones—manager, F. King, K. Mend, J. Paltz, H. Pongratz, A. I.indaucr, R. McCann, D. Finn, M. Fruth, A. Stevens Point, also a non-conference team, was added to the Downtowners’ Victory list as an easy 35-20 win was chalked up. The Central boys started Big Eight play on the road against Racine Park. Park won in a close 35-31 game. West, having a hot and cold team, caught our boys on one of their hot nights and defeated the Orange and Black 46-28. In a practice game, the varsity showed the alumni how to play basketball by defeating them 45-37. After two conference defeats the Orange and Black broke loose and defeated Beloit 30-20. A breather from conference play, but a close game with Ripon; Central 32, Ripon 30. The bucketecrs next tripped down to Janesville, only to lose to the Bluebirds 56-54. ' Bobbie’s Boys” then squeezed out a 39-37 win over Racine florlick, until then undefeated. Next on schedule was Kenosha. Kenosha proved no match and Central won with an impressive 55-27 score. The Purple-and-Cold boys from East High invaded the crackerbox only to absorb a sound 52-42 trimming. Racine Park came bouncing up to Madison only to crawl home after receiving a defeat at the hands of a revenging Central squad, 43-40. Kenosha, improved a bit from their first game, still missed the boat as Central won again, 49-44. Coach Willis Jones’s West High aggregation played host to the Orange and Black quintet and downed the Downtowners, 58-50. Beloit again, and Alwin's Angels” came through with a 54-30 win. Our Purple and Gold friends from the east side invited the Central five to their floor for a City Series game. East won. 34-32. Central next put out Janesville’s fire and trounced them, 54-40. Coach Bob Alwin then took his boys off to Racine to battle with llorlick for Central’s last conference game; the Big Eight champs won, 58-45. [46] Tournament Time Central went into the tournaments with a well-balanced tournament squad. The Orange and Black handily defeated Watertown, 46-29. East defeated Columbus, so Central and East met the next night. When the smoke cleared after a hard fought, close game, Central had won, 44-42 in an overtime thriller that made Central champs of the Columbus regional tournament. Then off to Reedsburg for the sectionals, where our quintet met the Heedsburg team and came out on the short end of a 50-42 score. Ray Disch was high scorer with 136 points. Coach Harold “Gus” Pollock again coached the “Stumblebums”. It looks as though Central will have a strong basketball squad for several years, since the sophomores almost won the sophomore title. The sophomore squad gives boys the opportunity to play basketball and gives them a chance to gain the necessary experience to play Big Eight basketball. Coach “Gus” Pollock did a fine job coaching the sophomores to ready them for the Varsity Squad. [48] Volleyball “Set it up . . . and Spike!” were the familiar words of Coach “Gus” Pollock as he drilled his volleyball squad to perfection. This hard work paid off when our boys overcame tremendous odds to win the sectional meet, and the right to enter the State Tournament. The squad, made up of the following members: Bob Patzer, Charles Thompson, Hugh Stamps, James MacDonald, Jim Conner, Ray Disch, Bill Mischke, John Minter, Van Burris, Marv Lietzke, Bob Haukcdahl, and Sid Waldorf deserve credit for a good job well done. Baseball Central’s baseball squad is coached by able coach Harold “Gus” Pollock. The squad started its season on the diamond with a non-conference game with Fort Atkinson. The “nine” looked forward to the city series with hopes of winning the “Big Three” title. Lettermen forming a center for the squad were A1 Caruso, Jack Germann, Bob King, A1 Lin-dauer, Wally Lindauer, Bill Mischke, Norm Moen, John Paltz, Bill Pedder, and Jim Smithback. Other candidates were John Cordio, John Currie, Ray Disch, Don Johnson, Esomor Krash, Bob Launder, John Michaelis, Tony Motisi, Charles Neuhauser, Frank Ninedorf, Bill Schaefer, Don Sprague, Don Waldorf, and Harry Williams. Track A total of fifty-eight track hopefuls and four lettermen greeted coach Harold “Rip” Rooney as a nucleus for the 19 49 cinder squad. Boys reporting were Merland Anderson, Walt Bigley, Gordon Bentley, Duane Ballentine, Robert Boaman, Spenser Burdick, Charles Butler, Duane Cook, James Conner, Conway Curtin, Melvin Daggett, Ray Disch, Charles Elvord, Robert Faust, Jerry Foster, Ed Forbes, Gary Goth, Anthony Genna, Sam Galina, Robert Haukedahl, Richard King, Robert King, Alfred Lindauer, Rogelio Llerandi, Leonard Lahtinen, Don Lundc, Marvin Leitzke, Richard Mayne, Richard McCann, Paul McKenzie, Kenneth Mead, Anthony Motisi, Thomas McManus, Harold Opheim, Louis Olson, Darrell Pope, John Paltz, Keith Rabinowitz, Robert Smith, Anthony Stassi, Hughlon Stamps, Allan Sherman, Donald Sprague, Donald Walker, James Whiting, Harry Williams, George Wrend, Clayton Parman, Frank Ninedorf, James Zack, William Pedder, William Mischke, Victor Tortorici, Richard Peterson, James McDonald, Reginald Bleck, Robert Lee, Thomas Lynch, Arnold Odden, Ed Hill. As we go to press, the outlook for the year is bright, as an impressive twelve points were scored in the West Relays. [49] Tennis Central’s Tennis Squad is coached by Mr. Homer Winger. The squad’s first match was with Fort Atkinson, at Fort Atkinson, on April 14. Team members who made the Fort Atkinson trip were: Don Gallagher, Bruce Maxwell, Arnold Odden, Bob Patzer, Rod Sperle, and Sid Waldorf. Team members include: A. Odden, S. Hershleder, B. Maxwell, J. Patzer, D. Barrett, S. Waldorf, B. Patzer, R. Schiffer, D. Gallagher, J. Graham, D. Waldorf, R. Sperle. Golf The Central High school golf team had three returning lettermen this year—Nick Galanos, Al Lindauer, Charles Neuhauser. Others who have been playing are Tommy Coynes, John Bieberstein, Dick Brilliot. These six will probably comprise the major part of the team. Mr. Robert Alwin acts as team coach. [50] How 1: S. E. Gross. In terrific heat, we saw our football team drop its opener to LaCrosse Logan, 22 to 0. A week later, the team traveled to Kenosha and won their first conference game, 7 to 0. OCTOBER We chose cheerleaders at the first pep meeting, but West defeated our boys that night, 33 to 7. At the Dad’s Day game the team tied Beloit, but Curtin was hurt and put out for the season. Everyone enjoyed “Fall Festival”, our first dance. At our first Senior Class meeting, we nominated four candidates for class president. NOVEMBER The team really battled in their last game of the year as they trounced favored East, 26 to 12. The Student Council sponsored a scrap drive. We seniors won, and collected one-fifth of the profits. Basketball season started with a bang as we won both games of the Stevens Point-Wausau doubleheader. DECEMBER The Varsity beat the alumni, in the M-club game. “Ever Since Eve ', our fall play, was enjoyed by all. The team defeated Beloit, and also squeezed out a win over Ripon in the last few seconds. Christmas vacation was welcomed in by home room parties ... SAD SENIORS STUFF SELVES. JANUARY School reopened and senior pictures were taken. The Hi-Y’s “Horsefoot Follies” sparked the team and Jack scored 28 as Central whipped East, 52 to 42. A beautiful week-end as the team won two games; one from Park, and the other from Kenosha. West topped our boys, dam! [70] Ooel how FEBRUARY The team’s victory over Beloit completed a week of terrible exams. The boys lost a heartbreaker to East High, 34 to 32; and were downed by-Janesville 56 to 54. MARCH Reedsburg was a little too big. and the boys lost out 50 to 42. “Rip Rooney and Mr. Pollock greet a hopeful squad of tracksters and an inspired baseball team. Then music instead of sports caught our eye as “The Marriage of Nannette” was presented. APRIL The band presented a swell “Pop Concert. Quite a few honors were won at the West relays. Spring Vacation was welcomed by everyone. MAY The annual Cotton Ball was very successful. The baseball team became noted by-all. as they played well in the state tournaments. The Senior band members starred in their final high school appearance, the Spring Concert. JUNE Our senior dance was really beautiful. Everyone wanted to stay till morning. And the banquet, class night, and the picnic. Remember the fun we had? Then we graduated. We’ll never forget the swell times we had in school, especially during the fun-packed, enjoyable Senior Y'ear. [71] Our Hearts Were Young and Gay June graduation writes the final chapter in the history of the class of 1949. With the last strains of Pomp and Circumstance, the deeds of the class become past history and the basis for many pleasant memories. It seems that only yesterday I was a sophomore. I remember that while living in my own little world, I wondered if I would ever become a senior. I started that year of 1946 with lots of spunk, as did Marv Doubleday, Jean Auby, Emma Jane Skenandore, and the Schneider twins, Dave and Don. I remember how proud I was to be a member of the class I was sure was destined to be the greatest in Central’s history. We made a wise choice of class officers, and I was happy that all three of the candidates I voted for won: Jim McDonald, president; Walt Bigley, vice president; and Bemiece Elliott, secretary. One event of my sophomore year that I will never forget was the swell homecoming celebration. Not to be outdone by the juniors and seniors, we sophs pitched right in and helped with the planning and carrying out of the celebration. Nick Galanos, Tommy Coynes, Joan Tallard, and Donna Mergen were just a few of the members of our class who took part. Gosh, it seems like only yesterday that I was sitting in the stands at Breese Stevens Field watching the Central-Park game. The team won, 20 to 7, so everyone was really happy at the swell homecoming dance which honored alumni. Mother Nature had a hand in writing my memory book that year, too. I thought the big blizzard was really swell. After all, remember the two-day vacation that came with it? I stayed in bed for 48 hours straight as did John Gibson, Sid Waldorf, Dick LaCourse, George Wrend, and Bill Bavery. Our sophomore basketball squad did all right for themselves, too. I was really proud that Frank Ninedorf, Leonard Nelson, Roger Levis, Don Gallagher, and Clem DiLoreto were all from our class. Some of the girls who stood up well against the juniors and seniors in girls’ sports were Rose Cascio, Virginia McKenna, Betty Ehl, Leona Johnson, and Pat Weger. Another event I shall never forget is the presentation of the operetta “Sweethearts”. Betty Figler had the lead, and some of the chonis members were Donna Schultz, Grace Olson, Betty Hawley, and Louise Genge. Larry Kelliher gave his usual wonderful support at the piano. In the dramatics field, the play “The Great Big Doorstep” was presented, with many members of our class taking part. Nelda Dossey, Donna Lawton, Gene Britton, Gwen Elmore, Mike Mc-Kune, and Wally Lindauer, the villain, were only a few of the characters. Yes, my sophomore year was really fun. But high school life moves at a fast pace, and before I knew it, I was a junior. It was a wonderful feeling. I discovered that my life had become a very complex mixture of studies, sports, cultural and social activities. But I didn't mind it because I had so many swell kids around to talk to and study with. Remember those nice smiles of Helen Howe and Lucy Schiro? Don Carey was my nomination for the most cheerful fellow in the class. [72] Class officers were chosen early in the year and our class activities began to function immediately. We chose Wally Northrup president, George Guzzetta vice president, and Marie Hodgson secretary. Some of the boys in our class began to join the book-exchange loafers’ gang, and after watching them, I decided that they would be able successors to the grads. Don Lunde, Jack Germann, John O’Malley, Lavern Gator, Pete Carson, and Beaver Pannan were some of the boys who used to spend their spare time holding up the third floor lockers. I noticed that the girls didn’t clan in the halls, but immediately after school you could always find Joyce Schimming, Marlene Skeede, Dona Strmiska, Delores Mathison, and Judy Gust in the back booths at Rennebohm’s State Street drug store. When basketball season started, we juniors were well represented on the varsity squad by George Michalson, Jack O’Brien, Al Lindauer, and the Patzer brothers. Bob and Jack. The team didn't do too well, but we all figured, Wait till next year.” I remember the swell entertainment provided by Donna Wold, Tom Smith, and many others in the school talent shows. A case of the mumps complicated matters for the cast of “The Imaginary Invalid”, but the audience weren’t aware of any difficulties. We just sat back and laughed. The main social event of the year for our junior class was the prom. We chose the theme, “Moonlight Serenade” and the colors blue and white for the decorations. Wally was prom king and soph Jean Reynolds was queen. Delores Tenjum won recognition for her skill in shorthand on award day. It was our junior year, too, when Betty Anderson received a local award for her artistic talent. Then, all of a sudden, my junior year was over. My classmates assumed an air of sobriety as they entered the last and most important phase of high school life. The weeks seemed to speed by and before I knew it, graduation had come. My soph year was really fun, my junior year was even funner, and my senior year was the funnest of ’em all. The regular names were on the honor roll again, and yours truly began to wonder how Jerry Schockmel, Elizabeth Middleton, and Harry Marsh did it. Some of the familiar couples seen in the halls were Don Sprague and Donna Schultz, Al Sherman and Jeannette Boehnan, Tim DiPiazza and Gharlene Lanham, and Turk Fruth and Shirley Baltzell. Dick Gooley and Mary Adkins were often seen together, as were Bob Teegardin and June Gleary, Jim Kohl and Kitty Garter, and Don Finn and Diane Donis. Another amazing couple which will never be topped was Regina Lynch and Marie Hodgson. Their friendship was equaled by that of Dorothy Gill and Rosemary Pickarts. Some of the famous cars of our senior year were those of Rod Sperle, Gerald Svetnicka, Norm Dawson, Fuzzy Fumusa, Gerald Kratochwill, Reg Bleck, and, last but not least, Dick King and Moe Cefalu. Dick and Moe bought their souped-up job so one could drive while the other pushed. [73] I didn’t have to ask Ruth Doris, Joyce Wallace, Genevieve Him, Kay Ihde, and Joan West-bury about future plans; they wore new diamond engagement rings. New members of our class were Babe Anderson, Donna Matteson, JoAnn Peronto, Joann Schmid, Carol Titley, Conna Moore, and Nancy Natwick. Every two weeks, Mirror editor Bob Ross had new problems as headlines, deadlines, and bylines raced through his mind. Loyal members of the ushers’ club were Duane Dilley, Merle Zimmerman, Wayne Meiller, Selmer Natvig, and Bob Bnistman. In charge of lighting, etc., at plays were the electricians’ club. Some senior members were Roger Barringer and Gordon Sierens. The Central band enjoyed their trip to Janesville and helped give the football team some rousing support. Doster DeHaven was first officer of the band, and some of “Little Doc’s fellow members were John Brown, Evelyn Moungey, Lola Cook, and Barbara McKieman. We were really thrilled by the terrific concerts the music department put on. The choir’s big event of the year was the comic opera “The Marriage of Nannette.” Leads were cast to Jo Raimond, Tommy Coynes, Nick Galanos, Pat Roberts, Ruth Doris, Betty Figler, and “Scrammy” McDonald. Some of the chorus members were Dorothy Amera, Louise Genge, and Dorothy Beckett. Our senior class officers were Wally, again as president, and Marie as secretary. Conway Curtin was elected vice president, and Walt Bigley was treasurer. The weight lifting boys of our class included Don Walker, Roger Levis, Jim Smithback, and Conway himself. One fellow I was very proud to know was Dick McCann. There was always a joke or a prank of some sort if Dick was around. Dick Wayne was manager of the basketball team for his third year. The tournaments went swell, and loyal followers of the team on the chartered bus were Arnold Odden, Delbert Bender, and Carolyn Hauge. The “Green Hats” kept things going on those buses. At school, things were kept lively by Sam Ramos, Brad Teasdale, and Art Henriksen. Doreen Marshall was kept busy managing the candy counter and getting straight As’ but was not too busy to earn a music award. Most of the seniors held part-time jobs. I used to see Helen Jorgensen at the Wolff Kubly switchboard, and Helen Knox at her Strand theater job. Dorothy Amera’s overnight case was her trademark as an established baby-sitter. Mary Harrington, Hal Kluth, and “Ish” Krash were busy morning and night taking orders for class gards. Remember the fun we had when they came? And then it was all over. I shall never forget the many activities in which I participated, the teachers with whom I worked, and the school work with which I struggled. But I needed more time. There never was enough time for all the things I wanted to do. Sports, clubs, publications, and — of course — school work; how did I ever crowd all those things into three short year? I won’t ever forget the fun I had at Central. It’s all over now, but as I leave, I take with me fond memories of the three most colorful years of my life. [74] Junior High Miss Vida V.
