Like thousands of defense workers day after day going to vital war work, we have climbed the worn cement steps in the above picture which lead us to Central, our factory of learning. With Mr. Waehler as the executive officer of this democratic firm and the faculty as the advisory board, we students have tried to be a production crew worthy of any assembly line. Like any factory group we have bettered conditions, formed a government among our- selves, worked overtime to meet schedules, and fought morale breakers and absenteeism. Our free hours have been filled with fun, pranks, entertainments, and the humor of typi- cal school life, making at times a factory of fun. This annual is to show you readers that in a year of war we have adapted ourselves to war time thinking and still have maintained the age old traditions of high school. ill Dedication When the grey rohetl menihers of the Class of IQ44 cross the Central High School stage to receive tliplonias, and when the strains of l'omp and Cirf euinstante' remintl those present of the importance and soleinnity of the occasion, there will he a num- her ol' hoys missing-hoys who for years have also looliecl lorwartl to the tlay of coniinenceinent. There is one who has heen a next tloor neighhor, one who startetl ltintlergarten with the group, one who translerretl as a ninth gratler from halt' way across the country: there are thirty-live in all. For one reason or another, their etlucations are heing completed in the service of Uncle Sain insteatl ol' with their chiltlhootl frientls and classmates. llut wherever they are, in camp, at sea, or on the hattle fronts doing their hest to estalmlish the itleals ol a great country antl a great people throughout the worltl, on this tlay their thoughts will prohahly he here, antl they will know ai longing to share in this experience. But to others of us there was a decided difference. It was the last year many of us were to spend in school, and it was our last year together as classmates. It gave us a queer feeling when we realized that fact. About 40 per cent of our class entered Central Iunior High in seventh grade. Then in ninth grade our class was for the most part completed. There have been withdrawals and additions to the class, but the group that started on their Central High School careers in 1939 have been the main body of our class, among whom we have made many lasting friendships during our three years in senior high. When after Pearl Harbor some of our classmates left us, we decided to get into this war too. The Victory Corps was brought into the school, and with it started stamp and bond sales, and scrap drives. Special courses such as Physical Fit- ness, War Backgrounds, and Pre-Aviation, were introduced Elaine Postler Raymond Ray Class of 1945 Beverly Evans Orpha Ohnstad Audrey O'Neill to the school curriculum. We were determined to do all we could to help win the war. Then suddenly graduation loomed ahead of us. There were so many things to be done, class meetings, class elec- tions, class night committee appointments, that time just Hew by. Faces of teachers and fellow students whom we had seen five days of the week, nine months of the year, for four years took on a special attraction when we realized we would not see many of them next fall. In an ordinary year we could say to each other, See you next fall at the U., but war changed that. The majority will either be in the armed forces or will be working. So we say good-bye to Central and the happy days we spent there. We will never forget her, for we grew up with- in her walls. Our grateful thanks go to those who have prepared us to meet what lies in the future. The class of '44 salutes you, Central! You're the best school in the land! Many of the games were close, but it seemed as though Central just didn't click at the right moment. However, throughout the whole season, the team played for all they were worth right up to the Final whistle. The two games which Central won were with Kenosha and East. The hest game of the season was played at Kenosha. The team was at their best, and the boys had line team- work. Bernie Ralminowitz made several long runs during the game with the help Of blocking and tackling. During the Beloit game, Rabinowitz returned a punt for 90 yHfdS for the only touchdown of the game. Some of the boys who did line playing throughout the season were Don McAdams at left tackle, who was selected on the All-City Team, Maurie VVeaver who played well at right guard, Tony Puccio who did a hang-up job at center, halfhack, and tackle: Bob Nelson at quarterhackg Don Kaufman and Iohn Fiscus on the endsg and lid Moran as a blocking halfback and runner who cannot he forgotten. The winning of the East game was undoubtedly the outstanding feat of the season. The long-standing Armistice Day rivalry resulted in a Fine game. The same eleven boys played the whole game except for the last forty seconds, when Lemke was injured in the mouth and Morgan replaced him. The following boys were letter winners: Russ Bates, Ronald Caucutt, Iohn Iimieson, Iohn Fiscus, Phil Hyslop, Don Kaufman, Iunior Lemke, Don McAdams, Ed Moran, Bernard Morgan, Bob Nelson, Tony Puccio, Bernie Rabinowitz, Stan Thaden, Maurie Weaver, Eddie Withers, and Sol Zaichick. Central started the season oil with a nonlconference game at Portage. lanesville was the next opponent. Central started out fast, cooled oil, and just managed to hang on. We then played East here and won with lid Moran's hasket in an overtime. liurns letl lfast with I3 points. Horlick was iust too hot to liandleg they did excellent shooting. ln the Kenosha game Wagner did unusual defensive work against Congdon. However, Kenosha had too much all around power in shooting and Silt. The first game with West was at a disadvantage for Central hecause four of their hoys were six feet or over. Wagner again displayed line defensive work on Page, and Withers was the offensive power with 12 points. The next game was with Park and there was excellent playing all around. This was VVagner's last game hefore going to the Air Corps. Vile then played lanesville here, and the game was lost at the free throw line. lid Moran played his hest game of the year. The lfast game was a typical city series. We lost in the last ten seconds when Deauchamp threw in a long shot. ln the llorlick game there was a renewed spirit. and Central came out on top. The scoring was led hy Puccio. The Kenosha game was douhle overtime. hut the hreaks just didn't come our way. The team played well enough to win, hut was seriously handicapped in the overtimes hy the loss of all three centers, Marsh, Withers, and Springman. The next night we played Pilfli and played reasonahly well the first half. There was a terrific let down in the third quarter, and ht-fore snapping out of it Park was too far ahead. Un the two-day trip Puccio turned in the hest performance. ln the last game, West grahhed a hig lead and kept it all the wily- VVe then played Fast for the regionals. liast was leading 23 to lo with one and one-half minutes left, and Central came through and tied the game. ln the OVCFUIIIC. Cvlllflll l111lllC two haskets and liast made none. Central now went to the tournament at Mayville. They defeated Mayville hy a score of 43 to 27. On the following Friday. Central again went hack to play Columhus, hut lost 30 to .3-l. The lettermen in haskethall were: Tony Puccio and Dick VVagner, co-captainsg Don Burwell. Bert Kraus, Dick Springman, Iohn Berg, Tom Fuller, Dick Marsh, Carlton Moran, Bernie Rahinowitz, Ed Moran, lohn Thom, and Eddie VVithers. l33l Track SCHEDULE West Relays-April 8 East Dual-April 21 Wisconsin High-April 25 West Dual-May 5 Big Eight Meet-May 15 WIAA Sectional Meet-May 20 City Meet-May 26 Central's athletes did not turn out for track in as big a group as Coach Diehl would have liked, but despite the small squad, they have done a good job. The boys who went out and stuck with it are: Ed Austin, Dave Barnes, Iim Bates, Leroy Bonham, Don Bur- well, Dennis Dilley, Gerry Fruth, Tom Fuller, Walter Fumuss, Ioe Gentry, Don Grubb, Phil Hylsop, Iim Knox, Don McAdams, Ed Moran, Tony Puccio, Bernie Rabinowitz, George Schefliler, Bennie Thomas, Ed Withers, and Iohn Fiscus. In the West Relays, Central Finished ninth in a group of 11 teams. The total number of points was 17. East won in a dual meet by a score of 74M to 38H. Central defeated Wisconsin High 752 to 37M with a fine job done all around. West defeated Central in the dual meet 95 to 18. We lost Fiscus the day after the West meet to the Navy. He had scored seven of the 18 points in the meet and was awarded his letter at the close of the event. Sectional Meet-at West-May 27 Of the boys who went out for tennis, nine saw the season through. They are: Ed Mor- gan, Dick Springman, Harold Rinke, Bert Kraus, Iim Gill, Dick Viviani, Bob Heim, Frank Wood, and Richard Beil. Ed Morgan was number one many Springman, number twog Rinke, number three, and Viviani, number four for the singles matches. The other boys were divided among the doubles. Three postponed matches were held on May 15 at East, May 17 at Wisconsin High, and May 18 at West. These were all dual matches. 15oH Central s golf team is about on a par with the one last year. The members are Paul Kinsella, number one mang Iohn Berg, number two, Bernie Rabinowitz, number three, Bud Fischer, number four: and Ben Levin, number Five. Roy Martin is an alternate. Don Schiro, an asset to the team, has been held out most of the season because of an operation. West defeated Central twice and East did the same. Central, however, came through and beat Wisconsin High. This was due to Ben Levin's playing. The score was tied at the eighteenth hole, and Levin's ball was up on a small knoll off the green. Levin dubbed the ball and sank it to win the hole and also the match. Mr. William Marsh, coach of golf, feels that the game is one of the finest there is because it can be carried on after one leaves school.
