SEELY Sponsor FOREWORD The sound of happy voices, the spirit of good sports, the molding of ideals and aspirations — all blend into our high school experiences. With sincere hopes of bringing a worthy souvenir of these significant days at Madill High School to its many loyal students, the staff has devoted many hours of work. We feel that your satisfaction with this volume is our compensation and with this thought the STAFF presents the 1953 WILDCAT. We, the annual staff, dedicate this volume of the 1953 WILDCAT to all the graduates. To those who are in school now and to those who enter, in years to come, we dedicate this record of classes, activities, sports, and school life in all of its phases. We sincerely hope that M. H. S. will be as dear to you as it is to each of us and that your school days will be as happily and as profitably spent as we feel that ours have been. First Annual Staff in three years begins work. They are Ginger Parker, Rowina Underhill (seated), F atsy Mansfield, Anne Hamill, Jane Beavers, Gene Johnson (seated). Virginia Landram, Linda Johnson (seated), Cornelia Lemmons, Joan Smiley, Bar- bara Clark, Jan Ayres, Mary Bess Stephenson, Mary Beth Gump. THE GYMNASIUM Was erected in 1944, is the scene of basketball and volleyball games and physical education classes. MADILL HIGH SCHOOL Madid's second high school building was erected in 1940, replacing the old two-story struc- ture built in 1909 and razed in 1939. It has thirteen classrooms, a printing room, auditorium, an office suite and cafeteria. I THE MUSIC BUILDING The newest of the school plant, was erected in 1947, and has four practice rooms, a band room and two office rooms. THE SHOP It was built in 1942, ft also houses one class, vocational agriculture. The Annual Staff and Sponsor made a wise choice in dedicating the WILDCAT to our former graduates. I am sure this volume will bring memories to them and strengthen the ties which bind us together. The passing of time has helped to evaluate the training of our former students and we can now partially evaluate such intangibles as initiative, dependability, resourcefulness, co-operation, and attitudes developed while in school. We are sure the courage and stamina of the BLACK AND GOLD of old M.H.S. will always inspire them to higher attainments. Our best wishes will continue to follow them wherever they may go and in whatever they may do. May I extend my congratulation and appreciation to Mrs. O. E. Seely and the ANNUAL STAFF for their untiring efforts in making this volume possible. Yours very truly, Tty M. C. COLLUM, Superintendent Madill Public Schools Annual Staff, Students and Alumni of Madill High School: Your untiring efforts and co-operation exemplified in this wonderful under- taking of preparing a yearbook for this community again this school year of 1953 makes me feel very proud of being a member of this great team. We, who have very little to do regarding the actual make up of this book, do not realize, as the staff does, just how much work and time goes into a project of this type. The result of the labors of a few is appreciated by all and I know there will be real joy in the years ahead for each who is fortunate enough to have this ANNUAL in his own library. AAay I wish all of you the greatest happiness and success in the future because of your accomplishments in the past. Sincerely, A. A. EMMETT MERAZ Assistant Coach FOOTBALL QUEEN and ESCORTS Bearl Crockett, Patsy Mansfield, Queen Earline Clark, Freddy Lemmons, David White, Patsy Marlow, and Gary Bane, helmet bearer. This shot from the Madill-Atoka game shows some of the drive the Wildcats had during this 1953 season. Everett Putman took a pitch-out from Glendyl Armstrong for a wide-end sweep, gaining yardage. The Madill Wildcats, who were district champions in 1951, looked like sure winners again this year, but the team was riddled with injuries and lost the big game to Purcell, 19 to 0. The Wildcats ended the season with five wins, four losses and one tie. All during the day, you could see students trying their skill at a game of tennis. Then Coach Meraz started helping these people improve their knack, by teach- ing tennis at the sixth hour. When it rained, they practiced strokes in the gym, but when the sun was out, it was hard to find anyone that wasn't in the mood for a good, quick game of tennis. You're on the nose , announced Loreeta Cobb, time keeper for the radio play that placed first at Shawnee December 12, 1952. The cast included Edwina Walker, sound effects, loreeta Cobb, Junior Gaylor, Ginger Parker. Jack Davis, and Ramona Smiley. These shots from the Junior-Senior Banquet help show The Merry-Go- Round-of Life that was lived. The clowns that served the food; the fortune teller; and the magic tricks that were preformed. Ringmaster, Everette Putman, strut- ted his skill. For weeks you could see Juniors running here and there, trying to find all the parts to their Circus Parade that was used for table decorations. They worked hard in putting up the big tent. All this went into a wonderful evening that was enjoyed by every- one present. Because of the hard work of these ladies, hot meals were served to all the students who ate in the cafeteria. Many hours were spent in prepar- ing these meals and much time was spent in serving all of the banquets. They are: Mrs. Bill Stroud, Mrs. C. D. Turner, Mrs. Fred Shipley, Mrs. John McClure, Mrs. Mittie Coe and Mrs. Betty Sandefur. Members of the National Honor Society who took pari in the initiation were: Tom- mie Oiler, Clydeane Coker, Gene Johnson, Ginger Par- ker, Murna Christofferson, Doris Barentine, Mary Mur- phy, Jeannette Bourland and Lynda Await. The initiation of new mem- bers was held when the N.H.S. had their annual spring banquet. Hot Lickers was a name on every ones tongue. These boys played for almost all ocas- sions. The band was composed of Bill Thomp- son, Toney Goodman, Bob Helms, Robert Favors, Jack Davis and Junior Gaylor. The Library Staff includes: Miss Mildred Holland, Julia Wheeler, Mary Stephenson, Julia Poole, Ramona Smiley, Sue Wert, Barbara Rogers, Evelyn Glenn, Mary Beth Gump, Janet Wimpy, Alene Woodring, Doris White, Betty Murphy, Edwina Walker, Verzella McGill and Darrell Ard. The Library, under the supervision of Miss Mildred Holland, provides books and reference materials for all of the high school students. The librarians are kept busy but they look up long enough to have this picture made. TWIRP Season finds Jan Ayres and Sandra ■Lawrence paying for Pete Johnson's and James Roger's tickets to the show. That explains the big smiles on their faces and the relief for their pockets.
