Belov row f This year marks the two hundredth anniversary of this great country. It is also a year featuring an outstanding senior class at Madera High School—the graduating class of 1976. Our forefathers of two centuries ago were blessed with an awesome degree of both insight and foresight. From their marvelous abilities, succeeding generations have been granted the opportunies and the challenges to proceed and progress under the flag of freedom. You seniors have now inherited those opportunies and those challenges, both of which are greater in enormity than ever before in our history. Now you will face the supreme test. This nation will flourish or falter under your guidance. | am confident without reservation that with your caliber you will meet this test with flying colors, and when your task is finished this country will be even a better place to live than it was in 1976. VICE PRINCIPAL At i —— f-.. —eZ The 1975-76 school year at MHS started off much more organized with much less confusion due to the new Walk Around Registration (WAR) in operation for the first time at MHS. Freshman orientation came early in the week; Freshmen students met in the boys gym where the band played and pep girls did routines, Student Body Officers, learning coordinators, advisors, vice-principal and principal were all introduced who then informed the students of all the necessary information. At the end of the week the Sophomore, Junior and Senior students began their registration. Students reported to the gym in order of groups decided last Spring. They then continued on to the Language Arts to register. Reasons for the change in registration were to limit confusion by allowing students to choose the courses, teachers, and periods they wanted to take the course. Naturally, if you were in the last group in your class to register, you may have had to make some adjustments in your schedule. Along with registering, students were given an opportunity to buy their student body cards and 1976 annuals and choose their lockers. Mr. Gerry Johnson, Junior learning coordinator, was in charge. = Below: Berry Benard can't get untangled from all of the red tape of Madera High's new form of registration. FRESHMAN ENGLISH The exciting and overpowering freshman Blue Football Team was a success not only from the standpoint of win and loss, but also from the experience taught to each player. A 5-2 record was carried mainly by the most dependable players such as Michael McCallister, Victor Valdiva, Kent Sagouspe, and Greg Johnson, but still other players had a lot to do with the victories of Madera. With so many players interested in football, Madera has two squads to give players more action and experience. The second squad for Madera Freshman football is the White team. The best of the white team were Frank Urrutia, Ricky Madellin, and Ben Galindo. These were the players who always were the ones who gave 100%, and it was thes e people who helped the team end with a 4-1 season. Many of the gridders had experiences that will boost their spirits for years to come. The players were also taught the value in setting goals for oneself and it is this that gave the players a feeling of accomplishment. Leaders in everyway were also the most dependable players such as Richard Rodriquez, Chris Solorio, Craig Wilcox, Verlin Bishop, and Jim Fergeson. The ‘‘mean machine” varsity football squad had a winning season this year—in many respects—but were plagued with injuries that kept them from being successful on four occasions during the long season. Many of the players have worked since their freshman year on the field and have put hours of time for the entertainment of the students. The Coyotes scored impressive wins over Chowchilla, Fresno High, and Roosevelt. Defensively the team sparkled under the constant onslaught of Rick Parsons, Gary Chavira, John Diaz, and Corey Miller. Offensively the team sputtered frequently, but when they did move down the field it was usually with authority. Standouts on offense were LeRoy Gaffney, Rick Parsons, Allen Crump, and surprisingly consistent place kicker Dan Ascanio. The K-FIG discjockeys came alive during the second half when the Madera Coach, Mrs. Avila, replaced the faculty with the girl members of the team. At the opening of Mr. Sharp’s performance, he informed his audience of the art of Hypnosis and then the show began. Hypnosis brought impressions of Elvis Presely to Mr. Sharp standing on a student's stomach. Other demonstrations were a “Jaws” attack, scaring the hypnotized students half out of their wits. There were also ‘visits’ from Helen Reddy and Ike and Tina Turner. Some students found their chairs becoming increasingly hot as they thought about a certain subject. The Madera High students were extremely impressed with the work of Mr. Sharp at the end of his performance. An evening performance was arranged by the Junior Class since the response from the assembly was so great. The evening show allowed people other than students to see Mr. Sharp in action. LIBRARY DEDICATION The Madera High Biology Club started out the year by electing new officers. The President, Steve Warner, along with the other officers: VP- Mark Guglielmana, Treasurer- Mike Gong, Secretary- Cheryl Ohashi, got things rolling by putting together some money-making ideas and came up with a bike-a- thon. In order for the bike-a-thon to be a success each member had to go out and get sponsors for the 22 mile trip. The sponsors paid so much for every mile ridden by the student. The success of the bike-a-thon and other minor projects enabled the club to retravel to Golden Gate Park and to the Vintage Days at Fresno State. Some students also planned to participate at the Davis Picnic Day at UC Davis in April. Sophomore biology helped to further the Madera High students knowledge of human nature and its surroundings. There are three types of sophomore biology. First is the one for those students who plan to attend college. College prep- biology entails a term paper, flower collection and more memorization. The other two classes are general biology and Introduction to Life Science. These classes are more practical for daily use. Another biology class offered here is Advanced Biology. It has a pre-requisite of college prep biology. The 1st semester deals with the invertebrate family which includes learning about the butterflies and other insects. While in the second semester the students learn about human anatomy and other vertebrates. This class also requires the students to do an extensive insect collection. During his third year at Madera High, MR. DAVID TINKLE has been kept busy with classes in College Prep Biology, Advanced Biology, and Introduction to Life Science. In addition to all of his classes he was the Biology Club advisor. Before teaching at Madera High, Mr. Tinkle attended Fresno State and the University of British Columbia, where he majored in Life Science and General Science. In Mr. Tinkle’s spare time, (If and when he can find the time), Mr. Tinkle enjoys Organic Gardening, wine making, and he also likes to play the guitar. Above: “Eyes on your own paper Linda!” The new music room had a lot of business this year after the completion of the new building. When the building was completed, Acappella, mixed glee, and Madera High's piano classes moved in and enjoyed the Space after being cramped into one of the rooms in the Girl’s Gym. In addition to the extra space, Mrs. Worthington, the Director of the latter classes said, “The new structu re will also improve the quality of the vocal and piano music. Acappella sang throughout the 1975-76 school year; performances were held at the Women’s Improvement Club, Rotary Club, the Methodist Church for the Women’s Group, and they also sang at the local convalescent homes. Acappella was the headliner for the Christmas program held in December and also participated in the Annual Music Revue held at Madera High. Acappella was accompanied on the piano by Joan Lewis and Judy Aoki. Mixed Glee joined in the singing by participating in what was a new feature this year at Madera High called the Spring Concert which was held for the student body. Students who wanted to improve their quality of piano playing enroll in Mrs. Worthington’s Advance piano class. Each week the students gave a recital, each student playing a different piece. The marching band kept things going at various sports events in an effort to keep spirits high. It was Fred Holloway, the 1976 drum major, who led the band into all of their experiences and without his leadership among the students the band would not have been as outstanding as it was. Mr. Holloway was also very dependent on Mr. Gary Stelting. He was the director of all the bands and he kept the music coming. The excitement at the halftime of varsity football game was brought out even more by the marching band. The band put in hours of work for the entertainment of the fans. The band came up with new and original ideas to keep the shows interesting and demonstrated the wonderful talent at Madera. The musical talents were especially brought to a climax when both the dance band and symphonic bands put a touch of class into the 1976 Musical Review. Many people had expressed their thanks to the wonderful performance. Many of the members of these bands have been working in music since their grade school years and now the participants are blossoming into fine artists in the music field. Music will always be a part of the souls of many, and all musicians will be proud to be a part of the Coyote bands. This year, Madera High's outstanding marching and symphonic band were under the direction of MR. GARY STELTING. He has helped the band make great progress in the musical field and has set many high standards for the students to strive for. He attended the University of Missouri where he graduated with a M.A. in music. Past time interests for Mr. Stelting are photography and music. During the week prior to vacation, Student government sponsored a Christmas tree decorating party in the evening. Many students came to the festive occasion to have hot chocolate, popcorn and converse with friends. In college at UC Davis and Fresno State, Mrs. Sierra majored and or minored in chemistry, zoology, and psychology. Mrs. Sierra gradua ted with a B.S. degree. JUNIOR CLASS ADVISORS BRIDGES SUILDING SPARKS INTEREST IN PHYSICS One thinks of STRAIN in connection with the many athletic pursuits at Madera High, but in the Science and Math Departments when one mentions strain most likely one will think of the annual toothpick Bridge Building contest. The contest, supervised by MR. ROBERT SMITH and MRS. CHERYL GOLLMER, is open to any student taking mathematics or physics classes. The principles involved in constructing these toothpick monoliths are much the same as in the construction of similar steel structures: namely, the ratio of the weight of the bridge to the weight of the object(s) exerting force is calculated to determine the ability of the bridge to stand stress. The basic rules of the contest are quite simple: only flat toothpicks horizontally placed can be used. The toothpicks are held in place by white glue and the bed can be only two toothpicks thick. At the time of this writing, last year’s winner Mark Suneson, Kevin Dunshee, Lori Martin, Nancy Bartow, and Randy Durbin were a few of the entries in this event. Above: Bobby Brown and Tony Kirk would like you to meet their new- found friend Herman. CHEMISTRY BRIDGE BUILDING CONTEST Above: Mark Suneson declares, “| can break it with my bare hands.” ha WH This year, as every other year, Chemistry was taught by MS. SALLY CADENAZZI and MS. KATHY SIERRA. Ms. Cadenazzi’s motto for Chemistry is ‘‘Chem. is Fun.’’ Her day is composed of six periods of experiments, questions and answers and, of course, lectures. The period begins by correcting the previous day's homework assignment and answering any possible questions the students may have over the chapter. She will then begin her lecture for the new section and homework is again passed out. Miss Cadenazzi has a different technique of teaching. She may occasionally grade the homework but generally the student is given a choice of whether he or she wants to do the homework or not, depending on whether or not he or she plans to do well on the test. But it is left up to the student. In Ms. Cadenazzi’s class you can never ask too many questions or fall asleep (but you can't fall asleep mainly because she won't let you). Ms. Sierra is mainly a Biology teacher but has added a Chemistry class to her schedule and makes it a very interesting class for the students. Hitting was the whole success of the baseball season. It is the one element that Coach STAN BLEDSOE feels no team can do without. Once the hitting came through time was spent on fielding. Defense is what keeps the game close and it is necessary in a winning season. The fine art of baseball will always be one of hits, runs, and fielding, but it will be the job of the players to put it all together on the field. As Coach Bledsoe says, ‘‘Make them play our kind of baseball: force them to commit the mistakes and the result will always be a winning season. Tom Cook says, “Get off my back umpire!” Annette Garcia Onesimo Garcia Pete Garcia Raymond Garcia Rodger Garcia Greg Garner Convoy Garner VARSITY BASEBALL The J.V. baseball team had a strong outlook on their season. The real problem this year was the pitching staff. Coach Millard Henderson felt ‘‘If the pitching held out then we would have a good season.” The strong points of the team were the excellent hitting and fielding. The main batters were David Ascanio, Tony Ashford, Chris Solorio, Charlie Chavira, David Chavira, and Ken Jimenez. The infield was one of the best in the N.Y.L. Coach Henderson put much effort into the speed of the team. In order to win a team needs runs and the ingredient for scoring was speed on the base paths. Many close plays were won with that ingredient. The spirit of determination was one thing the J.V. baseball team had much of. They put their minds to work on the field and performed to the last of their physical ability. This is what gives any team a winning season. “Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy, ...’° could have been heard on the football or baseball field, and in a social science class, as it was a favorite motto of Madera High's MR. MILLARD HENDERSON. Mr. Henderson taught U.S. history, sociology, and is also a part of the coaching staff of football, (the freshman blue team), and J.V. baseball. Mr. Henderson attended Fresno State where he majored in history and minored in physical education and geography. Upon graduating Mr. Henderson received a B.A. and A.A. degree. The top players for the team were Frank Urrutia, Sergio Molina, Rick Medillin and Ben Solorio. These players always gave 100%. Baseball is a game of hits, runs and speed. These are the basic needs of a good baseball player. To beat a team it requires all of these. One thing that Coach BILL ASTON feels is that there is no excuse for mental errors. Often players who are found to have committed a mental error are running after the game. The result of this running is generally a better ball player. The Freshman team always is the beginning for the men who will be Madera’s future Varsity Diamondmen. Matt Hill is rearing back to fire a man out at first. Mark Wright throws a strike for the third out. FRESHMEN BASEBALL Above: Miss Avila teaches her squad some of their winning techniques. Above: Dorothy Rivera shoots one of her many scoring shots. During their second year in league, Madera High's Girls Varsity Basketball team is showing a lot of potential. Their major drawback is their lack of experience. With only two returning players from a very small 1975 squad, they are young and are still learning many new techniques. Due to their strong defense headed by Denise Bishel, Natalie Crump, and Donna Ashford, Madera holds their opponents to low scoring. Backing up the defense is Kathy Haynes making an average of twenty points per game. Overall the team has improved tremendously and is still going strong. Abo Abo Above: Denise Bishel out jumps her opponent. Above: Kathy Haynes prepares to receive a pass from Denise Bishel. This is the first year that a Junior Varsity Girls Basketball Team has been formed. The girls are learning many new techniques about the game. The team as a whole is very small. This serves to their advantage and disadvantage. Where the opposing teams are much bigger than Madera, the girls have to work hard for the points they get. Being small though, Madera has a very quick team and their major move is the fast break. Also, on defense, being quick and aggressive, they intercept and steal many passes. Dorothy Rivera is the squad's major offensive player, scoring the most points. Backing the offensive up is Janice Long and Loraine Flemming with their quickness in intercepting passes. The Presentation was not only entertaining, but was also very informative as it showed the many branches that the department has developed. This year, the Girl’s P.E. program has operated basically on the idea of Team and individual activities emphasis for Freshmen and Sophomores, and the stress of the recreational aspect of Physical Education for Juniors and Seniors, in which they choose their activity electively every four weeks from a choice of three selections- two coed, and one all girls. The types of activities offered not only included track, basketball, soccer, and volleyball, but activities such as Bowling, First Aid, Figure Control, Lifesaving, and Gymnastics were also offered. The six teachers, Mrs. Waag-department chairman, Miss Avila, Mrs. Lucas, Mrs. Pisk, Mrs. Holloway and Mrs. Mitchell, each gave an all out effort to make Physical Education fun, and full of action!!!
