I have learned a lot during my stay here and Iâve enjoyed my stay much. Iâve learned among other things, the meaning of the AFS motto: âPeace Through Understandingâ, in that though our cultures are different, I will always be of both the San Joaquin Valley and the Rhineland. Love. Rudolf Wenz âStille Nacht, Hielige Nacht... â sings RudolfWenz as Kathy Johnson | accompanies on the piano. AFS AFS Has ââFun-tasticââ Year Many enlightening events sparked an exciting year for the American Field Service Club. Of the many find-raising projects, probably the most exciting was the basketball game of the Redheads versus the menâs faculty, in which half the proceeds went to the club. Other projects included an International dinner in February, and a German candy sale. They also sponsored an AFS student from Venezuela staying in Exeter for Exchange week. All these projects were designed to sponsor Marcel Mattingly, our own AFS student to Argentina, and Rudolf Wenz, our foreign exchange student from West Germany, who stayed with the Dr. McClure family during the year. The AFS club helps students to explore and examine many nationalities. It shows that there is definitely an âInternational Flavor,â in our own community. Wenz, L. Ring, E. Pisano, M. Mendez, S. FBLA Has Busy Year The Future Business Leaders of America is a national youth organization for any student enrolled in high school business programs interested in joining. Led by Advisor Mr. Gary Melvin, the club sponsored many annual events this year that helped in molding skills needed for the business world. The many conferences and efficiency contests were such events. In October they had their fund-raising activities for their field trip to San Francisco in November. In December, their concern was focused on a needy family and presented them with a food parcel for the clubâs community service project. The conferences and competition then followed with the spelling and typing contests winding up the year. The officers for the â74-75 year were President-Lori Leach, Vice President-Donna Garrison, Treasurer-Terry Dawson, and Secretary- Gracie Griffin. Was the theme for this yearâs Fashion Show put on by the Fashion Merchandising Class. Two shows were held on March 20, one during lunch, and the other that same evening. Twenty-one girls modeled fashions from the past, present, and future with Geraldine Harvey and Peggy Watrous as the commentators to the sounds of Welfare. Special features of the show were Mr. Brunolli modeling a Roman greek out fit, and Mr. Zupanoich acting as the father of the bride in the Bridal Procession. GIRLâS LEAGUE Magazine Sales Bolster Girlsâ League Year Girlâs League did a lot this school year to add some spark by arranging various activities for the students. They also did many service projects for the school, community, and individuals. The service projects this year included putting an individualized program together for the Math Department, making Christmas cards for two convelescent homes, sponsoring two individuals to the special olympics, and making rock paper weights for teachers. For those of you who do not know what Girlâs League is, itâs a service organization which any girl at Madera High can join, and is led by advisor, Miss Taylor. They also sponsored the Christmas Ball and Blossom Week. Blossom Week was a week in the spring in which many activities took place during the lunch hours. These included the âMr. Coolâ contest in which the goal was to see who could melt a block of ice the fastest by sitting on it, the âMr. Irresistibleâ contest, a fashion show where the girls modeled their spring dresses, and to wind up the week, the Blossom Day Dance, or Backwards Dance, which many people attended and had a good time. At the end of the year, they awarded scholarships to a couple of girls who had been very active in Girlâs League and were deserving. The money in their scholarship fund was made through their annual magazine subscription drive in the middle of the year, which was successful. Health Careers is a club for anyone interested in pursuing a career in the medical field. Club members also contribute their service to the community in various ways. We learn about the many different fields of medicine by inviting guest speakers to come and explain what they actually do in their jobs. Some of the speakers we have had this year include Mr. Bob Olsen, Maternity Nurse Specialist at Valley Medical Center. Mrs. Tyndal, a representative of the Candy Stripers program at Mader: Community Hospital was also a speaker. We also go on field trips in order to better see how a hospital functions. This year we took a tour of Valley Medical Center. Then to wind up the year, we awarded two-$50 scholarships to two eligible seniors intending to pursue a medical career. Cecilia Cazares President cy ATAS Mrs. Vera Johnson; Advisor and School Nurse. Mona Mendez and Lisa Vander Laan listen attentively to a guest speaker on nursing at one of the activity meetings. HEALTH CAREERS Trips And Trash Lead Biology Club Year The Biology Club is designed for those who have or have had biology, and are interested in expanding their knowledge as well as involvement in this area. Ecology was a big area of activity as bi-monthly recycling trips to the Madera Glass Plant were undertaken by members and sponsors. In fact, membership required that each person bring 2 bags of aluminum cans or glass bottles each month for the recycling trips. Recyclables were also collected from various apartments (in special green bins) as the club tried to involve the community in the recycling effort. More pleasurable activities involved a bike trek to Fresno State University to see the habitat museum and the Ag Farm as well as the Renaissance Fair. Members were carted back home in Mr. Tinkleâs truck. The Highlight of the year involved as ill- fated field trip to Morro bay where the tide pool life (tubeworms, Sea anemones, etc.) was taken in. The injured bus broke down west of Kerman and if it were not for a friendly farmer with transmission fluid, the trip might have become an uncomfortable overnight freeze-out. A wild flower trip helped sophomores fill their collections and get closer to nature. President of the Biology Club was Leticia Munoz. Mark Guglielmana served as Treasurer, while Joyce Nishimoto was Secretary. Advisors for the club were Mr. Tinkle, and Mrs. Sierra. This club was assembled for the purpose of interested chemistry students to be able to take field trips as a group. The advisor of this club, Ms. Cadenazzi, also helps in creating an interest by the mere fact that she teaches Chemistry here at school. Their first trip took them to Berkeley to visit the Science Department and view its Bevatron. They have also sent two of their members as representatives to Davis for a Science Symposium which was held in the spring. Sy . i Re Left to Right Front Row: R. Adolphson, J. Bishel, N. The Future Mathematicians of America (F.M.A.), commonly known to the students of Madera High as the Math Club, was one of the new clubs formed this year. Members of this club are students who are taking or who have taken an advanced math class such as Algebra II, Intermediate Math, or Trigonometry. This clubâs main purpose is to stimulate and increase an interest in math. The club has already heard from a speaker from McLane High School and visited the Computer there. MEDITERRANEAN CLUB i SPORT AFFILIATED CLUB If youâve ever wondered what Block M really is, itâs a society made up of about fifty members all of whom are males. To join, the only requirement necessary is to earn a varsity letter in one of the many sports offered here at Madera High. One of Block Mâs main contributions to this school is the week of Homecoming, where they are in charge of the whole weekâs activities. Their service project for the community is collecting toys and canned foods for the underpriveleged families of Madera. Other Block M activities include attending professional sporting events such as viewing a game of Ice Hockey between gies eee ; ls, the Fresno Falcons and the L.A. Other groups, such as Freshman Horizon, C.S.F., F.F.A., and the Mexican- American Club, joined in the fun and each created a float for competition. The night of the Homecoming football game, spectators viewed the hard work that was put into the colorful floats as they paraded around the track. The floats varied from a scene of the Civil War acted out by three coyotes with flashing red eyes, to the Present day with the typical American Male watching Monday night football on the television. In the competition of the floats between the classes, the Juniors took the high honor of first, with Sophomores coming in second and the Seniors in third. The Highlight of the evening, as always, was the crowning of the queen. The finalists, Kari Kirk, Jody Salazar, Claudine Sagouspe, and Elaine LaMattina, were escorted in the traditional style by selected Block M members. In the final moments of this years Homecoming, the President of Block M, Randy Root, crowned Elaine LaMattina as the 1974 Homecoming Queen. The spellbinding excitement of Homecoming sparked the Coyotes into a fantastic win as they aced the McLane Highlanders 15-0. cae tad 4 4 ey im : a Top: âWhat do you mean! canât tie a shoe?â Middle left: A pint-sized car for pint-sized Freshman. They sang, by request, for different service clubs, Churches, and the convelescent hospitals. And for the first time in three years they performed in front of the entire student body at the Christmas assembly. Also this year the choir, along with the band, sponsored a Musical Revue in Febuary, and a Musical Production in the late spring. In addition, the choir helps their seniors by presenting scholarships to them from the money earned in projects throughout the year. GIRLâS GLEE ACAPPEL Jazz and Rock © highlight the Dance Bandsâ musical talent The Madera High School Marching Band started the year marching through formations during football half-time shows. Playing for assemblies, football games and marching in parades headed the activities this year for the band. Trips were planned such as to Disneyland. Candy was sold to raise money for these excursions. Ronnell Williams was the bandâs drum major... . while sounds of Jazz and Rock came from the Dance Band. Their goal was to feel and play different styles of music that would entertain different crowds of people. The Dance Band was asked to play for events such as wedding receptions, dinner banquets, and school assemblies. After attending specialty summer camps in Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz to learn new and better cheers and routines, they came back to Madera High to support their athletic teams all throughout the 74-75 school year. In addition, the girls attended some competition and parades throughout the Valley and Bay areas, and brought back with them ribbons to show the result of their hard work and tremendous school spirit. But also contributing to the lofty cheers that often rocked our tiny gym were the fine efforts of the newly formed assembly board and its advisor, Miss Phyllis Estes. Also an integral contributor to the formulation of assemblies and other special events was Mr. Stan Bledsoe. While most assemblies were outstandingly produced, the first âSports Assemblyâ rated the highest praise in generating spirit and for the dance routine put on by the pep girls entitled âDancing Machine.â With one year of fine assemblies under the schoolâs belt, we look forward to a continuation of the spirit that infected Madera High this year. Annual Staff Takes Optimistic Look at the Future Bolstered by returning staff members Joni Wisner and Gina Poli, the annual class began their operations last summer to finance one of the Valleyâs largest and most colorful yearbooks. A new wrinkle in yearbook sales was implemented, with staff members selling annuals only at the beginning and end of the school year. This proved to be successful. Working on the various sections were: Chris Balbas and Leslie Ohashi, Faculty; Nancy Bartow, Randy Durbin and Cari Cereghino, Underclassmen; Joni Wiesner, Carrie Carter, Gina Poli, and Kathy Johnson, Activities; Cindy Deniz, Denise Torres, and Steve Hammonds, Seniors; Suzanne Dee, and Steve Warner, Sports; Diana Bishop, Leslee Resseguie, and Joe Molina, Advertising; and Lynette Griffin, Ron Radoicich, Rick McCullough, Mike Avery and Tamus Glunz, Photographers. Our cover this year is the blue print of our future high school. We thought that since many of the students would be unable to view these prints, we would use them in our publication of the yearbook, so the students would be able to preview how their high school is going to look. And to harmonize the whole book, we used the poem, âThe Threshold of Life,â by an anonymous author. This poem, as does the blueprint, helps us to look optimistically to the future. Under the consistant co-editorship of Kathy Croom and Elvia Ruiz, the newspaper staff turned out issue after issue at a prodigious rate, with the highlights of the year being the colorful Homecoming and Christmas issues. If anything, the MADERAN moved away from a more academic approach displayed in previous years to one of a total involvement with student issues and their subsequent needs. Revived from MADERAN issues of the past were ââSenior Spotlight,â the âDirty Dozen,â and âSidewalk Survey.â Returning staff members this year were Zoanne Haire, Dawn Schwenck, Karen Huarte, Michelle Egan, Jim DeSanti, Tami Padilla, and Janice Lynn. Prepares For wae The Future One of the programs offered to students to help prepare them for various types of vocations, is the Regional Occupational Program. This program was organized several years ago and is put to use all through Madera County. Students interested in learning occupational skills sign up for this course. This program gives the students a chance to put to use what theyâve learned. One good example is the house that is being built by a few of the R.O.P. students, which you can see in the picture below. The students involved in the house construction project are Rolando Arredondo, Allen Bohard, Oscar Cantu, Robert Gutierrez, Ray Martinez, Greg Moore, Stephen Raviscioni, Michael Reyes, and Salvidor Salinas: and they should be finished by Spring. The R.O.P. classes keep the students inter- ested from beginning to end, so it has proved to be a very successful program. Above: Left to Right, Back Row: Pat Young; Jim Gillette; Huette Lowry. One of the biggest problems at Madera High is the lack of communication between students, administration, and teachers. Perhaps that is why Student Senate is trying to revise the Constitution and Student Government structure on our campus. The new structure would involve more of the student body, relieving some of the communication gap. This was just one out of many items on the agenda this year for Student Senate. Others were, trying to improve the litter problem, sponsoring two nomination conventions, hosting a band and a hypnotist. All these and many more were the accomplishments of Student Senate for the 1974-75 year. If we had to have a motto for this branch of government, it would be âGet Involvedâ â â a Lower Left: Donna Duke listens intently as a problem arises in Student Senate. STUDENT COUNCIL Lt ee Government Structure. This yearâs Student Council, headed by Lee Freeman, fall semester, and Sheri Horn, spring semester had a busy year to confront with. Trying to find a solution to the litter problem was hard enough trying to please both the Student Body and the Administration. Other problems dealt with were trying to better the selection for cheerleaders, and making recommendations for the new human relations officer. Accreditation also took up a great deal of time preparing the different student sections and meeting with the people of the accreditation committee. Meeting with the school board and parent council, provided the community with a look at what student government actually does. Student Council, also in union with Student Senatein trying to revise the constitution and government structure. The Commissioner of Activites, Jody Salazar, had International Week on her hands, during the first week of April. In all, Student Council had a very good year with alot of dedicated people involved. This great class of 1975 has been involved in many new developments at Madera High School. The building program is in progress with seven new structures taking shape on the campus and old structures being demolished. The new additions include buildings for art, business education, and social studies, an agriculture shop area, a library, a music-cafeteria complex, and an athletic field house. Also planned is an open-air amphitheater. Upon final completion, our campus should be a beauty. Our seniors have also seen many curricular changes and a transition to the semester approach as opposed to the traditional full- year offerings. The addition of a new position as director of activities has generated increased student involvement in the activities program. Our student government has been especially active in developing student responsibility along with additional privileges. We were very fortunate to have some outstanding senior leaders. The sports program was superior with many exceptional teams. The advent of girls interscholastic sports proved to be a fine addition to the athletic program as well as a boon to school spirit. We are very proud of this outstanding class. Many of its members will go on to enjoy huge success in whatever are their endeavors. To the class of 1975âcongratulations and best of luck! Robert H. What Happened? Well, first off, head coach Bill Sherman was noted to think that part of it was in the teams phenomenal ââwin-not- loseâ attitude. Also, the team had many experienced returning players from last yearâs squad. Mr. Sherman also mentioned that both offensive and defensive line play has improved greatly over the past year. Enthusiasm is heightening for next yearâs season, too, as players and coaches feel totally optimistic. Madera has 30 returning junior players, four of whom were voted All N.Y.L. Two Seniors were also voted All N.Y.L. while Tony Crump was Most Valuable with Richard Sorria and Dan Stanford team captains. FOOTBALL JV Gridders Share League Title With Clovis The Junior Varsity season was a tremendous success, not only from the standpoint of our win-loss record, but from the many experiences each player had during the season. Some of the players will never play football again at Madera High, so this season has had some impact on their lives and something they will remember for a while. Mr. Bledsoe feels that everyone contributed to the success of the team, but certain players provided the leadership needed at practice and during the games. These players were Tim Sanders, David Juarique, Mark Guglielmana, Tom Cook, and Bernard Urrutia. Football at Madera is definitely on the upsurge due mainly to the efforts of Coach Sherman. When you get 180 students out for football, that is a tremendous accomplishment, considering the program has been down for so long. Everyone knows that winning is the key. It hasnât been easy for Coach Sherman and his staff, but it can honestly be said that the team is over that barrier of losing, and things look a lot brighter and easier from here on out. The J.V. coaches publicly want to thank the following people for making this season successful: Varsity coaches, J.V. players, and the J.V. cheerleaders. This year the varsity squad was practically handed the Valley Championship on a silver platter with a score of 17-59, against the next lowest team, which is the widest margin of victory ever at the yearly Valley meets. In the cross country point system, the lowest scoring team wins. What did.the young team have that brought them to the NYL in their second year of playing? They had what most people call teamwork. Teamwork gives you the ability to win, and most of the time, the game. SOCCER fea Improvement Sparks Exciting Soccer Season In its second year of existence, the spirited Madera High soccer team under the supervision of Coach Eisele, has really worked hard to achieve its goal. The team played well defensively, especially against McLane and Clovis, with Joe Castaneda, Bob Gutierrez, and Fred Holloway leading the squad. Unfortunately, Fred Holloway was injured during the Roosevelt game, preventing him from finishing the season. This year there has been much improvement in the soccer team; however, the Fresno teams still have an advantage over us, as they have been in existence much longer. Coach Eisele is expecting the teamâs winning record to improve as the years progress. BASKET BALL Pride With a lack of height this year, Madera Highâs 1974- 75 Varsity basketball team may have been outsized by other teams, but made up for it by having a 100% âsuperâ attitude, and the true meaning of the word pride. All of these qualities gained respect from the opposing teams during the season. With a complete team effort, Madera scored and rebounded well in such exciting games as against San Joaquin Memorial, and their league opener against McLane. Top scorer for the team was Leonard Lara, and dominating the boards was Allen Crump. A well balanced Junior Varsity squad will replace 7 out of 10 lettermen next year. The future varsity team, like the present varsity team, show the qualities of cager: pride, intensity, and desire. This is shown in their outstanding 12-6 record. What makes this even more outstanding is that three of their losses were to Frosh- Soph teams. A player to mention would be Ed Reed, high Scorer, chalking up 121 points total. Leading rebounders were Tom Soto and Kevin Peters with over 100 rebounds and 100 points each. Finishing a real successful season, the Madera High Varsity Wrestling Team established an impressive 14-2 dual match season. Maderaâs only league loss came after a tough struggle against the undefeated Clovis team for the NYL Championship. Still undaunted however, Madera made a good showing during the Valley Championships, with an outstanding wrestler, Robert Kiddy, capturing the title of Valley Champion. Also placing in the tournament were Loren Leroy, and John Diaz who secured 2nd places; Lawrence Torres, Onesimo Garcia, and Celso Coronado getting 3rd places. Madera also qualified 6 wrestlers to the State Championships held this year in Bakersfield. WRESTLING Wrestlers With A Future The Junior Varsity Wrestlers may not have felt like catapulting into a winning season, but they certainly came out winners. Wrestlers that are Varsity hopefuls next year are Scott Allan, Joe Gamboa, and Vernan Bishop. The only thing putting a damper on them would be the loss to an undefeated Clovis. To remedy this, programs need to be started at the fourth grade level and continued into Junior high. Fresno schools have these programs and are already yielding accomplished wrestlers into their high schools. Madera wrestlers must begin learning basics when they get into high school. According to coach Jane Holloway, these members possess good attitudes and work diligently to win their matches. Being a strong team, they have high hopes for an exceptional season. Madera also has a large, enthusiastic Junior Varsity and Freshman team, whose depth and ability should place them well in league standings. Instead of two teams, a junior varsity and varsity, there was only one varsity team and most of the track meets held were co-ed. There was a strong team effort shown in all events, with Kathy Haynes and Cheryl Hawkins sharing the spotlight in the sprints and long jump, Donna Ashford in the 440, Ester Villaneuva taking the 880, and LeeAnn Stanford in the mile. Dawn Schwenck and Paula Jones conquered the high jump, | with Fay Fleming at the hurdles and shotput. All this and many other efforts taking 2nd or 3rd places in the events proved a very successful year for Girlâs Track. PR ES ee Ee TRACK Above: A part time girlâs track coach, Bob Winkler. Upper left: Cheryl Hawkins and Kathy Haynes vie for the finish line. Left: Adelle Rodriguez takes an early lead in the 880 yard event.
