In the past five years Madera Football has been losing, and, in the progress, being embarassed. The 1972 Coyotes reversed that trend of total domination by every opponent regardless of their talent or dedication. With the exception of one game, the Coyotes played hard-nose physical football with every opponent, never embarassing themselves or Madera High School. What this team leaves for the future football teams to follow is a 100% resolution to victory and the elements that make such an event possible: long difficult hours of mental and physical preparation so that too much of yourself is invested into the program to accept anything but victory. There is a short quote that we believe represents the Madera Football Team's philosophy: “In this world of give and take there are too few willing to give what it takes.” We believe there is change in the wind and that change was caused by the 1972 Football Coyotes. Lower: The Coyotes have a defensive lapse as McLane’s Sam Donabedian ripped off a 15-yard gain. , al ai] Defense again has a meaning in Madera. The 1972 Coyote defense displayed a tenacious, aggressive, and at times fanatical desire to dispose of enemy ball carriers. Pursuit and gang tackling typified the Madera move toward smaller, quicker men who could create the havoc necessary to make the Coyote 4-4 an effective fighting weapon. As any new piece of equipment, the Coyote Defense took time to become oiled. Against Dos Palos, the unit displayed infrequent moments of brilliance while losing 28-12. In their second encounter, Madera’s best travelled to San Luis and lost 21-19. Mental breakdowns and poor tackling right before the half led to an 83-yard run and the game-breaking touchdown. Washington Union came to town with a vaunted passing attack. Holding tha Panther’s ground game in check, the Coyote’s execution versus the pass left much to be desired. A seemingly super. pass defensive effort turned into a nightmare as a tipped pass was caught for a touchdown right before the half. The Coyotes fell, 19-6. The league opener was the flattest exhibition ever displayed. Roosevelt won 21-0, but the defense came alive and held the Roghriders to four (4) first downs in the second half. Homecoming versus Edison! Who can forget Joey Catuiza and Louie Razo and the rest of the defensive unit as they stopped the Tigers cold inside the Coyote five-yard line on a tremendous desplay of ‘sucking it up.” Madera won 7-0. The defense had finally arrived. However, Clovis scored two quick touchdowns and defeated the Coyotes 14-2, delaying the complete arrival somewhat. Defensive adjustments versus the Cougar offensive sets were slow in being made, leading to their one drive of over,90 yards. Ratcliffe Stadium and Bullard was next. ‘Bend but never break” took on an added significance as the Coyote Defense yielded 300 yards to the Knights’ Wishbone, but gave up only six points. A great 21-6 victory versus a Bullard team who in the previous two years had scored 54 and 38 points against Madera, while holding the coyotes scoreless. Although both were lost (23-2, 28-7), these games showed the Coyotes that they could play with the big Fresno “yowers” on any given day. Ineffective tackling led to both losses. The hustle and pursuit were still there. Winding it up at San Joaquin Memorial Stadium and Hoover High School, it all came down to PRIDE. The ravenous pack of Coyotes had it. A O-O deadlock that saw the Patriots move the ball well between the 20-yard lines, only to be stopped cold by the crew of Hill, McGhee, Razo, Catuiza, Imrie, Crump, Badorine, Madole, Freeman, Pitts, Jones and Biscay when they neared the Coyote goal line. Only four seniors made up the thirteen man varsity roster. Though the team was young, it had five players who had previous varsity experience. Included in the returnees is leading rebounder and number two scorer Darrell Smith. Along with Smith, Fred Thomas, Mike Say, Bob Poythress and Ira Farmer started at various ; times last season. The Coyotes were bigger and quicker this year. Coach Gary Adams hoped that improvement in these two areas would mean better team defense and stronger overall team rebounding, two phases of the Coyote game that were weak last year. The teams consistency was a factor in the strong and well balanced North Yosemite League. The Coyotes had improved and had hopes to get better as the season progressed. In addition to the fourteen game league schedule, the Team played seven non-league games and was entered in two tournaments. They were at Sanger December 12, 15 and 16, and entered in the First Annual Warrior Tournament held in Las Vegas, Nevada, December 21, 22, and 23. i Top: Robert Poythress trying to keep Edison from scoring. The theme was “Coyote Country.” The main activities this year started on Wednesday with a semi-authorized bonfire out at a secret location. There was a real nice turnout and was a lot of fun. The next day was the Boy-Girl football game and although the girls were short the action was quick with Rollison’s Foreheads winning 21-14. Friday started early with the judging of the floats with the Senior Class and Mexican-American Club winning the awards. School got out early for the parade and the downtown rally was held at the County Government Center. That night, halftime activities were led by the floats and then the queen candidates—Pat Flores, Terri Taylor, Pauline Uhalde, and Cheryl Haynes. Their male companions for the night were Bob Bruer, Mark Dewitt, Brooks Whitehead, and David Boyle. After the new queen, Pauline Uhalde, was crowned by Block M Vice President Lee Spotts, the Coyotes went on to win our first game of the year and the first homecoming victory in many years by a score of 7-0. ’ aoe i ORE Fat Easy Riders st a By , we 5 2 yo “ wees } oe ey AG; SFO: ACS ot % Pv i s vik vat Homecoming Candidates and their escorts. With an attendance of over 150 couples dressed in their formal attire, were capering to the sounds of ‘Starvation.’ The couples were chauffeured in a bright red sleigh to the midst of the tall Christmas tree which set the scene for the title of “AN OLD-FASHIONED CHRISTMAS.” The creative planning and decorations was done by Girls’ League. With the aid of a few cooperative males they were able to transform the girls’ gym into something that portrayed the feeling of Christmas. Santa Clause, of course, made his appearance in his brilliant suit of red and distributed candy canes to everyone. The evening of December 9, 1972, will be one that will be well remembered. christmas Ball Above: Why did you do that? Left: Going for a sleigh ride Above: Rats, | missed the mistletoe! Foreign Exchange Student from Germany This year has been a very great year for me. To a large extent it was made possible by the student body and the teachers of Madera High School; and, therefore, | would like to thank all of you for the wonderful experiences | shared with you. During my stay | talked to a lot of people, especially to students of Madera High. One of the tasks an A.F.S student has is to promote understanding between the people of different nations. | consider this very important, and so | tried to give people in Madera an idea of what my home in Germany is like, what my life is like, and also why | came here in the first place. My most important reason was that | wanted to learn about a different culture with different people, in order to get a feeling for different nations and to understand the world a little better, but at the same time | hoped to be able to get a better understanding of the American people. | learned a lot during this year and saw things | had never seen before in my life. One of these things was simply the American high school. | experienced the many social activities, which were almost unknown to me in that amount, but which were always a lot of fun. | thoroughly enjoyed my stay in Madera. | had many valuable experiences which will be significant during all my future life. Thank you for everything you gave to me!
