Text from Pages 1 - 264 of the 1972 volume:

Co dream the impossible dream, Co fight the unbeatable foe, 2 2 To bear with u nbearable sorrow, Co run where the brave dare not go. aie. = @ Ln @e 3 : ° Z Co right the unrightable wrong, Co love pure and chaste from afar, Co try when your arms are too weary, Co reach the unreachable star. Chis is my quest, lo follow that star, No matter how hopeless, no matter how far: | Co fight for the right, without question or pause, Co be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause! Aud J know if J'll only be true to this glorious quest, Chat my heart will be peaceful and calm, When J’'m laid to my rest, And the world will be better for this; Chat one man, scorned and covered with scars, Still strove with his last ounce of courage, Co reach the unreachable star. oro : nr re hud ge ete 30h iS vats Keep interested in your own career: however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Cake kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nuture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue lontiness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Cherefore be at peace with God, whatever you concelve Him to be, and whatever your labors aspitations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. At times, things seemed to be hopeless, but as usual the fears and worries were somehow overcome by success. The main function for the Spring President is to help organize Graduation and the Senior Party. It is an awesome task but with the help of the class all went smoothly. | would like to take time to thank our Class advisors for their help and worthy advice. It was deeply appreciated. This club helps students decide whether or not ot pursue the profession of teaching. If so, the students are encouraged to enter the program of teacher education in college or university. Membership of this organization is limited to seniors upon the recommendation of their counselors and a teacher sponsored committee. The activities of the ATOMS include guest speakers, money making projects, a look at the pre-teaching class at Fresno State, and the annual Spring visitation of the elementary schools. The Future Business Leaders of America is the National organization for all young adults in high school and post-secondary institutions enrolled in business programs. The organization, composed of over 4,500 high school and post-secondary chapters, operates as an integral part of the school program under the guidance of business teachers, state supervisors, school administrators, and businessmen. The activities of the Future Business Leaders of America provide an opportunity for business students to prepare for business and office occupations. This year’s Madera Highs FBLA Club went on several field trips to various places such as Duncan Ceramics Factory, Fresno State College. Our next trip will take us to Fresno City College, and 4 C’s College. FBLA also serves as an effective means of bringing the interest of students together to deal with vocational preparation, national problems, community improvement, and worthwhile relationships with local, state, and national groups interested in the welfare of youth. In our cultural activities we celebrate some of the Mexican festivities such as ‘‘el Cinco the Mayo” which has been proclaimed in California as ‘Mexican-American Week”. We also try to provide our members with films and performances by Mexican-American groups. The social activities include special school dances that the club offers and informal get-togethers. Educationally, Mexican-American Club provides information to its members about scholarships and financial aids and hosts representatives from colleges and universities. Service wise, the club helps somewhat in tutoring other students and helping with out-of-school activities whenever they are asked. Mrs. Torres Advisor I Mexican-American Club left: Mexican-American Club meeting during activity period above: Advisors - Mrs. Mayorga, Mrs. Torres, Mrs. Meinz Hava lookela. . . The AFS club provides direct contact between students of different countries in hope of fostering better understanding between cultures. This year the Madera AFS club brought a Vietamese girl Thuy Nguyen to Madera High for a week. She talked to many classes, visited the winery and bottling plant with the club, and gave a talk to interested parents and students one evening. The Club is trying to find a family to host a foreign student for a whole year so the entire student body of the high school will benefit by getting to know a foreign student personally. The club has been raising money to help pay transportation costs to America for the student in the event that we are lucky enough to find a family for a student. If no family is found, no Madera student will be able to take part in the AFS program for Americans studying abroad. The high school AFS is affiliated with the adult national AFS program. oe Ramioacas Gy een ame 4 a te ee Se, ,? Al ; ‘ee 3 sl yore Back row, L. to R: S. Naito, T. Zeiler, A. Rodriquez, J. The idea of the program was to let only the students who wanted to see the program see it. Unfortunatly the idea didn’t work too well. Many of the students who wanted to see the program didn't get tickets and many of the students who got tickets abused the privilege to see the program. The talent in the program was quite varied. The program included the Madera High School Dance Band, ACappella, majorettes, letter girls, and flag team. Roger Foronda, Cheryl Haynes, Betty Gotelli, and Larry Ortiz also performed. The talent was good - it’s just too bad that only half of the student body was able to see this year’s “Christmas Program”. It is not easy for a young man to be a member of a losing team and still put out 100% effort. But the Coyotes did just that. Many times they were down, but they always battled back. In late August, over 50 boys reported for pre-season practice. There were only 32 players suited up for the last game. The Coyotes lost six starters due to injuries and also lost some boys who did not want to pay the price to be a member of the ball club. Those who stay will be champions not only on the football field but in life itself. As for the boys who dropped out because the going was too tough, who can remember their names? The 1971 Coyotes were primarily an underclassman team. The senior players provided the leadership necessary to help the many young players become adjusted to the varsity level of competition. Three members of the ball club were selected to the All- NYL Team. Senior linebacker Cortez Robinson, senior guard Ron Medlin, and junior defensive back Ken Jones made the second team. Several other Coyotes received Honorable Mention. The Madera High football players have shown that they can move the ball against anyone. And with the many returning lettermen who have as much pride and determination as they do, the 1972 Coyotes will definitely be a team that will be heard from. 116 Above: Louie Razo and Paul Gamboa in pursuit of the Hoover quarterback in the last football game of the 1971 season. We opened against Merced, an exceptional frosh team, and we were beaten decisively. A lot of fellows learned why football is called the gladiator sport, but they learned from the hard play. Our second game with another Merced team was back and forth with the defense doing a good job until three mistakes in the last quarter, and we lost 0-6. Against Sierra these young men joined together in a real team effort. They came from behind 0-12. In the 2nd half to win 14-12. The offense started to roll. Our last, a return match with Sierra, was a culmination of progress of this team. The defense played rough, solid football, while the offensive team moved the ball behind the best blocking of the season. This group of young Coyotes should make a good mark next year as sophomore when they join up their effort with their classmates who played on the sophomore team. The highlight of the season came when Madera defeated Selma in the Sanger tournament. There were many ups and downs throughout the season. The Coyotes were led by the scoring and rebounding of Captain Darrell Smith and the steady play of Ken Jones. Mike Say came on strong at mid-season, and contributed very much the rest of the bs way. Fresno State College, M.A. Seniors, now that your high school career has come to an end, it is my hope that you can look back on your past four years with a feeling of accomplishment and success. Your reflections will include fond memories of happy times, close and permanent friendships, outstanding teachers, meaningful projects, and the development of confidence, pride, responsibility, and self discipline. Your education must not stop here, regardless of whether or not you move on to a higher lever of formal schooling. You must continue to challenge your mind and to relentlessly seek knowledge. From this knowledge you will develop insight into the vast problems that will face you, and from this insight will come solutions to those problems. Your education must never cease. In fact, it now has only a good beginning. It has been great to have you at Madera High School and | want to wish each of you success and happiness in the years ahead. ROBERT H. Above: Chopsticks on the papercutter Above: That's not the way | heard it, wench. 223 Above: Mmmmmmmm good Above: Where should | put this one? In early June we all sit back and anticipate two major events: the ending of the long school year and the distribution of the BLUE WHITE. As students browse through the newly arrived books, they see a myriad of photographs that will indelibly recall the 1971- 1972 school year in future years; but for the ten members of this year’s annual staff, they will view the finished product as many hours of sketching layouts, editing copy, eliminating ten photographs for each one they select, selling advertising to help pay the $10,000 yearbook company bill, and staying up till 12:30 a.m. on Fridays before the deadlines to make sure the yearbook arrives before school lets out for summer vacation. Each year | tell my annual staff that theirs will be the finest annual ever produced at Madera High, and, so far, so far ... At any rate, ALL the credit must go to the staff: to Lori Niino and Mary Schwarz for an outstanding job on the senior and Kolor Power sections; to Debbie Carpenter, Dave Niino, and Jerry Marsh for their long hours on the sports section; to Karen Stapleton, Pete Townsend, and Victor Nash for selling the most advertising in Madera High history; to Karen Radley who made sure all clubs received at least one full page this year; to the three “W's”, Jerrianne Carey, Carol McClure, and Terri Taylor who edited the underclassmen sections and who will never eat alphabet soup again; and to Paul Yates and Dave Niino for some imaginative photography and a lot of patience.
