Facing insurmountable odds, a determined community raised the necessary funds to begin the athletic program at Madera High School. With these funds, football practice began as usual in August under the capable supervision of Coach Tom Crow and his two well-qualified assistants, Jim Harper and Dave Parsons. Confident in the community's support and anxious to make the varsity team, fifty-five students reported for the first day of practice. This large turnout proved the desire of the students to make their varsity football team the best possible. Throughout the season the players upheld the Coyote tradition by fighting through the last game. The community, along with the student body, admired the unyielding spirit displayed by the Coyotes in every game. The Coyotes first encounter was with Dos Palos. Although the Coyotes were defeated, they exemplified the courage and tenacity that enabled them to crush the Roosevelt Rough Riders. The Homecoming game with Edison was played under the most adverse conditions. In spite of the cold, falling rain, it was a comeback game all the way. During the last twenty seconds the spectators emptied the bleachers and stood packed around the field. The Coyotes charged the Tigers and carried the ball to the two yard line where they lost it to their opponent. In every game all of the players performed to the best of their ability. Outstanding contributions to the varsity’s determination to prove worthy of the school’s and community's support were made by David Brown, Randy Rowe, Bill Manos, and Brad Hatch—all named to the NYL second team. Also, Cortez Hill, Jeff Johnson, and Phil Griffin, received honorable mention for NYL. With an eye toward the future, Coach Crow sees among the Frosh-Soph teams players who will qualify for the rugged standards expected of next year’s varsity. — 6 at “ ( It : ‘ } a , a8 a ? However, the team was hampered slightly because several outstanding sophomore players made the varsity. This situation provided opportunities for several sophomore players to gain field experience. Under the superior coaching of Mentors Powell and Provencio, who practiced platooning, many sophomores received experience required of future varsity players. Those contributing to the success of the squad were running backs Paul Gamboa and Mark Pitts. During the season a beautiful performance was turned in by Fred Thomas with his pass receptions. Leading blockers, Mario Manrique and Mike Say, continued to prove their ability in every game. Other linemen who developed a great deal were John Badorine and Ron Scroggins. The pass defense, consisting of Louie Raza, Norman Breazell, Steve Chavira and Darrell Smith, gave up no touchdown passes as they met their opponents play by play. Additional defensive standouts were Winton McGhee, Marcello Ibarra and Brooks Whitehead. Both sophomore coaches, Powell and Provinceo, agree that once this class is reunited next year on the varsity they will be a powerful force to contend with. 121 PR RE ORE REN RCT SRNR Head Coach, Stan Bledsoe a9 53 4 Vics a _ SS ‘ali mf a4 :°3 6 Ass't Coach, Michael Davis 3 60 90°70 FRESHMEN FOOTBALL—THIRD ROW, Left to Right: John Tipton, Tom DaSilva, Leneard Hobbs, David Rivera, George Tamberi, Randy Cheuvront, Mike Hays, David Galleano, Mark Marklund. The stone cutter must take raw material, cut it, shape it, and apply the necessary skill to polish the stone. The freshman football coach faces similar tasks. He shapes young men into rugged football players by instrucing them in the fundamentals of passing, running, blocking and conditioning. By instilling in their players football knowledge and ‘‘Madera pride”, Coaches Stan Bledsoe and Michael Davis have accomplished the tasks of the stone cutter Except for light scrimmage with the frosh-soph team, Madera’s ballplayers had o real game experience prior to the outing in their opening contest with Lemoore. The freshmen lost 54-0 The following week, the Pups corrected their mistakes and began to build momentum for their homecoming tilt with Sierra. Their enthusiasm, along with their skill, enabled them to defeat the Chieftains, 18-6. The freshmen team continued to build up strength as they defeated Central and Dos Palos. Losing to Merced brought the Pups record to three wins and two losses Offensively, the backs shined for the Pups. Ed Martinez, fullback, Leon Biscay, Halfback, and Mark Root, quarterback, turned in consistent performances all year. David Ranirez, the offensive center earned high praise from his coaches for his hard nose play. Defensively, the Pups had a fine set of linebackers in Randy Cheuvront, Richard Ayala, and Oscar Olguin, who provided the bulk of the defense. VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY. Through his struggle to outrun his opponents, he experiences the joy of winning and the crushing blow of defeat. Madera’s Varsity Cross Country team entered this year’s running season with great expectations. With the courageous running of Dave Blalock, Raul Aleman, Rick Jensen and Larry Echols, the harriers battled and fought their way forward trying to clear a path for the first place position. But their opponents, proving to be a stronger force than was expected, pushed Madera’s Varsity into seventh place. Going into the League the Frosh-Soph Cross Country team rated number two; whereas, their leading foe, Fresno, rated number one. With the hard running of Modesto Yslas, Lewis Raviscioni, Paul Carranza and Paul Mendez, Madera showed their strength and determination to win by moving in to take the N.Y.L. title. Divisional competition proved to be an even greater challenge for Madera’s hard pushing team. Wanting to stay on top, the Frosh-Soph runners captured the Divisional. The thin clads’ next step was to face the top running teams of the valley. With a powerful willingness to be the Valley Champions, the Freshmen- Sophomores wound up an exciting year by winning the Valley Meet. About twenty-two anxious and high-spirited students composed the Junior Varsity Cross Country team this year. This number was a good sign because the JV team is where the knowledge and eblerience is acquired in the art of long distance running. Dave Blalock, all N.Y.L The Junior Varsity Cross Country, like the Varsity, unable to outrun the humiliation of defeat, were forced into taking fifth place in the League. In their final test of power-the Divisional Contest-the JVs managed to come together and by doing so placed third. 124 FROSH-SOPH TAKES LEAGUE, DIVISIONAL AND VALLEY CHAMPIONSHIPS AS] Ped inet oe od Wilke FROSH-SOPH CROSS COUNTRY. They strive for unity, for without it, their dreams and hopes will never take shape. One of the bright spots on the Varsity basketball team this year was Walter Clark. Walter proved himself to be our main offensive threat and he also showed his skill on defense. Being the team’s leading scorer, he always made a game with Madera tough. Another steady performer for the roundballers was Richard Redwine. Richard did a terrific job at rebounding throughout the season and often his enthusiasm helped ignite the team to victory. A capable player, Richard was a main cog in the line-up. Getting off to a slow start, Dennis Vaughn came back with well played games Dennis was an extremely quick guard who was valuable on both offense and defense. He was always getting his share of points and rebounds The center for the “70 - 71 team was Vonel Chambers. Although Vonel often played opposite bigger men, he played an aggressive game at all times and was always jumping Jack Bellinger, a tall junior, was another Coyote standout on offense. His specialty was hitting from the corner even though he was up against taller men. Playing defense and rebounding with the best of them was senior Jerry Payne. Ken Evans, who became eligible after five League games, provided the Coyotes with much needed bench strength. With Varsity experience last year, Kenny turned out to be a real hustler The unsung heroes, the reserves, are just as important as the starters because they may be sent in at any minute with the responsibility of completing a job. The starters must be on their toes at all times knowing that they can be replaced at any time by a willing and ready reserve. Two of the four reserves were seniors Ken Tigson and Sidney Lee. These men showed real desire once they got on the court. Reserves Don Ervin, a junior, and Charles Parker, a sophomore, will be one step ahead of their competition, thanks to some Varsity experience. , Dennis Vaughn, Ken Tigson, Jackie Bellinger, Vonel Chambers, Don Ervin, Sidney Lee, Ken JV BASKETBALL eee} JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL— STANDING, Left to Right: Neville Bowen, Cortez Robinson, Mike Say, Darrell Smith, Bob Mellenbacker, David Brown, Fred Thomas, John Badorine, Curtis Allen, Coach Stan Bledsoe. Like the JV team, the Varsity had a League record of 14 wins and 1 loss. They met stiff opposition, however, in the Division and Valley contests and were forced into a position of second place in both matches. All of these athletes ended their season with magnificent overall scores. Pete King and Brad Hatch were on top with the most wins. Being the Captain, Brad Hatch encouraged his team to work harder by being the high point man. Most improved was William Bloodworth. The outstanding wrestler was Pete King. Our wrestlers have worked long, tedious hours to put together the most powerful wrestling machine ever experienced in the hostory of Madera High School. With an impressive League record of 14 wins and 1 loss, the JV squad took the Championship by a wide margin. Highlighting this year’s season with the most wins was J. Imrie, Jim Burciaga and Jim Savala. J. Imrie was the high point man on the team, too. Fred Daniels and John Rios came up with an undefeated season. Keeping the team together was Captain, Lee Spotts. J. Imrie was voted the outstanding wrestler. FRONT ROW, Left to Right: Mark Root, Mike Carter, Brent Peart. George Tamberi hits a long drive GOLF David Holmes For Coach Ken Montgomery's 1971 Varsity and JV Golf teams it was a year of experimentation and rebuilding. Staffed mostly with Freshmen, the Varsity Golf squad faced stiff opposition against the more experienced Fresno teams, especially when called upon to play on courses completely unfamiliar to the members new to competition golf. The golf season, however, was not without its lighter moments. David Holmes, playing against Fresno High, hit three consecutive shots out-of-bounds and took a 16 on a par 3 hole. In the same match, freshman George Tamberi, playing first man against his wishes, sent a straight drive five yards down the fairway—on his practice swing. It was THAT kind of a season. Next year, with more experience, the Coyote squad should again be strong NYL contenders. Rick McAlister, Patrick Eaton and Patti Chavin won the three Valley Diving Championships last year, so they returned as Seniors to boost the diving team to many victories A diver, unlike many other athletes, is all alone in his competition. Therefore, to be in top shape, our divers were in constant competition with each other. Patrick Eaton was Rick's main competitor for the championship in the Varsity boys’ division. Fo r the girls’ championship Patti Chavin’s chief challenger was Michele McGinnis. Striving to maintain Madera’s dominance in the B-boys’ division was Jeffery Eaton. These three divers: Patrick, Rick and Jeffery provided the backbone for the boys’ division of the diving team this year Although Pat and Rick will not return to dive next year Jeff Eaton will be returning to give the team necessary diving skill. The Madera girls, who strove for the championship this year, will also be aiming for the championship in their division next year. Last year the Varsity baseballers finished League competition with seven wins and fourteen losses, this being the highest score they've had in years. The 1971 team was made up of fourteen seniors. This meant that the entire infield and practically all of the pitching staff was seniors. Being seniors meant that these young men had been working together four long and hard years. They had experience and experience was the key factor to the team’s success. Every opposing team that had to face Madera’s tough baseball players knew that it would be a rough game, one in which Madera would not give up easily. coe eo eS nn Ronnie Graham, third base pADeR, ay a Mike Burns, second base A l¢ Dave Morin, catcher Kenny Evans, center field Marty Cargill, shortstop.
