Text from Pages 1 - 216 of the 1970 volume:

Nova EXOROIUM a new beginning. For us it represents the gateway to the realization of an ideal, a hope, a dream perhaps, of something new and better for ourselves and mankind. Astrologically we are beginning the age of Aquar- ius, in which events as important as those at the beginning of Pisces (when people like Christ were born) are likely to occur. We hope that in this new age man will at last reach the epitome of civiliza- tion and learn to live in peace, much more diffi- cult than resting in peace, with his fellow man. We, the seniors of Madera High, are facing a new beginning also. We hope that this, our nova exor- dium, will inspire each of us to pursue his individ- ual goals with a new optimism and a new dedi- cation. As members of this generation, we are part of a new attitude toward all aspects of society, includ- ing authority, tradition and morality. This new at- titude is preached vociferously by those of the so- called drug culture, but its scope of influence is much broader. It indicates a general feeling of dis- enchantment characteristic of today’s youth. But possibly there is also a miracle to be found in our somewhat foggy ideas. For in our disregard for the apathy and skepticism of the old generation, we have seized on a new neo-romantic spirit. We have great and far-reaching hopes for improving society. We are questioning, perhaps more than any other generation before us, the validity of worn-out values and antiquated tradition. Our anti-mate- rialistic ideas are perhaps too easily dismissed as being too impractical. We don’t claim to have invented anything new, but we feel we are rejuvenating the somewhat for- gotten subjects of love, amazement, and jubilation. It is said our attitude is a by-product of the af- fluent society we grew up in. (“You don’t know what hard times are. When I was your age. . .”) It is called unhealthy, unrealistic, impractical, immoral, a Communist plot. Some say it will destroy us, some say save us. Some say it will fade away, some say it will rule future lives. Some are thrilled by it, some horrified. And so, youth is, in itself, a controversial issue. You may, dear mothers and fathers, condemn _ us for what we are. But don’t condemn us for what we aspire to be. Our greatness lies in the future, and this is our nova exordium. Knowledge is an ingredient essential to the realization of these goals. The search for knowledge must not end with graduation. Instead, that search must continue throughout life. Formal education lays the foundations and provides the impetus to continued learning. Self-discipline is another necessity in the struggle for success and happiness. Shouldering responsibilities, facing life’s problems, and having the necessary perseverance to achieve desired goals are all directly related to the ability to discipline oneself. MRS. R. ACKERMAN MISS C. ADAMS MATH Success and happiness are also dependent upon our abili- PHYSICAL ED. ties to respect our fellow man, even though we may not share his views or convictions. It is my hope that your years at Madera High School have provided you with the basics to achieve these goals. The rest is up to you. The road ahead will sometimes be rocky, but with knowl- edge, self-discipline, and respect for others, you will have an excellent chance to be both successful and happy. ROBERT H. WA Ae: WW Sy, Jon Mari Judi! Judi! Judi! I looked out over what I could see of the world and I closed my eyes to nothing. I saw people dying, even starving, people unloved and unloving, forgotten and forgetting, lost and losing. I saw man killing man with faces looking on and saying nothing, their silence called patriotism while the cries and shouts of others were carefully ignored. I saw the shocks of hospitals jails wars ghettos army training camps city streets and even libraries full of tears and the most hopeful full of fears. I saw man’s great machines with bared waiting jaws and he with no place to run from what he built in that same anxious passion that (it was whispered) would destroy him because perhaps his greed was even greater than his hate. I saw hungry, pleading eyes, eyes empty of the hope that comes only from the knowledge of a life that can hold something besides misery and dying, and dying, and death. I saw my greatest hope, my generation sitting quietly in rows unseeing unfeeling dismissing anger joy passion love pretending not to know growing old comfortably, while those who wouldn’t fit refused to sit let their minds be wasted in stoned immunity their search for individualism and meaning yielding only conformity and meaninglessness, their shedding of values leaving them naked and shivering in their desperate need so that in the spaces between the thrills and pills they though of ultimate escape no longer immune, hopelessly succeptable. I saw obscenities scratched into grade-school lunch benches, smack king hero in in red on tennis shoes. I saw people miserable in marriages and other institutions who had long ceased talking of escape, having realized long ago that they had nowhere else to go and sometimes there were children to think about and hold responsible. I saw people passionately hating their life and desperately fearing their death, their future ceasing to exist in the eternity of their present. I saw people without hope. I saw me. I looked out over what I could see of the world and I closed my eyes to nothing. The world lay before me in hideous shades of dark and grey and I could see no sense or reason in all the terrible struggle. But then the sun burst forth born once again of darkness and spread slender fingers of color over the land touching, blessing everything and I, I forgot my search for reason and found one after all in the sun, the crazy sun smilin’ in spite of everything and me shinin’. 53 Nomecoming Week the 1969 Queen Ano CouRt Activities for Homecoming Week were launched by the naming of the four candidates for Home- coming Queen; Carol Loquaci, Dianna Tabor, Janie Logoluso, and Paula Galleano. That Mon- day night, Block M held its annual toy drive, collecting toys for needy children. Tuesday night saw the Boy-Girl football game held at Rotary Park. After the girls won, the crowd went to celebrate at Baskin-Robins. Throughout the week each class and different clubs were finishing their decorated cars. On Friday a panel of judges named Y.A.C. as the winning car. There was also an after-school rally held at Bethard Square. That night, the four candidates made their walk down the field with the Band playing on either side. At the end of the walk Block M president, Charles Freeman presented the traditional roses to Homecoming Queen Paula Galleano. After the game at the Block M Dance, the Queen was crowned and all candidates received gifts. Sponsored by the Girls’ League, it was held on November 1, 1969, in the girls’ gym. Coffins, headstones and all types of spooky decorations added to the eerie atmosphere of the dance. Prizes went to Cindy Mc- Mains and Terry Jay for the best cos- tumes. Music for the evening was pro- vided by the “Soul Dynamics.” Nancy Prosperi, Girls’ League President } FrRosh-Soph Reception To MHS — This year’s 1969 Frosh-Soph Reception was one of the most outstanding achievements the Class of °72 ever accomplished. The success was due mainly to the hard-working chairmen in coopera- tion with the class officers and advisors. Besides getting their committee together and dec- orating, the chairmen also had the responsibility of earning money by bake sales and selling raffle tickets. Around 300 Freshmen and Sophomores attended the reception. The Albert Witch Affair played exceptionally well, the refreshments were deli- cious, the decorations were fantastically grotesque, and everyone, including the chaperones, had a real “ghoul” time. Anita Meister, Sophomore Class President Class of ‘70 Junior-SEenioR Prom “Palace of the Gods” was the theme for probably the best Junior-Senior Prom in the history of Madera High. A theme of ancient Greece and the gods that ruled carried out the setting for the formal affair. At intermission, Miss Diane Prosperi—es- corted by Mr. Mike Cappelluti — was crowned Queen of the 1969 Junior-Senior Prom. Music for the Prom was ably pro- vided by Jerry Venturi’s Band. Paula Galleano, junior class president, did an outstanding job of organizing all of those “energetic” last year juniors to cre- ate the best prom ever. Dan Milinovich =S christmas Ball The theme for this years’ Christmas Ball was “An Old Fashioned Christmas.” Each table had a centerpiece of a pine cone that had a red or white candle near it that was tied with a red bow. From the ceiling there hung a large silver ball that had four garlands coming from it to each corner of the gym. There was a fireplace, and two large Christmas trees that had lights from top to bottom. The money was used for our Senior Horizon trip to Los Angeles in the spring. Music was provided by the Forth Oncome. Susan Herring Senior Horizon President 1970 SENIOR f; tise) Senior play cast Sylvia Barrett ............. The play was “Up the Down Staircase,” with a cast of 30 characters, plus all the behind- the-scene crews. With Mrs. Oswald’s mighty fist of encourage- ment, the members of Madera High Actors Union, gave up jobs, sleep, boyfriends, girl- friends, food, and flunked Civics so the Senior Play could be a successful one. Mrs. Oswald often used the cliche “Break a leg,” Linda Arthur took it literally and did just that. Summing up the many weeks of rehearsals, we worked hard and were not dis- appointed with the profits! Diane Eller Assistant Director Bette “Yodi” Goodwin Diane “Moki” Eller We were chosen as Madera High School Mas- cots by the fall Student Council of 1968, and were the first to make the job more meaningful. Starting out in our spanking new coyote suits and new coyote heads fashioned by Kim Neely, it was hard to distinguish between us. Moki, Diane, tied a bow on her tail, and was the shortest. Yodi, Bette, tied two knots in her tail and was taller. Some of the highlights of the two years were when we went trick-or-treating and handed out the goodies at the 68 Homecoming game, times that we played football, Moki in her football shirt and Yodi in her football shoes. Best of all was when we entered a float in the 69 Home- coming and won a third place. We've done our best as mascots and think that we added a little to school spirit. We hope that the privilege of being the coyotes will be given to some deserving characters next year. Moki and Yodi Ox ; ae ooo taWas aN X 4 A GwWa oN wre. OO. It soon became apparent to me that if any work was to be done, it would have to be accomplished by a team effort. The members of the 1969-70 Fall Student Council gave forth this effort wholeheartedly. Madera High has always had many problems facing it, but thanks to incentive in the Student body, faculty, and administration, the problems have been tackled. In the future, no matter what problems the high school faces, I hope the stu- dents take the incentive and have pride in their school and look for solutions to their problems. I now look back on my term of office as the most enjoyable time of my four short years at Madera High and I sincerely hope that the students will always, as they did this year, strive for a better Madera High School. Barry Bedwell Fall Student Body President As Student Body president for the second semes- ter, I have had the opportunity to attempt to change programs that I felt could be improved. This has been an experience that I will never forget. I cannot say that this has been a very easy semester, or always enjoyable. At times I wanted to resign, but at others it has been very rewarding. The office of Student Body President has de- manded much more time and effort than I had expected and it caused a great deal of conflict with my other activities. The experience I gained from the term was all worth while. I would like to take this oppor- tunity to thank all of the students at Madera High for giving me this chance to work for them. BOYS’ State GOVERNOR'S sState- house conference n.y.L. SECRETARY My stay at Boy’s State was not as worth while as I expected it to be. The facilities in which we stayed were said to have been better than the years before, but this is a matter of opinion, The main function of Boys’ State was to inform us of the different levels and classifications of our gov- ernmental bureaucracy, and to teach us the system of American Govern- ment. In this mode, Boy’s State was worthwhile and achieved its purpose. I feel this organization could be ameliorated if more funds were pro- vited for recreation and better living facilities. Steve Gamboa Boy’s State representative The 1969 Governor’s State House Conference held in Sacramento on November 10 and 11 was an outcome of the youth conferences organized throughout the cities of California. The theme was to discuss the problems of the young genera- tion in the new decade of the seventies. It was a challenge for action and change. Never before had I seen so many adults and young people get together to talk about the dilem- mas confronting both generations in these times of turmoil. The issues discussed scaled from mass media to discrimination, from sex to education, and from war to drugs. The results were not as positive as one would have hoped for, but the experiences gained were left in the minds of the young and the old to regenerate a new attitude. Perhaps a solution won’t be formulated, but we young people and adults, through our reflected despairs, are concerned with the hardships and tragedies of the world and hope to acquire a new transformation for a better understanding. Gerald Harris Conference Representative I think that getting involved in NYL gives a person an even greater know- ledge of student government. You’re working with new people, people that you don’t know personally, instead of your close friends and those you’ye known all your life. The purpose of NYL is to better school relations and to solve school problems, but during the year, we decided that one meeting a month was more than enough. At that time, NYL was completely dissolved and we formed a new one which will still accomplish the goals of NYL but with fewer meetings. I have enjoyed my year in NYL very much. I have learned a great deal about student government and I have made many new friends. School plays a big part in whether my year in the United States has been a success and something that I can look back on with won- derful memories; and I can honestly say that it has been everything that could have been hoped for, and more I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my family, the Gills for being so wonderful and helping me throughout my year. I have gained a real insight into the American way of life and I hope in turn that many of you have learned a little about my homeland, New Zealand. Perhaps one of my most important impressions that I will return to New Zealand with is that people are basically the same, no matter what country. The Coyotes had a record of 1 win and 9 losses and has everybody praying Chowchilla will have a football team next year. But, success is not always decided by the record of a team’s victory and defeats. In the case of our Coyotes, it was graded by the desire, the hustle, and the hitting. And the grade comes up a big A. The Coyotes were nearly always out- manned, outweighed, and outclassed. But the size of their hearts was as big as any. It’s hard for a team to keep going after losing many games — and the games seemed endless. But the Coyotes were held together through a spirit of good coaching, good fo a ae is De a P. Kirby, K. Truhitte also was selected as a member of the City-County All-Star football team. This proves the Coyotes had some good ts. senior material and that the juniors who played along with them will be some he of the best players Madera has seen in quite a few years. i as The team knew how hard the coaches worked at fielding a team and respected he them for their courage throughout the season. The football program is in re- building and the Coyotes may soon return to prominence in the North Yosemite League — and sooner than some fans may think. For the Chinese, 1970 may be the year of the Dog, but for the Madera High sports fans, it is the year of the wrestlers. These young men are probably the most devoted, well trained and self-disciplined ath- letes in Madera High history. They deserve a lot of credit for their hard tedious work. But their coach, Al Kiddy, also deserves accolades for his powers not only in the NYL, but in the entire Central Valley. Again this year, his wrestlers took first prize in Valley wrestling finals. Four grapplers took first place. The new Valley Champions this year are Pete King, Charlie Freeman, Dan DaSilva and Brad Hatch. Everyone of the wrestlers started at the beginning just like everyone does in anything. But because of their diligence, their outright guts, they went to the top. If athletics teaches you about life, these young men will be best in whatever they do. It is a shame, though probably a great relief to Fresno grapplers, that Madera will drop out of the NYL and athletics altogether. It took a long time to build this fantastic machine and it is a “miscarriage of justice” to see it end. Varsity WRESTLING Dennis Katuin works for commanding position. They helped strengthen our swim team and had hopes for a NYL Championship. } The girls team, though small, hoped to do a good job. In the past, Madera had been lacking the power, to do any damage in the North Yosemite League. This was again the problem this year, but everybody was hoping the bats will be making more noise than they have in the past. The pitching is strong perhaps the strongest in the league. The situation is good in one respect, there were few or no private feuds among the ball players. They think as a team. They have fun when they play because they enjoy play- ing with their teammates, There is respect for the coach, as well as a coach he is a human being. And anyway, it’s not whether you win or, lose, it’s whether you get to play or not. Coach Jim Harper. 144 Wally Clark yy ymca harlie James JV BaseBall Front Row,: Left to right, Mgr. R. Leroy, N. PUBLIC ATIONS the maderan The Maderan staff attempted to provide an in- formative and entertaining campus newspaper. The changes made from last year’s paper were meant to make the Maderan better. The Maderan was published bi-weekly by a staff which consisted of twenty-five Journalism II stu- dents, with the aid of Mrs. Norma Jantzen, journalism adviser. Typography was done at Rudy Printing Company, with pictures being prepared for publication by Madera Daily Tribune. Journalism I students studied the basics of journal- ism and contributed copy for the paper during the last semester of school. Other students helped with the Maderan by providing cartoons, guest editorials and additional copy and information. It was the hope of the editors to put into practice some of the ideas they learned at a journalism seminar at Fresno State College the previous sum- mer. Some of these changes were the abolishment of stories or items detrimental to personal reputa- tions, as well as column rules. There was also the introduction of a new nameplate, an informative column (For Your Information), and other inno- vations. The Maderan was rated by the San Joaquin Val- ley Scholastic Press Association, which holds an annual spring press conference at Fresno State College. It received a rating of Superior, which means, in the opinion of the judges provided by the SJVSPA and the Journalism Department at Fresno State College, that the staff at Madera High School produced “an outstanding publica- tion.” The Maderan was also rated by the Na- tional Scholastic Press Association and the Co- lumbia Scholastic Press Association. It is hoped that in the future years the Maderan will become more instrumental in the activities of a larger group of students at Madera High School. It is also hoped that more students will become interested in journalism and that the stu- dent body as a whole will become more involved in their newspaper. We know there are many in this school who were never a cheerleader or a foot- ball player and who, when they open their yearbook years from now, will not feel as if they were a significant part of the school because they were not involved in all the various activities. We hoped to reach some of these people, particularly, in our pages devoted to creative photography, poetry, and miscellaneous thoughts, for it is possible to depict in art ineffable ideas which we acknowledge and which we spontaneously feel without aid or intrusion of understanding, but also thoughts and feelings we had. Perhaps someday it will make us think of the answers life has given us since our years in high school. Above all, we meant to show high school as a period of our lives, not just an excuse for football games and dances. We meant to show students, not just student activities. We meant to be sincere. May our book be as great as our hopes for it. The editors heartily thank John and Lex and Michele and Linda and Pablo and Paula and Lynn and Sally and Nave and John B. and Tom and Grant and Gugie and Riviera and Michael and Dudley and Sam and Phil and Theresa and Mark, the illustrious staff who made the book a reality—Much to everyone’s surprise. Many thanks also to Mr. Stanley who kept things moving in the right direction and Mrs. Jantzen who kept them from flying away. Still more thank yous for those who bought ads and boosters, even happily, and those whose salesmanship abilities were responsible.
