Andrew Latham Smith S ae Garden Grandeur,’ presented by the Class of 1969 proved to be the best Prom ever. For many months previous to the event the Junior class labored on decora- tions and various other effects. Huge brightly adorned 12 foot flowers covered [ the walls and an oversized ladybug served q as a refreshment table. Also a mechanical 2 butterfly with a wing span of 6 feet hung | from the ceiling. With music provided by The Showmen, May 10, 1968 proved to be a night to remember. “Garden Grandeur’ Queen Cinda Allison and her attendants Cathy Lesan, left and Irene Lopez, right. Couples enjoying music by The Showmen. Entering couples announced by Dianna Tabor and Mitchell Rigby. La 3 $ Large silver gates greeted guests ar- riving at Zenith Horizon's Christmas Ball, ‘Heavenly Christmas.’ The girls worked extremely hard to make the dance a success. In the center of the floor stood a pink Christmas tree and the walls were decorated with angels. Couples danced to the music of Penny Candy. “Heavenly Christmas” President Alice Venturi, Jeanne Spencer, and Buddy Wilburn prepare some decorations for the dance. Japanese Tea Garden’ was the theme of this year's Frosh-Soph Reception, put on by the class of 1971. They carried the theme out by hanging Japanese lanterns and by decorating the bandstand with a massive recreation of a Buddha. The eve- ning proved to be a success enjoyed by all who attended. You're working for and representing eight of the largest schools in Central California, the schools comprising the NYL. The executive council began its effort last spring and con- tinued through last summer. Last fall we began our term with an introductory picnic at Hoover which has served to facilitate the cooperation and better understanding among the league schools. It has launched itself into projects re- garding its history, class curriculum, and drug education. NYL gives a person a chance to develop inter-school rela- tions, while fostering better intra-school relations through understanding and awareness of school problems. 3b Jape Uergh ONG Boys’ State Steve Loquaci Boy's State Week was one of my most memorable experi- ences during my high school career. At Boy's State | learned a great deal about the way government operates. | think my greatest reward was gaining the respect and friendship of the members of Boy's State. A total of 850 boys from throughout California attended Boy's State at Sacramento and every participant gained some satisfac- tion for his involvement in the activities during the week. Every two weeks dur- ing the spring semester the Teen-Age Voice page was published in the Ma- dera News Tribune. This gave the students of Madera High the opportunity to express their views and ideas to the community. It gave the community a chance to know what the students were thinking and doing. -” Left to Right: Miss Dominici, Advisor; Thomas Kidwell, Paula Galleano, Karen Woodall, Muriel Walker. ferie 80 | bie inet oi First Row (left to right): J. Coach Rohrke Coach Adams Madera's 1968 football team seemed to most a failure, but to those who measure success by the true meaning of the word, it was a success- ful year. The Coyotes started the season with a group of anxious seniors, and inexperienced jun- iors. After two weeks of hard practice under Head Coach Bob Warner the Coyotes took on Redwood High School in a scrimmage. Despite several mistakes, Madera rolled by the Visalia team, and looked forward to their first game with formidable Dos Palos, rated No. | in the valley. With tough running arl Austin to carry the mail, the Broncos penetrated the Madera defense to score six touchdowns, while the Coy- Most Valuable Player, Steve Imrie, dives for the goal line as Dave Rubio, 83, blocks, and Williams, 14, watches. ° Mark Williams, 81, leads Al Smith, 32, around end. otes hampered by fumbles and interceptions, went scoreless. Standouts of the game were Dan Johnson, Steve Imrie, and Al Smith. Final score: 37 to 0. Although Friday's game was rough, Monday's aes was even tougher. The team worked ard toward their game with Taft. With only the partial service of injured Steve Imrie, the Coy- otes played a hard, close game, highlighted by a 60-yard pass-run by David Rubio. With the score, Taft 26, Madera 20, the Coyotes drove toward the goal line, but fumbled on the 5- yard mark and thus the game ended. The next week Madera played the Tigers of Edi- son High School. The fabulous play of the game was a reverse pass from Steve Loquaci to Paul Wil- liams who scored twice. A fumble on a late fourth quarter drive ended the game in favor of Edison 26-20. Steve Irtrie played a great game, also, Against their county rival, Chowchilla, Madera played good, hard football, and ended up scalp- ing the Redskins 34 to 13. The defense was sparked by an interception by Al Smith, and the hard hitting of Joe Pettit and Steve Loquaci. A strong aerial attack, with passes from Paul Wil- liams to Mark Williams and Rod Earls, moved the ball for the Coyotes. The game proved cost- ly in that Madera lost guard Steve Loquaci when he broke his arm in the second quarter. Madera's first road game was with the league leading Fresno High Warriors. The Coyotes were overpowered by a quicker offense and a stronger defense, but the underdog Coyotes never gave up, playing hard until the gun sound- ed. It was a question of speed and referees in the tilt between Madera and the Hoover Patriots. Several 'misjudged'’ penalties were called Cowboy Dan Johnson bulldogs a Taft runner. Dennis Badorine, 33, hauls in a short one. against Madera and a Coyote touchdown was called back as well. This broke the Coyotes’ morale, leaving the game wide open for Hoo- ver, who won 20 to 9. Outstanding players were ane Williams, Valenzuela, Smith, Jacobs, and Earls. It was a luckless night for Madera on their home- grounds, as the Scots of McLane outscored them 64 to 13. McLane, led by Dave Wiggins, played their finest game against the Coyotes, cred it showed. Bruce Deaver and Steve Imrie scored Madera's only two touchdowns. Stand- outs were Johnson, Rubio, Imrie, Deaver, and Roger Williams. Madera's Homecoming was spoiled by a Clo- vis comeback in the final quarter of the game. The Coyotes led 25-7 entering the fourth quar- ter. It was a hard-hitting, highly spirited, and tough to lose game for the Coyotes. The Bullard-Madera game was a tragedy. The field was wet and muddy, but the game went on, in Bullard's favor. Madera fought hard, and showed a strong first half. Stalwarts were, Dan De Silva, Larry Southall, and Mark Williams. Hampered by a poor running and punting game, Madera dropped their final game of the sea- son to Roosevelt. Mark Williams, 81, waits for a floater from cousin Paul. 1297 Frosh-Soph Football EE First Row (left to right): P. Soto, M. Johnson, V. Macias, O. Flores, R. Aoki, Coach Vickers, J. Copeland, D.
