The im- mediate discussion centered around school spirit. Later on in the fall, the first “Winter Sports Assembly” was held to acquaint the student body with our basketball and wrestling teams. The “Coyote Club” was also started last fall to pro- vide a service to the community by allowing those people 65 years or older free admission into all MHS athletic events. Revision of our old and outmoded school constitution was authorized by Student Council last fall and the new consti- tution is a much more workable document than the former one. One of the prime concerns of many students this past fall was the formation of a temporary student court on campus. The court provided a solution for many problems concern- ing the school during its presence on the campus. STUDENT ¢ aie HHH Re f° { Spring President Ken Sellai I feel very fortunate to have worked with a Student Coun- cil who was never at a loss for initiative. I could always count on this group, with the support of the student body, to promote action when the need arose. Of course, not everything that was tried succeeded but I felt an inner sat- isfaction for the mere act of trying. In looking back over my administration, I sincerely regret my failures, but I would feel an even deeper sense of dis- appointment if they were not acted upon again in the fu- ture. The realization of different programs on campus such as the Student Mall, which is one of the most outstanding, is a tribute to students who not only have vision, but have the courage to see their ideas through. To the administration and to the faculty, I extend a deep appreciation on behalf of the entire student body. I will always hold this honor as the focal point of my life. I feel that what I have gained in being Student Body Presi- dent will prove to be invaluable to me in my life. iT council | Tt ta Ea Waea sacnagagagageg : het te] | | A Nyt be | i eL | Ltt Dion Goldsworthy [=] o ao) “A oO Me Aa oO oO 2 S io’) i=] 43 fo, i) Fall Vice-President Larry Hirahara Student Council Advisor Miss Margaret Dominici NYL President: Mike Robertson Commissioner of Publicity: Fall: Bob Gaines Spring: Dion Goldsworthy NYL Secretary: Carol Taylor Commissioner of Finance: Fall: Pam Deaver Spring: Donn Imrie i Commissioner of Awards: Fall: Kim Neely Spring: Steve Loquaci apenenens nn J i ¢ Clerk: Spring: Cindy Brunolli Fall: Nancy Prosperi Se I Commissioner of Club Activities: Fall: Jeanette Taylor Spring: Cathy Lesan Commissioner of School Spirit: Spring: Joan Del Bianco Fall: Nancy Hope 7 PSE if | TH as 5 il PAA | Z a | ai! ie Roger Williams Spring: Barry Bedwell Sophomore Class Presidents Fall: Steve Bottini Spring: David Morin Fall: Freshman Class Presidents Rod Melikian Fall: Spring: David Melikian Senior Class Presidents Steve Loquaci Junior Class Presidents Fall: Spring: Larry Southall 72 BOYS State Last summer I had the privilege of attending—along with 854 other boys —the 1967 California Boys’ State in Sacramento. Boys’ State has been called a “laboratory of practical political science,” and that is, perhaps, the most accurate description. The true purpose of Boys’ State lies in the fact that, instead of sitting around and talking about gov- ernment, we were actually organizing and participating in government. There were over 500 elective and appointive offices available on the city, county, and state levels; and this gave a majority of the delegates an opportunity to participate actively. My experience at Boys’ State gave me valuable insight into the actual work- ings of government, and the experience proved to be both challenging and rewarding. Problems with storms and mortgages, friendly neighbors and unfriendly neighbors, and cows and gravel and manure delighted capacity audiences each night. Tradition carries on as this year’s Senior Horizon group sponsored the Christmas Ball. ‘The theme for the ball was Santa’s Shanty. Members of the club worked hard to make the Christmas Ball one of the nicest holiday formals. Santa and his wife were there to greet the couples as they entered the colorful world of Santa’s work- shop. Music was created by the Glory Bound Train. One could hear some of the boys commenting on the attire of their dates saying, “I’ve never seen her look so beautiful.” And the same could be heard from the girls saying, “I’ve never seen him look so handsome.” All in all the success of the Christmas Ball could be expressed in four short words . .. With a tough defensive line and the throwing of quarterback Ken Taylor and the pass receiving of end Dan Roden, Madera was able to command the contest and bring home the victory. Along with the victory, the Coyotes garnered the famed stetson hat of former California governor Goodwin Knight. This win marked the seventh time in 14 contests that Madera had gained possession of it. Turning in the outstanding defensive game was tackle Dave England. EdISON 6 MADERA O With numerous rash mistakes and penalties the Coyotes dropped a heartbreaking 7-0 loss to the speedy Edison Tigers. Playing at McLane Stadium, the score remained 0-0 through the first half. Disaster struck though in the third quarter when Tiger John Easter received a Coyote punt on his own 30 yard line and raced 70 yards down the left side of the field for the lone score. Coyotes Steve Whitehead, Steve Imrie, and Jeff Cerioni led the Madera running attack for the night, while Brian Hill, Andy Guiterrez, Donn Imrie, Tom Hilken and Allen Cosyns turned in respective defensive jobs. chowchilLla 26 MAdERA 19 Playing a non-league match with the valley’s number one team proved to be another disappointing evening. Madera scored all 19 points in the first half and took a 19-7 lead down to the dressing room. Unfortunately the Coyote defense went lack in the final quar ter and the Redskins were able to score their own 19 points. Quarterback Ken Taylor, halfbacks Steve Imrie and Steve Whitehead, and fullback Jeff Cerioni all turned in commen- dable offensive performances. Brian Hill, Albert Smith, Terry Adair, Allen Cosyns, Gerry Desmond, and ‘Jim Hodge performed good at their defensive positions. ——i om Don Brazil Lyle Bott Steve Herring Allen Cosyns David Lowry Keith Rigby David Ruiz Dave Melikian 133 Joe Pettit Mark Williams Albert Smith FRESNO 35 - MADERA O The Coyotes never really got going in this contest and the Warriors virtually kept control of the en- tire game. Fresno’s Vic Lamanuzzi caught three touchdown passes to lead the Warrior offensive attack. Madera’s offensive line faltered in this contest, but as the season progressed Madera would later be known for its tenacious defensive line. MADERA 28 - NOOVER 27 In what had to be the Coyotes’ finest hour, they upset previously unbeaten and fifth ranked Hoo- ver High. Seniors Dwayne Crump and Ken Taylor provided the main nucleus for the win. Crump gained over a hundred yards on 11 carries, while Taylor did a fine job directing the offensive attack at his quarterback position. Hoover had maintained a lead over the Coyotes until the final 50 seconds. With a bad snap from center, a host of Coyotes converged on a Patriot in his own end zone for a two point safety and the victory. Opening the offensive line for the Coyotes were Steve Loquaci, Steve Rau, Dave Melikian, Brian Hill, and Brad Slaven. Madera led in all the statistical categories, but the inability to produce led to the downfall. Ken Taylor and Dwayne Crump again turned in commendable per- formances, but luck was not with them that night. Taylor was able to throw 18 times in the contest and usually had plenty of time, but the Clovis sec- ondary defensive was so good it pressed the Coyote 7 passing attack. Halfback Steve Whitehead also turned in one of his best performances of the year as he shone both on offense and defense. mclane 7 - MADERA O Although losing the game, Madera’s defensive unit held their own and showed why they’re one of the toughest in the league. Sparked by the play of Donn Imrie, Jim Hodge, Andy Gutierrez, Terry Adair, and Dave England, the Coyotes managed to contain the Highlanders until a last quarter surge led by McLane’s Dave Wiggins turned the tide. It should also be noted that Madera’s offensive backfield had four main players missing which might have made the differ- ence. Penalties were also a main factor in this contest as the Coyotes were put back 90 yards by the officials. Gary Linderman Don Watson 135 BULLARO 33 - MADERA 7 Madera fell behind quickly in the traditional home- coming contest, but fought valiantly throughout the game. Ken Taylor, Dwayne Crump, Steve Whitehead, and Dan Roden all played fine offen- sive games. Madera could just not stop all-league quarterback Monty Schultz and company. The Coyote defense was better than the scores indicate, though. The game was broke wide open on two long bombs from Schultz to ends Bob Erikson and Tom Delaney. Making one of his numerous tackles this year is defensive half- back Dwayne Crump. It was defensive plays like this which earned Crump, Dan Roden, and Jim Hodge, all league honors. ROOSEVEIT 12 - MADERA 7 Playing without quarterback Ken Taylor the Coy- otes’ play was a bit rough, but the running attack got smoother as the game progressed. Dwayne Crump, Steve Whitehead, and Allen Co- syns played respectively in this contest. Madera’s defensive team also had a good night. Best offensive blocks of the evening came when Bob Jacobs and Floyd Wilson opened up a hole for Cosyns who scampered 37 yards for the lone Coyote touchdown. Halfback Doug Machado scoots through the Rough Rider de- fensive line for valuable yardage. 136 Award winners for this year’s varsity football team were (left to right): Allen Cosyns, most improved; Dwayne Crump, most valu- able player; Steve Whitehead, most dependable; Jim Hodge, most was Ken Taylor, co-captain. Junior co-captain Larry Tribble. 153 Wrestling at the 112 lb. slot this year was junior Robert Arballo. Robert had to work real hard to get down to this weight, but in the end it seemed to be worth it. Not pictured on these pages are four more boys who contrib- uted greatly to the team’s winning accomplishments. Unfor- tunately photos were not taken of freshman Petey King, jun- iors George Marquez and Laddie King, and senior Dan Cere- ghino. Petey, in the 95-lb. class, Laddie, in the 127-lb. post, and George, in the 103-lb. slot, will be coming back next year and hope to help the Coyotes of 1969 retain the championship. Heavyweight Dan Cereghino improved immensely his last year and finally came into his own. Although out weighed by most of his opponents, Dan usually came through with the victory. He will undoubtedly be missed next year. Junior Ed McIntyre was the man in the 120 lb. class. Mac worked hard continually throughout the season. If he hadn’t sustained injuries late in the season, Madera might have been valley champs. Sensational is the only word to use when Whitehead. Wrestling in the 133 lb. slot, Steve breezed through some 40 matches without defeat. describing undefeated Steve Marking Higginbotham, a senior, kept the 138 lb. division intact during the long season, Mark came on strong in the latter part of the season as he captured first place in league. Manning the 145 Ib. class was Madera’s most improved wrestler Dale Arthur. Dale won a stirring win in the McLane match which sparked the Coyotes to a much needed contest. | | on VaR S ITY Probably the most exciting wrestler to watch was fast moving Larry Tribble. Going in the 165 lb. weight division, Larry very seldom win TITLE Brian Hill, a senior who made some fine upsets this year, handled the tough 175 lb. post. He once had a pin streak of three in a row this year. Another junior, Tim Del Toro, did remarkably well in the 154 One of the steadiest wrestlers on the squad this year had to be Ib. slot. This has only been one year in our eternal search for quintessence, and a lifetime stretches ahead of us to con- tinue our quest, the quest that is the true adventure in life. We would like to thank all those who have made this an- nual possible: Ralph Howell, Dale Griffin, Chase Studio, Alan Brown, and Pat O’Rourke who assisted us with the photography; all the students who willingly sold ads and all the businesses who willingly bought them; all our un- derstanding parents and our understanding teachers; and last but not least, our long-suffering advisor, Mr. Gene Griffith, who helped us transform our dreams for this an- nual into reality.
