oot rerenarg: a ooo RV Spc tees rte tae Saranac sence In the school year of 1966-67 the Seniors will have completed their last four years of mandatory schooling. Many will continue on to college or universities but all will have to rely somewhat on what they have gotten out of high school. We hope they have matured since their elementary grades. Along with the mental and physical changes of the students are those of the towns, cities, and countries. In our “67” Blue and White we will take “A look into the Past,” and by viewing the past, judge the present. We should benefit from past events and experiences by im- proving the present and future. Our Heritage is probably the most important thing we have received from our ancestors. Transport your mind back to the days of the horseless carriage and short pants. Enjoy a swim at the beach in the latest knee to neck “Mod” fashions, then, on to the flickers for the latest melo-drama. Our ancestors had difficult times too, but they survived a stock market crash, two world wars, and still life goes on. People are like the first car companies. They start with the raw product and keep on trying to improve it. They benefit from their mistakes, though at the time it may not appear that way. A person can’t just sit still and expect things to happen by themselves. He must use the knowledge he has gained and apply it to the future to improve the world around him and make a nicer place in which his children can live. Looking back one day, let us hope our past will be as nice as the one we see behind us today. And although there is eagerness and anticipation for the future, there is bound to be, for many of you, nostalgia and even some sadness at the parting. You may remember: your nervousness on Regis- tration Day and your sophistication as a Sopho- more; your excitement at making the team or achiev- ing a desired position; the teacher who broadened your horizons or who made a difficult subject under- standable; the friendships developed; and of course, you have the special memories of the games and other activities that add so much to high school life. You may remember, painfully, teams not made, balls and opportunities fumbled, of subjects not mastered, but even these are not total losses, if you have the humility to learn from them. I trust that although you may “look into the past,” you will never be satisfied to live there, but will find its value chiefly in fond memories and in the lessons it has to teach. White Christmas White Christmas was the theme for this year’s Christmas Ball, held Saturday, De- cember 17, 1966. The girls’ gym was trans- formed into a winter spectacular by the hard working Senior Horizon, led by Presi- dent Debbie Pistoresi. The couples danced to the music of the Lavender Hill Mob, and for the first time, a king and queen were selected by all the couples attending the dance. Reigning over the dance were Pete Bronzini and Patricia Hensley. Decorating for the Christmas Ball are: Ginger Van Vleet, Linda Benway, Susan Wood, and Debbie Pistoresi. 99 A Cappella 100 Girls’ Glee A ‘ FF es ry Cw ey j ‘—_ 102 Freshman Assembly The Freshman-Sophomore Recep- tions at Madera have always been enjoyable, and this year’s was no exception. The sophomore class c hose It’s a Mod Mod World for their theme and had mod cut-outs of teenagers decorating the walls. It was held December 3, 1966 in the girls’ gym to the music of the Lavender Hill Mob. The king and queen of the dance were Larry Southall and Patty Bishel. 105 “L sprained it!” “But you weren’t limping this afternoon!” Time Out For Ginger “Imagine me and you...” This year’s Senior Play, presented by the class of “67,” was the comedy, TIME OUT FOR GINGER. Under the guidance of Mrs. Culp, it was performed Wednesday through Saturday, March 15-18, 1967, in the Thomas Jefferson Audi- torium. It portrayed a modern family including three teen-age daughters, and the problems they created. Bev Chesonis played the lead role of Ginger, the youngest of three teen-age daughters. Richard and Doug Beban, mem- bers of the Madera Future Farmers, their father, Louis Beban, and cousin Jerry Beban, lost their lives in an automobile accident while returning to Madera from the Great Western Livestock Show in Los Angeles. Richard and Doug were very active members of our chapter, partici- pating in Judging Teams, Project Competition, and Showing of Live- stock. Their father, Louis, himself a former Madera Future Farmer, was known to all for the time and effort spent on all Future Farmer activities. The Great Western Livestock Show has established a memorial schol- arship in the name of the Beban family. 117 Ski Club ROW 1: G. Del Bianco, B. Hench, D. Foster, C. Pistoresi, P. Emmert, P. Bick, S. Tyler Madera’s opening football game of the season was against highly touted Tulare. Although Tulare scored the first time they got their hands on the ball, Madera went into the half with a 14 - 12 lead. In the third quarter, Tulare scored two quick touch- downs which made the score 25-14. Madera came back in the fourth quarter topped by Robert Tyler’s 65-yard touchdown run which added six points. Ted Goto’s kick was good to make the final score 25 - 21. The Coyote’s first league game was a thriller. In the first quarter Madera scored on their first drive. They held the Rough Riders and went into the half with a 7 - 0 lead. Roosevelt kicked off in the second half. Madera lost a fumble on their first play which resulted as a Roosevelt score. The extra point at- tempt was missed leaving the score 7 - 6. The fourth quarter was a defensive battle. Madera stopped two of Roosevelt’s drives on the 5 yard line. The final score remained 7 - 6. Kocoris Madera’s mid season game was a non-league game against Hanford. The Coyotes overpowered Hanford to come out at half-time with a comfortable 21 - 0 lead. Hanford scored on a long pass in the third quarter but the extra point was blocked which still left Madera with a comfortable 21 - 6 lead. The Coyotes again failed to move the ball and had to give it up. The fourth quarter proved to be a dis- aster for the Coyotes’ defense. Hanford’s Bull-Pups scored two touchdowns but because of their missed extra point attempt, they failed to tie the score. The final score was 21 - 19. Madera 21 - Fresno 34 The Coyotes displayed their potential power against Fresno High, but were hindered by the unfortunate breaks of the game. Maderahad a 14 - 7 half-time lead but lost the lead in the second half after an unfortunate fumble which Fresno picked up and ran 85 yards for a touchdown. This broke Madera’s back which resulted in a breakdown in the over- all defense. Madera scored again on a 75-yard touchdown run by John Kocoris but the time ran out leaving the score 21 - 34. T. The first half was all Madera, with Madera’s strong defense shutting out the Scotties, and the offense pushing over a score for a 7-0 half-time lead. The second half was a different story, with McLane limiting most of the play with a devastating passing attack scor- ing three touchdowns. Madera came back in the fourth quarter and scored the final touchdown. Final score—14 - 19. S. Green L. Badorine 136 Madera ended their season with a tough ga me against the N.Y.L. Co-Champions, the Bullard Knights. It was a must game for both teams. Bul- lard needed the win to cinch the N.Y.L. crown and Madera needed it to stay out of the cellar. Bullard scored on the fourth play of the game with John Manoogian’s 60-yard run. Bullard scored again and went in at the half with a 13 - 0 lead. Madera scored in the third quarter when Larry Badorine blocked a Bullard punt and Dan Roden picked it up and danced thirty yards for a score. Madera’s defense held until the fourth quarter when Bullard pushed over the final score after Madera lost the ball on downs deep in their own territory. Final score— Madera 7, Bullard 20. J. This can be attributed to aggressive defensive play, because the club never did reach its potential offensively, shooting 33% from the field and 38% from the free throw line. Madera defeated every team it played, with the ex- ception of league champion Edison. There will be many vacancies next year — nine members of the varsity are graduating this year.
