PROLOGUE In assembling this yearbook, the purpose has been to portray a small but exceedingly significant portion of the lives of a small yet potentially influential segment of the human element. These are the students of Madera Union High School. Included are all those who affect the student body, such as the administration. The final product, it is hoped, will paint a picture, complete and comprehensive, of Madera High and all those who walk its hallowed halls. The main medium of expression used here is photography. Actual pictures of people— some at work, some at play, some caught unawares in candid poses—provide the bulk of this publication. The images presented in photos are generally clear and unequivo- cal, offering themselves at face value for what they are, and without leaving any room for personal interpretation. The next medium of expression, art, leaves much opportunity for personal interpreta- tion. The artists have skillfully placed on paper impressions, concepts, ideas. The ac- tual comprehension of these is an individual task. The number of different meanings is as great as the number of persons who take time to reflect on the expressions. The last medium of expression lies in the underlying theme of the yearbook, the Sea of Life. Here, too, one is allowed much room for personal translation. The ideas taken from MAn, LIfe, and SEa are explicit, but their manifestations are subject to the whims of the individual mind. The story told holds a variety of messages, depending on the reader. With this foreword, we, the editors, present to you the Sea of Life: Blue and White, 1966.
