MALISE: MAn, LIfe, SEa The theme of this year’s annual, the Sea of Life is based on three ideas: Man, Life, Sea. The word MALISE is an anagram of these ideas, and thus encompasses the entire theme in one word. THE SEA OF LIFE PROLOGUE In assembling this yearbook, the purpose has been to portray a small but exceedingly significant portion of the lives of a small yet potentially influential segment of the human element. These are the students of Madera Union High School. Included are all those who affect the student body, such as the administration. The final product, it is hoped, will paint a picture, complete and comprehensive, of Madera High and all those who walk its hallowed halls. The main medium of expression used here is photography. Actual pictures of people— some at work, some at play, some caught unawares in candid poses—provide the bulk of this publication. The images presented in photos are generally clear and unequivo- cal, offering themselves at face value for what they are, and without leaving any room for personal interpretation. The next medium of expression, art, leaves much opportunity for personal interpreta- tion. The artists have skillfully placed on paper impressions, concepts, ideas. The ac- tual comprehension of these is an individual task. The number of different meanings is as great as the number of persons who take time to reflect on the expressions. The last medium of expression lies in the underlying theme of the yearbook, the Sea of Life. Here, too, one is allowed much room for personal translation. The ideas taken from MAn, LIfe, and SEa are explicit, but their manifestations are subject to the whims of the individual mind. The story told holds a variety of messages, depending on the reader. With this foreword, we, the editors, present to you the Sea of Life: Blue and White, 1966. You become the diver, and as such you must be concerned with your approach, the hurdle step, the take-off and following lift, form and execution, and, finally, your entrance. Your approach to high school represents your attitude toward education as formed by your earlier training; the hurdle step is like subject matter—you must accomplish it with proficiency; the take-off is a result of the drive and energy you generate for the school tasks which confront you. Finally, your scholastic performance and partici- pation in beneficial activities can be likened to the form and execution, culminating with a proper entrance, either into a chosen field of work or in further education. Applicants for member- ship must have a varsity letter in any sport and must meet strict citizenship qualifi- cations. Two of the Block M’s primary services to the community and to the school are the toy drive and Block M Week. The toy drive is an annual benefit drive for needy families in Madera. Block M collects old toys from Madera residents and the inmates at juvenile hall repair them as Christmas gifts for poor children. Block M Week is the result of months of careful preparation by Block M members. It is carried out the week of the final home game of the football season. This year, some of the Week’s events were a noon dance and a “Hire-A-Squire” Day. The activities were climaxed by the crowning of Block M Queen, Miss Karen Isakson. ——- LEFT TO RIGHT: D. The team consisted of Bruce Castle, Marijane Wensrich, and Susan Pere- goy, captain. The team scored a victory of 200 to 175 over San Joaquin Memorial High School of Fresno. Returning to compete again on March 27, 1966, Madera’s team, consisting of Melinda Givens, Marijane Wensrich, and Susan Peregoy, captain, succumbed to a defeat by Tulare. The score was 180-180 at the half, but Tulare came through during the last few minutes of the game to score. The final score was 235-200. Miss Dominici was official advisor of the team, with Mrs. Wensrich assisting. One result of Madera’s initial victory was a practice buzzer and bell system which Mr. Cozby made. FRESHMEN SOPHOMORE RECEPTION | ear 4 Clown Couple Regie Medellin and Pam Wilkens. The Freshman-Sophomore Reception was held in the Girls’ Gym on December 4, 1965. As tradition holds, a King and Queen were chosen. This year the theme was “Carnival,” and chosen Clown Couple were Pam Wilkens and Regie Medellin. Music was provided by the Ebonknights. FRESHMEN ASSEMBLY At the annual Freshman Assembly, many of the talented freshman students displayed their interpretation of the arts. In the past, these assemblies have been fine ones and this year was no exception. There were dancers, tumblers, a violinist, and even a band. yey, ‘ Re oo DANCES CUPID'S PARADISE The eve of February 12, 1966, was the an- nual Valentine’s Day dance. The affair took place in the Girls’ Gym, which looked like a paradise. The theme, Cupid’s Para- dise, was carried out in the decorations. The centerpiece was a cupid hanging from the ceiling. Hearts were linked together throughout the gym. Each table had its own centerpiece of a heart and a cupid with a carnation in the center. For refresh- ments, heart-shaped cookies were served. Youth Against Cancer was happy for its great success and the pleasurable time the many couples had. 65 CHRISTMAS “°-Twas the Night Before Christmas” was the theme of this year’s Christmas Ball given by the Aurora Horizon on December 18, 1965. The many couples danced to the music of the Ebonknights. The theme was carried out with couples entering through a chimney onto the dance floor. Santa was even there—reindeer and all! JUNIOR 6 Tee doe de TaN Tah eal in On May 15, 1965, the splendid Junior-Senior Prom was held in the Girls’ Gym. The theme this year was “Roman Rendezvous.” The crowning of the Prom Queen was the high point of the evening. This year’s Queen was Miss Sandi Carmassi, with Shirley Noble and Melinda Hamer as her atten- dants. The hard-working Juniors put many hours into the beautiful decorations. The Roman theme was carried out in every detail from the many pillars placed about the room to the bubbling water fountain in the center. The many couples danced from nine o’clock until twelve midnight to music provided by the Cindermen. SENIOR PLAY “THE CURIOUS SAVAGE” On March 17, 18, and 19, the Senior Class of 1966 presented one of the finest Senior plays ever pro- duced in the history of Madera High. “The Curi- ous Savage” was a comedy about a wealthy widow, Mrs. Savage, whose step-children wished her to be committed to an insane asylum, thus allowing the wealth to fall into their hands. While in the insti- tution, Mrs. Savage learns many a lesson of life from her fellow inmates. A tender ending ensues o with Mrs. Savage reluctantly leaving the institu- Fo, Pictag tion and the dear friends she has made there. Her children having ceased attempting to obtain her money, Mrs. Savage is, indeed, a free woman as she leaves the institution. The acting was undoubt- ably some of the best Madera High has ever pro- duced. The set was excellent, also. oe! 4) =J € STANDING: Mary Wood, Keith Drury, Ronald Avila, Cindy Ballard, Joe Marquez, Jeff Miles, Paul Milor. Steve Herring Debbie Pistoresi To my Fellow Students: “To be, or not to be, that is the question.” The truth of this statement is determining many people’s lives, mine to a degree, too. I made up my mind to go to America for both personal and philosophical reasons, and I have cer- tainly not regretted by decision. My stay here at Madera Union High School has contributed to my personality and experi- ence and made my viewpoints more versa- tile. I am sure both you students and I have benefited from our friendships and this understanding of one another is what our world of wrath and tears needs to pre- serve humanity from destroying itself. I have looked in admiration at many activi- ties on campus, and inspiring it has been to see the future citizens of America show so much capability and initiative. Now I want to extend my greetings and gratitude to the administration, faculty, and stu- dents for making my stay possible and for accepting me among you. The moment we all dislike has arrived, the moment where our ways have to part, and so my good- bye to you, my friends, with the hope to return some day. Field trips were taken to the business department of Fresno City College, and to the Welfare Department and the County Hospital to observe office opportunities. Job opportu- nities were presented and discussed by a guest speaker from the Madera County Employment Office. A Nancy Taylor charm course demonstration was given by a guest speaker from 4C’s College. A stu- dent wishing to join is required to be taking a business course and be planning to take one in the coming year. Mr. Gustin, Advisor; Officers: L. Saragoza, M. Chavira, V. Ruckman, S. MADERA 7-TULARE 6 B. Hawkins Madera’s first game proved to be a close and hard- fought contest. The game was riddled by Madera fumbles and Tulare penalties. Both seemed to have opening-game jitters. In the first quarter of play, neither team could score. The lone threat ended on the Tulare 20-yard line after a Madera fumble was recovered by Tulare. The second quarter Tu- lare came the closest to scoring. A pass intercep- tion by Linebacker Millard Henderson ended the threat on the 10-yard line. The third quarter was a battle of defenses and still no score. The first play of the fourth quarter brought a touchdown. A quarterback sneak from a yard out by Bruce Hawkins gave Madera a six-point lead. The all- important conversion by Ted Goto was the winning margin of the game. On Tulare’s ensuing kickoff they ran the ball back for a touchdown. The point after failed, and Madera squeaked a 7-6 victory. Standouts for Madera were Ron Manfredi, Bruce Hawkins, Dave Williams, and Jeff Mendoza. Players of the Week Madera’s first league contest was a tie against highly-touted Roosevelt. On Madera’s first drive, the Coyotes moved the ball to the Rough Riders’ eight-yard line on runs by Delbert McAlister and Jeff Mendoza. The Roosevelt defense stiffened and Madera lost the ball on downs. On Roosevelt’s first offensive play, Linebacker Millard Henderson picked off a loose pass and scampered untouched into the end zone for Madera’s first score. Madera controlled the game offensively and defensively through the first half. The Coyotes almost scored again in the second quarter on a pass from Bruce Hawkins to David Williams, ending up on the Riders’ three-yard line—only to be called back for a clipping penalty. In the third quarter, Madera was in control again. Late in the quarter, a pass to Don McKinney from Hawkins lighted the Coy- otes’ scoreboard with six more points. The fourth quarter saw Roosevelt score two lucky touchdowns in the last four minutes to give Madera a disap- pointing 12-12 tie. Standouts for the Coyotes were Jeff Mendoza, Bruce Hawkins, and Don McKinney. D. McKinney J. Hirahara Madera’s finest game so far, and it proved the tie with the Rough Riders was no joke. In their first series of downs, Madera was stopped. The punt by Nick Lattanzio was fumbled on the three-yard line, and it was recovered by Jamie Weldon to set the fuse to Madera’s romp. Hawkins scored the touch- down on a sneak from the one-yard line. The next time the Coyotes were stopped and again punted, and again they recovered the fumbled punt as this time Joe Machock was the Coyote on the scene. Hawkins then scored on a roll-out to make it 14-0 after the first quarter. In the second period, Merced scored a touchdown on a sensational pass play. This only angered the Coyotes more. Madera moved down to score twice again before the half ended, making the score 27-7. Madera, in the third quarter, again scored on a drive from the Coyotes’ five-yard line to paydirt on runs by Jeff Mendoza and Greg Franklin. Madera’s little Do-Do rubbed it in even more as he returned a punt back 55 yards for another touchdown. The next score came after a Jim Hirahara interception, and this brought the final score to 40-13. Standouts for the Coyotes were Dave Williams, Bruce Hawkins, Jamie Wel- don, and Jeff Mendoza. Players of the Week Madera’s first “big game” proved that the Coyotes could take it under pressure. And prove it they did with a convincing 20-7 victory over the strong Edi- son Tigers! Madera’s first offensive series proved disastrous as Edison recovered and scored on a cir- cus catch in the end zone with defenders hanging on. This was the last time Edison was in the game. On the next series, runs by Jeff Mendoza set up a T.D. pass from Hawkins to End Dave Williams for the Coyotes’ first score. Edison had to punt on the next series, but End Jamie Weldon’s blocked punt ended up a touchdown for the Coyotes. The second and third periods were defensive ones as Ron Manfredi, Jamie Weldon, Byron Sciacqua, and Steve Slaven threw the Tiger quarterback for con- tinuous losses. The final Madera score came on runs by Robert Brannon and Greg Franklin with Brannon taking the ball in from the three-yard line to end the game—Madera 20, Edison 7. Coy- ote standouts were Millard Henderson, Jamie Wel- don, Ron Manfredi, Byron Sciacqua, Steve Slaven, and Robert Brannon. B. Sciaqua B. Franklin Madera again outhustled and outplayed its opponent and added to its string of victories. Madera took the opening kickoff and marched to a score on passes by Hawkins to End Dave Williams. Hanford, on its first play from scrim- make, went all the way on a draw play. Madera scored once again before the half on runs by Jeff Mendoza and Greg Franklin. Just before the gun, Hawkins scored on a keeper and the half time score was 12-7. Madera, in the third quarter, scored on a Bruce Hawkins to Don McKinney pass play, making it Madera 19, Hanford 12. Madera’s defense held the Hanford Bullpups to a minimum of yard- age in the second half and they did not score until late in the fourth quarter. Madera’s final score came on a run of 20 yards by Halfback Jeff Mendoza. The final score: Ma- dera 24, Hanford 13. Standouts for the Coyotes were Don McKinney, Jeff Mendoza, Greg Franklin, Steve Slaven, and Byron Sciacqua. The Coyotes’ biggest victory of the year saw Ma- dera overtake and outhustle Fresno High. Fresno was the first to score. A fumble set up the first of two quick first quarter touchdowns. The second came on the ensuing kickoff on another fumble. On the next play, Fresno scored on a pass play. After another quarter of play, Madera finally got going. On passes to Ends Dave Williams and Don McKinney, Madera scored with five seconds left in the half. In the second half, Madera scored the first time, making it Fresno 13, Madera 12. The defense held and Madera, not to be denied, scored with Jeff Mendoza carrying it over. Fresno’s final drive ended on the Madera ten when a pass inter- ception by Millard Henderson ended the threat. Fresno again tried desperately to score, but a heads- up play by Tackle Steve Slaven, who recovered a Warrior fumble, sewed up our victory. Standouts for the Coyotes were Steve Slaven, Ron Manfredi, Jamie Weldon, Millard Henderson, Jeff Mendoza, and Dave Williams. Players of the Week S. Slaven J. Brannon Madera’s first loss was a costly one as we were knocked from first place in the N.Y.L. Madera’s game was one of mistakes and first half sluggish- ness. Two quick Patriot touchdowns were unable to be surpassed as both touchdowns for Madera were unaccompanied by the extra point—a fault all year long. But Madera’s spirit and fight brought them back in the second half to gain the respect of all Madera. The Coyotes outplayed Hoover in all statistics but scoring, and the Coyotes lost, 14-12. Standouts for the Coyotes were Robert Brannon, Greg Franklin, and Don McKinney. Players of the Week The Madera High Coyotes turned in one of their best performances of the year. While rolling up more than 400 net yards, the Coyotes’ tough de- fense held the Cougars to a mere four yards on the ground. Clovis’ two touchdowns came on freak plays—a fumble and pass interception. Madera, led by Jeff Mendoza’s 185 yards in 16 carries, first scored on a short pass from Quarterback Bruce Hawkins to End Dave Williams. After one of Clovis’ lucky touchdowns, the Coyotes settled down and Hawkins again was the main factor in the scoring with a short sneak and a touchdown pass to Don McKinney. With the Coyotes ahead, 26-13, little Jeff Mendoza put the icing on the cake with a spectacular 65 yard romp. Standouts for the Coy- otes were Jeff Mendoza, Bruce Hawkins, Don Mc- Kinney, and Ron Manfredi. D. McKinney J. Mendoza MADERA 32-CLOVIS [3 Mendoza breaks away from Cougars for valuable gain. Franklin races through McLane defense for long yardage. MADERA 13-MCLANE 33 Players of the Week The McLane Highlanders completely outclassed the Coyotes in probably our worst game of the sea- son. After two first quarter touchdowns by the Highlanders, the Coyotes never did quite catch up. This was a particularly hard defeat for the Maderans, for it knocked them out of the race for the championship. The Coyotes did manage one score via a short pass play from Hawkins to End Don McKinney. The Coyotes were still in the game until late in the third period. After the Coy- otes stopped McLane on the two-yard line, we fumbled in our own end zone and the Highlanders jumped on the loose ball for the score. Madera lost the ball six times by fumbles and pass intercep- A tions, and this led mostly to our defeat. Standouts y for the Coyotes were Joe Machock and Greg Frank- 4 lin. J. Machock G. Franklin The Madera Coyotes made Homecoming 1965 a memorable one by completely trouncing the Bullard Knights, 26-13. The game was not actually as close as the final score indicated, for the Coyotes, led by an almost entire Senior team, did not allow Bullard to score until the fourth quarter. The first score came only minutes after the Coyotes got their hands on the ball, with Mendoza doing most of the carrying and Brannon bringing it in from the three- yard line. In the second quarter, the Coy- otes struck again with a 13-yard romp by Brannon and a 47-yard pass play from Hawkins to Williams, leaving the Coyotes with a comfortable 19-0 half-time lead. After Steve Slaven pounced on a Bullard fumble, Bruce Hawkins ended Madera’s scoring for the year with a short sneak. When the Knights finally did get moving, it was against Madera’s reserves and they managed to score twice in the closing min- utes. This victory gave the Coyotes a tie for second place in the N.Y.L. and a very fine season. S. McLane 33 Bullard 13 This season Madera, in my belief, was the best team in the N.Y.L. But we were not a lucky team, and we had to fight for all of our games. The Coyotes had the spirit, the desire, and the material. The coaching was just great. Coach Warner’s first varsity season brought Madera back as a football power in the Valley, and, I am sure, there will be many, many more—knowing Coach Warner. Madera had so many outstanding players it is hard to mention any particular one. I would like to wish the best of luck to Ron Manfredi, Jamie Weldon, and Dave Williams in the annual City-County All-Star Game in Fresno next summer. Also, I want to congratulate the 1965-66 Coyotes on a great season—way to go, gang! Sports Editor Millard Henderson Head Varsity Coach Our football team this year was composed of many fine young men who had tremendous desire and courage. Rather than a group of individuals, this was a team which displayed a sense of unity and team spirit. It was further characterized by great initiative and steady improvement. By fashioning a record of seven wins, two losses, and one tie, these boys finished second in the always-tough Northern Yosemite League; and our school and community can well be proud of such a fine effort. The early sea- son contests many times found Madera on the short end of the score; however, they added experience, and it soon began to pay off. Zamora Josie Zaragosa Ruben Zarate Nn ale O.. Ce YO O ae = re Jeanne Hatch Editor In the production of any work there is al- ways a number of individuals who have contributed to the success of that work by assisting silently and behind-the-scenes, so to speak. The 1966 Blue White is no ex- ception to this rule. First of all we wish to express our thanks to our advisor Mr. Gene Griffith and the Annual Staff. Through their time-consuming efforts and diligent hard work this production has been made possible. We extend our sincere apprecia- tion to Mr. Ralph Howell and Mr. Dale Griffin for their excellent workmanship on the senior portraits. We are especially grateful to them for their patience and gen- erosity in printing up extra glossies for vari- ous pages of the Annual. The colored pic- ture of the A Cappella Choir is the work of Mr. Howell; our thanks to him once again. To our yearbook representatives from the R. Wallace Pischel, Inc.—Darrel Stanley and Barry Crow—goes our deepest gratitude. As a result of their helpful advice our year was relatively smooth. We also wish to express our appreciation to the fac- ulty members for their patience in bearing certain inconveniences occasionally im- posed upon them. Without the support of the Boosters, the Advertisers and our class- mates who purchased annuals, this project could not have been financed. May all of you share with us the highlights of our “Sea of Life.” Jeanne Hatch Susan Peregoy Er imoGUE Having thus portrayed the many experiences en- compassed within the seas of life, we bring to a close our record, and in closing our record, we mark the completion of a metamorphic phase in the lives of the inhabitants of the Sea of Life. Our story depicts one year, a mere cycle of the tide in the time medium of the Sea of Life. Furthermore, our record is finite; the rising and falling of the tide will continue for- ever, and life, too, will go on. In this sense our rec- ord is incomplete; but our purpose has not been to encompass the infinite nor to confine the eternal. Our purpose has been to portray but an infinitesi- mal segment of the infinite and the eternal: the year 1965-1966 at Madera Union High School. With this last word we, the editors, leave you, the vital in- habitants of the Sea of Life and subjects of the forces of MALISE. Susan Peregoy Editor Boosters Mr. Ralph Webster Mr. P. A. Westing Dr. John Lutz Dr. Robert Rowe Dr. William Guttormsson Mr. Denslow Green Mr. Alex Robertson Mr. Buzz Peregoy The Staff of this yearbook wishes to extend its sincere thanks to all of the professional men whose donations made the production of this annual possible.
