van-him FCDREWORD Every great book ever written, every great play ever produced, and every famous piece of art ever created is representative of its creatofs appeal to the mass audience on the subject of people and their common problems. Whether a man lives in China, England, or South An1erica, he has the same hopes and fears. Because we are people and share in this bond, we under- stand and feel compassion for our fellow world citizens. In his Pulitzer Prize winning play, OUR TOWN, Thornton Wilder plucks a few people out of his mind, sets them in the middle of a bare stage, and presents a drama of every day life. Although these people live in a very small imaginary town in the United States, they are representa- tive of the people in similar communities all over the world. From this small group we can project their actions and motiva- tions to states, nations, and the whole earth. Hoping to find a common ground for all those who will read this book, the staff has focused its efforts to produce a book which depicts the interests and activities of this community. Although we can do this only in a limited way, we do hope that the memories stored in these pages will be those which you will always enjoy reflect- ing upon as the years pass.
