SLIPERI TE DE T f 1'-. 1 A 3 In front of me on my desk are the original minutes of thc first meeting of the Madera Union High School Board of Trustees, dated july ll, 1903. It was on this date that our high school was officially and legally brought into existence. The first course of study adopted was a commercial course, and the first classes were conducted in the basement of the courthouse. The first school building was con- structed for approximately thirty thousand dollars with the provision that Ray- mond granite be used in the construction whencver called for. Now, sixt ears later, our hi h school s reads over a fift -acre cam us and Y Y 3 .P Y P , houses almost twenty-one hundred students in seventy classrooms. The total school plant is valued at upwards of four million dollars and is almost completely paid for. High school education in our town is a big business--an important business- a vital business. ffitgm it tl I l .J the ,Y DMINISTR TIO The administration and faculty of Madera Union High School have a most difficult and rewarding task. They must prepare the student for an active role in the community after graduation. Through instruction in academic subjects and physical train- ing they undertake a responsibility whirh is of vast importance in any modern town. Since the faculty members are in Closer contact with the students. they perhaps are burdened with the greatest portion of the responsibility. They must teach the students to examine their experiences and attempt explanations for what happens, throwing out the faulty ones. They must arouse an interest in community affairs, and they must be willing to share their experiences. In its relationship to the community, the admin- istration must assume the responsibility of co- ordination. It must meet the questions of a growing community and see that the students under its direction receive the proper background for their future role.
