SUPERINTENDENT ... I view education as the most important subject we as people can be engaged in. This statement by Abraham Lincoln is as true today as when uttered a hundred years ago. Our philosophy of government, democracy, is based upon the utmost development of the individual through education in a free society. Your education should enable you to acquire useable knowledge, form useful skills, develop an openness of mind, strengthen your self-discipline, and in- crease your sense of responsibility toward yourself, your family, and your fellow man. This education does not come about in some easy, effortless way-- you must work to attain it. Are you working for it? RINALDO WREN Time Progressed, Everything Was Ready. But... VICE PRINCIPAL School life can be a challenging and happy experi- ence or a dull and unpleasant one, whichever we choose. This applies to the student, classroom teacher, or administrator. I try to take the posi- tive approach to school life. The young people of today must think positively about the future and be working toward certain objectives and goals. The high school student, or the adult, without daily and life goals will be un- happy with himself and the world around him. Gauge your own abilities and interests--do not try to fit yourself to someone else's pattern. Then plan accordingly No doubt you have all at sometime been disciplined for deviating from the accepted standards of be- havior. If you are honest with yourself, you will admit that such discipline was for your own good and the good of all. Outside discipline is neces- sary --eventual self-discipline is the hope of those doing the disciplining. In school life and beyond school, we cannot avoid responsibility--to our- selves and to others. Unfortunately, some people think that there is something radically wrong with the youth today. I do not subscribe to this idea. Young people today have as much ability, as many worthy desires and commendable motives as young people have always had. Inaddition they have a greater general knowl- edge than ever before. These are trying times-- even at the level of school life--but I believe that you have, and will continue to, meet whatever challenges are presented. BOARD OF TRUSTEES B= a yf Ox ayers BORO) 3 at Pd ALEX MacDONALD John Sordi, Jack Desmond, Wallace Emmert, Frank April, Elmo Del Bianco. on the Designated Day, of Opening, a Terrible Thing Happened .. . ADMINISTRATORS ROBERT MACHADO SANFORD GROVER CURRICULUM AND GUIDANCE Counseling makes high school life a happy and benefiting experi- ence for all students. It takes into consideration the basic educa- tional, social and vocational needs, and abilities of each individual student and then tries to meet these needs through the school's curriculum and activities. Through individual student conferences, parent conferences, pro- gram planning conferences, teacher conferences and testing, the needs of each student are determined. Remembering each individ- ual's needs and ability, good counseling will then try to place each student where he will have a maximum chance for success and en- joyment while in school. To be in classes which are no challenge is discouraging but to be ina class with a realistic challenge is rewarding. These rewards are a result of counseling which makes for a long-remembered and happy school life. DEAN OF GIRLS To help freshman girls decide on their educational goals, to co- ordinate assembly and club activities, to arrange an activity pro- gram open to all girls, and to counsel with girls who desire help-- these are the duties and opportunities of a dean of girls in our high school. AUXILIARY SERVICES Diversification these days, whether it involves practices in agri- culture, a variety of business skills, or the breadth of knowledge demanded ofa scientist, modern education is no exception as teach- ers and administrators pursue their daily assignments. The personification .of diversification, for example, is the teacher ofa one-room school. You name it. She teaches it. Even the large school system teachers have heavy preparation loads--some- times four or five different subjects of different grade levels of one or two subjects. So it is with administrators. As a member of the administrative staff, Mr. Grover, director of auxiliary services, serves both students and teachers in a wide variety of ways. The students look to him for job placement for part time work, publicity of their schoolevents, work permits, 1.D. cards, publication of the fresh- man handbook, spring programing of incoming frosh, setting up special events such as college night, armed forces day, open houses, and offering counsel to those having dropped out who wish to continue of a correspondence basis. This year we lacked experience and depth. We had only 8 returning lettermen andall of them were shifted to different positions, either offensively or defen- sively. This inexperience made them incapable of performing well enough to win in this league. However we ended the season with a 3-3 record. We coaches feel that a great deal of football knowledge was learned and hope that it will be proven next year. + « RECORD... The 1962 Coyotes proved to be a very interesting and unpredictable ball club. Our playing ranged from outstanding to mediocre. These types of performances can be readily traced to the fact that we were a very inexperienced band of athletes, as only two letter winners were back from last year's team and seven squad members were Juniors. Though our NYL record was only 5-7 and our over all season record 6-12, it was quite an improvement over the marks of Coyote teams of recent years. Any success we had can be attributed to the fact that we had no star, but that teamwork, hustle, and desire on the part of the entire squad prevailed. We look forward to next year with high hopes and expectations of having a very outstanding team. --Gay Dacus MADERA MADERA Sons Hantord esee7, B ORn rere Roosevelt ... 53 ae Doskalos j25. ol Dye a ES GUSOne rae 74 44.... lelenaiorel go55 BO) SU saws Bull areca sees 29 DOW ae Gentialler-re 24 Sioleea ioe: Melane ea... 44 AST sane DOSPalosmeaa ol MOue tenses CilowilSi ween ee 56 39 eSellinias ast fare 42 TDs ee Basesnommnae ae 65 Sse Melane a... 43 Ay cane Roosevelt ... 54 Scheie a ea ea 27 BM esta 5 | PRISE: (ac oe Saye 56 a “ a Ke ngoo ISCO ooo 6c 41 Hh goon leullll@veGl soon oc 52 ee OF. The main function of student government is to provide an op- portunity for student leaders to learn by doing. ’ Most extra- curricular activities at Madera Hi are coordinated by the Student Council. The council is directly responsible for all assemblies, school spirit, upholding school traditions, reviewing bills passed by the legislature, executing approved legislation. Each month the student body president and another delegates at- tend the Northern Yosemite League Student Councils Association meetings, where problems concerning the various schools in the league are discussed. This is the group that is responsible for the Sportsmanship trophy. This year the Student Council has been extremely busy. Some of their specific activities and projects include: Hosting the annual NYL Leadership Day; setting up a student speakers bureau; di- recting the Christmas school decorating contest; organizing the Christmas Talent Assembly. It is hard for me to express how I feel about this book. The book was hard work, but everyone had fun. The co- operation thatI received from the staff, ad- ministration, faculty, organizations, and the student body as a whole was immeasur - able. Without this help the book might never have been published. So many people helped that it is difficult to recognize all of those who deserve recognition. My assistant edi- tor, John Morgan, gave tremendous assist- ance. Hurst and Matchette studios also de- serve special recognition for all the work they did on Senior portraits. The school photographer, Mr. Tinker and his assist- ants, were always ready to help. Madera News Tribune was of great help with ath- letic pictures. Our advisor, Mr. Trestrail, helped us and encouraged us every day. Every member of the staff, Dale Yocum, Judy Biggs, Ron Zimmerman, Pat Over- gaard, and Morgan, did his part. Thanks again to everyone. We hope that the 1962 Blue and White will meet with your ap- proval. Judy Messel Editor ne Sage a NT Ba GE OD
