The button pushers are just below the scientists, both in intelligence and social status. They are curious creatures with bulging eyes and bony fingers. These qualities adapt them admirably for use not only as button pushers but pinball machines as well, They are among the most excitable .people in the universe, probably because they drink a gallon of high-grade kerosene before every meal. The juniors realize that they too are subordinates, but they also realize that they are the leaders of next year, They have already received training in han- dling key duties and are disciplining themselves in preparation for carrying out the responsibilities which will be entrusted to them. fei 5 es ri Mary Abundis Ruben Acedo Bryce Acree Virginia Aguilar Billy Amey Paul Amey Susan Anderson Sue Anthony Mesami Aoki Georgeanne Aplon Josephine Arias Shirley Armentrout a aA om N Tobria Arnbrister Kathleen Avellar Gerald Avila Marion Ayala Jean Baccelli Angie Bais Dennis Baker Mike Baroldi Manuel Barraza Mike Bartlett Frances Barton Greg Basila Beverly Bellinger Dan Bertozzi Michael Bick Judy Biggs Carole Bischel Gary Bolding Gene Bond Annie Bonilla Johnny Bradford Larry Bradley Odell Brammer Bud Branstetter Ronnie Breazell Gene Brewer Don Bridges Wayne Bridges Susan Bristow Virgil Brocchini Jerry Brooks David Brown Larry Brown Narma Brown Willie Brown Tony Bulgara Allen Burris Judy Bush Sally Cadenazzi Audrey Cameron Chris Camy Gloria Candia Cheryl Cappelluti Evelyn Castillo Mary Cerda Ray Cereghino Sue Chambers Tom Chambers _ The Rest of the Crew Irma Chapa Ramon Chavez Aurora Chavira Jerry Cheek Terry Cheek Mike Chipman Jimmie Clifton Linda Cobb Linda Coleman Clinton Collins John Collins Retha Collins Richard Contreras Louise Cook Leslie Cowan Louise Crawley Ken Crites Ronnie Daggett Alfred Della Roman De La Rosa Dick DeMello Johnny Deniz Karon Denney Janet De Pasque John Deprivate Stella Desatoff Morris Desmond Jerida Diar Stella Dilbeck Ken Dixon Russ Dockery Margaret Dollar Beckie Dom Milaun Dowell Patricia Doyle Bill Driggs Don Dumont Dolores Durazo Ronnie Duvall Arlene Eaton Darlene Edde Linda Edwards Loretta Edwards Clint Ellis James Elrod Tom Embrey Michael Escobedo Delphina Esparza Al Espanola Geary Evans Marion Raso Steve Ficklin Isaac Fimbrez Jim Flores John Flores Donna Fontes Dennis Forrester Gary Foust Betty Frazel Larry Frede Dorothy Freeman Carmen Galindo Amelia Garcia Lloyd Garner Sharon Gazaway Gene Gee John Gee James Georges Tommy Gerbi Judee Gill Edith Glass Jo Ann Gomes Eva Gonzales Henry Gonzales Rita Gonzales Ronnie Goodrum John Gottwald Dorothy Gough Robert Gray John Greer Kay Greer Dock Griffin Doug Grover Jerrell Gunter Catherine Gutierrez John Gutierrez H. ROCKET OPERATORS .. . The rocket operators are considered important people on spaceships because they are the only ones that enjoy standing around and tending the 1100° engines in the rear. It is a real joy to watch the rocket operators carrying out their duties and playing dirty tricks on the rest of the crew like sending the spaceship in two directions at the same time. The sophomores also are hard workers who manage to get pleasure from what they do. They have had one year of valuable experience and are beginning to take a really active part in sports and student body affairs. % - 5S CRs Ae eee Ole ae NSF TOPO ALS Lae Of Course, Most People on the Earth Connie Abundis Harry Adame Stella Adame Mary Alarcon Sharon Albonico Jim Alexander Roy Allen Nancy Allison Richard Allred Jeannette Alves Dwight Amey Harvey Aoki Sue Aoki Mario Apodaca Ray April Janice Arnold Myra Aten Peggy Atlard Shari Audiss Mike Badella Adele Balbas Manuel Baldenegro Dan Baldridge Linda Baldridge Louise Banks John Baranek James Barboza Gail Barcus Christopher Barsotti Jonathan Barsotti Robert Bates Nickie Beck Carles Beckett Rephah Berg Dale Bitter Robb Blake Larry Blow Gene Boles Gail Bowen Joyce Bowerman Jerry Bowles Eddie Boyle Ina Bradley Darlene Breazell Jimmie Bridges Wanda Bridges Saundria Briscoe Allen Brown Joyce Brown Johnny Bunch Carroll Burris Tom Butler Camille Camarillo Blanche Campbell Jimmie Cantrell Ken Cereghino Gloria Cervantez Carolin Chandler Daniel Chatman Theresa Chavira Tommy Chavira Richard Cheatham Stella Cheatham Larry Cheek Royce Childers Florisa Clancy Chris Clark Kathleen Clark Forbes Clawson Jim Cobb Connie Cobo Richard Cody Jerry Coen Carl Conner Theresa Contreras David Cortez Patricia Crafton Randy Craig Claude Cranmer Katherine Crowder Aren’t This Intellectually Inclined Jess Crumley Doris Daniels Mary Daniels Marian Davis Gloria DeLaFuente Jerry Della Sheryl De Mello Irvin Denney Jeri Dettman George Diaz Henry Diaz Donna Dilbeck Norma Dirks Jimmy Dockery Ronn Dominici Charles Doolin Ken Drury Annette Duarte Marshall Duarte Evelyn Dunn Johnny Dunn Jerry Eads Sondra Echols Winton Edwards Jackie Elias Ray Elisariaras Paula Elliott Jean Embrey Barbara Emrick Nancy Epstein Christine Ervin Philip Erwin Phyllis Erwin Loretta Esparza Henry Esquivel Priscilla Farmer Pat Farrar Margie Faulkner Betty Fernandes Linda Ferrarese Barbara Ferreira Frances Filiponi Dwight Fincher Bob Finley Pat Flack Al Fox Mary Frazer Jeleruller Norma Fulmer Gary Furtado Gloria Ganda Carol Gangbin Rudy Garcia Louise Garrett Jessie Gaskins Carolin Gazaway Gail Gist Vern Gleen Ellen Glover Andrea Gonzales Jim Gonzales Orval Gordon Roy Graham John Gray William Greer Eugene Gunter Sammy Gutierrez Mike Haines Donna Haley Dorothy Hall Amie Hallum Tanya Halopoff Albirta Harris Carolyn Harris Mary Ann Harris Lonnie Harbart Sheryl Hardin Nick Harkins Naomi Hartfield Sherryl Hatch Allen Hawkins Billy Hawkins Roger Haydu Don Haywood Karen Heinemann Mose Henderson Jerry Hensley Manuel Hernandez Mary Jean Hernandez Angie Herrera Mike Herschfelt Leroy Hill Billy Hill Roy Hilstead Stanley Hirahara Sammy Holguin Jerry Holfeltz Barbara Holiday Lee Holman Gail Hoover Dorothy Hopkins Lawrence Howard Hugh Huffman Edith Hughes Adam Hugues Elaine Hurst Jimmie Iness Shirley Jackson Lena Jacobs Eddie Johnson Edward Jolliff Echester Jones Josephine Jones Shirley Jones Alvin Jordan Carroll Justice Karol Kay Charlotte Kelley Pat Kennedy Linda Kilcrease Barbara King James King Magnolia King Jonathan Kleinert James Knight Linda Knight Mickey Konkol Avisia Krubnik Doris Kurisu Gary Lakeman John Lamanuzzi Ray Lasswell Odessa Laster Bonie Lee Martha Lee Verda Lee Linda Leidig Freda Lemons Servada Leon Diane Lewis Connie Lindstom Barry Lockhart Janice Logoluso Glenn Long Jimmie Long Carolyn Lopez Isabel Lopez Samuel Lopez Cherie Lovejoy Barbara Lowe Klina Lyon Barbara MacDonald Loretta Macial Rachel Maciel Richard Mackey Margaret Madewell Linda Madole Quinn Maggiorini Emily Magos Francisco Magos ... Besides carrying garbage, members are assigned to such degrading tasks as operating aerosol bug sprays; reading dull novels about Dick, Jane, Sally, and menagerie; and licking the boots of their superiors (which is everybody). This is the only group ina rocket crew that must sleep outside, and since there is no atmosphere in space to spread the heat of the sun, the garbage detail is half-baked. The freshmen of Madera Hi get their share of knocks and shocks. They have been thrust into new surroundings and must adapt themselves to the more vigor - ous pace of high school. However, the freshmen are quick to learn the ways of the upperclassmen and will have many opportunities to show their ability in the near future. —.... Coach Tom Clark's five started the season by winning one of their six pre-season games, The win was a 43-36 upset victory over San Joaquin Memorial and coming at the end of the practice slate, it indicated that the Coyotes might be on the road to better fortunes. The hope for a winning team began to come true as Madera trounced the Merced Bears in the league opener at Merced, After this win the Maderans met Edison and Roosevelt and streak of victories ended, The second half of league play began and again the Coyotes were the short end of scores until a big win over the Bullard Knights. The losses during the second-half included a defeat by Edison in which the Coyotes again held the Tigers under 50 points. These games indicated Madera's fine defensive play. The 20th annual punch bowl was held on March 2 and 8, 1961 in the MUHS Gymnasium. The event was sponsored by Block M. This year competition was centered around two evenings, the first night deciding the semi-finalists and the second night devoted to the finals. Forty-five boxers participated in these two nights of competition, a series of 20 bouts during the first night deciding the semi-finalists. Ten bouts held during the second night determined the champions in each weight class. The boxers were also divided into two teams, red and blue. Therefore, competition was based on a team score as well as an individual victory. Standouts of the evening were Sam Gutierrez, James Echols, Winton Edwards, and Dan Barboza, as well as many others. A new scoring system was introduced by the coaching staff. From all appearances it seems as though Madera has come up with a first, and could very well be the leader in interscholastic and intercolleagiate boxing A | circles in advocating this type of system. Madera High's wrestling team, under the wing of Head Coach Vern Brooks and Student Assistant John King, had another very successful season this year, The wrestlers were undefeated in dual meets, thereby winning the North Yosemite League Championship; and their only tournament loss was to McLane in the NYL tournament February 11. This loss was avenged the very next week, however, when Madera's wrestlers won their third consecutive C.I.F. Central Section Championship over several strong high schools, including McLane, by an overwhelming 37 points. Because of a new Central Section ruling, teams in this section were not allowed to compete in the Northern California Invitational Tournament, and so the Central Section Championships were the highest level on which the team competed. The Coyotes have lacked the advantage of traditional competition; instead they have had to dive into a tough league. However, there is a spirit on the team this year which says that the other teams had better be ready to duck when they see Madera coming. Graduating Seniors have formed an important part of the Varsity team with performances in: the Backstroke, Breastroke, Butterfly, and Freestyle events. These Sen- iors are bolstered by additional men who will continue to carry on the spirit set up by the team this year, The B team has com- menced the season with outstanding performances against Hanford and Sanger with scores that more than made up for a humili- ating defeat by Sanger last year, The girls are an up and coming team and should reach their peak in another year, ROW 1: D. The 1961 tennis team to date has won 7 matches while losing two. At full strength we feel we have better than an average squad, The team has an outside chance to win the championship but it will be tough going and we will need a lot of luck. Clovis the defending champ, is our biggest worry with Bullard and McLane coming next. We are determined to place Ist or 2nd. All in all the youngsters on the squad are a fine group of ladies and gentlemen and also some of our schools best athletes. If the last of the season turns out as well as the first half we will have had an excellent year, As far as our future is concerned we have the best freshman and sophomore tennis players that we've had in a long time. Atthe present time the baseball record is four wins and three losses. Games won include Bullard, Merced, Edison and Dos Palos. The losses are Roosevelt, Dos Palos, and Chowchilla, The baseball team this year is a young ballteam, comprised mainly of sophomores and juniors. The team has been steadily improving and the coaches believe that before the season is over, they should have a fairly sound hustling team. With some breaks in the games, they could end the season on or near the top of the league, Outstanding seniors at the present time are Jim Arballo, centerfield; Willie Clark, first base; Jim Lovelace, outfield and pitcher; and Chester Payne, third base, Promising juniors include the following: Gary Koch, pitcher; Ron Zimmerman, second base; John Thomas, outfield; Tom Shitanishi, shortstop; and Terry Cheek, outfield. Golf at MUHS is creating a lot of interest and participation considering that it is a relatively new interscholastic sport. The team owes a great deal of its growth and interest to the Madera Golf and Country Club which has generously and unobtrusively granted the use of their facilities. Every golf pro that has operated the club has given freely of his time to instruct the boys in the rudi- ments of the game. Golf provides the student with a competitive game in which he can participate after he is out of school. Come One, Come All. . . The Coyote track picture has been steadily improving at Madera. The team had one of its finish season's this year, There were many outstanding performers. The A class was led by three of the outstanding broadjump- ers inthe state. Kent Nance, Norm Wood, and Gene Brewer all jumped 22 feet in competition this year, In the running events Dennis McGilvray and David Young proved to be in a class by themselves, helping to set several new score marks, Madera's premier weight men, Rod Cappelluti and Huston Ridge, proved to be tireless workers, their efforts paying off with many outstanding records in meets ranging from King City to Los Angeles. The BandC class performers showed that they had depth and talent going through most of the season un- defeated, The potential of these squads points a rosy picture for the track fortunes of Madera in future years. The off-duty operations of a space crew consist mainly of the only sure-fire method the commanders have foundto keep the men out of trouble--lock them in adark room and pipe in tape recordings of giggling girls. Then let them go crazy trying to find the voices. When they are completely exhausted, drag out the bodies and stackthem in a railroad car for transportation back to the space- ship. The activities at Madera Hi cover a wide field. Among other things, they pro- vide entertainment, encourage school spirit, bring together people with mutual interests, run student government, and promote constructive and cultural efforts. These activities provide the student with Opportunities to associate with others and to develop his abilities. in pete 4 STUDENT COUNCIL... To set the best of examples, to lead with confidence and to represent with ability are just a few of the responsibilities of the 1960-1961 Student Council. These were all accomplished by the influence of George B. McWherter and John F, Sellai, Student Body Presidents. Working under a newly revised Constitution the Council traveled many an untried road, These roads were filled with many unexpected perils, but conquered. A newly regulated body, Student Legislature, accomplished the passage of about twenty-five individual bills. These bills represented the wishes and the gripes of the general Student Body. After these bills were passed by the administration, Student Council was responsible for having these actions enforced. The twenty-four members of Madera Union High School's Student Council should have the feeling of pride for their willingness and their ability to do the very best, They have, also, established in the Student Body the desire to take an active part MR, GLENN WALDHART in our Student Government. an a A NAS aN ST, George McWherter Wayne Behrend John Sellai Student Body President Senior Class President Student Body President Fall Fall Spring 110 “All Right, Everybody, It’s Activity Time!” Say the Leaders. The majorettes used lighted batons and the band members had flashlights mounted on their feet. Other excellent shows were Summer Memories” and Love. Walter Ficklin was the announcer for all these shows and did an excellent job except one embarrassing time when he got on KYNO radio instead of the public-address system. Madera High's band was the first to use its own special arrangements and our majorettes were the first to wear sequined uniforms, facts of which we can be proud. And this year in the 20th All-Western Band Review, Clinton Mahaffey won first place in the non-twirling drum major division witha score of 96 out of 100 possible. The band competing with 75 others, did not place in the top five; but strangely enough scored 293 out of 300, a figure which was higher than that which our first place band received three years ago. Florence Baker Editor The Maderan is the student's only source of Madera High news. Through this periodical comes the voice of the student government telling everyone exactly whatit has decided for the welfare of the student body. The many projects and deeds that are executed by the clubs and their individual mem - bers are publicized in the Maderan, as well they should be. Social events are highlighted to all their magnificance and splendor to increase the read- er's interest in his school. The many accomplishments of our scholars and intellects are printed for allto viewand be proud of. For the many who de- fend the honor of Madera High on the sports field goes much credit and also much space on the pages of the paper. The Maderan is the main link be- tween the high school and the community. Businessmen who are interested in Our success as students support the paper financially through advertising. Our parentsread with avid interest about theinstitution at which their son or daughter spends two-thirds of his time. However, the community is not the extent of Maderan distribution. Many schools in the valley, in California, and even in other states receive copies as exchange papers. This exchange of ideas and news results in progress toward a school that is more enjoyable, more educational, and more valu- able to its students. The students of Journalism not only print a paper they receive a lesson they will long remember. Their contributions to the Ma- deran are teaching them the art of newspaper printing by the best possible way to learn it--experience. Kay Smith Former Editor Have Been Ironed Out of Society. BLUE AND WHITE Sergies Shiemeonien-Harien Editor From the beginning not a thing is. I am Sergies, a Shiemeonien- Harien; behold the challenge which I have met and overcome. This is truly a work written in the spiritof an original which has never existed. Its end is to provoke, to awaken the suppressed yearnings of the prim- eval mind; its end is to loose ancient shackles, to incite and cause dis- content. Light was before the sun; ever so, the latent existence of the nature of things was long before its manifestation. Always and everywhere the individual attempts to fathom the complex mechanics of his situation and grasp the seed which propagates everything, which is able to pro- pagates everything, which is able to provide the answers to the frantic questions he has posed. The seed lies exposed, but human beings are blind and do not perceive it. Man is he who is able to pierce the wall which is not there; the myopic masses remain forever entangled in themselves and locked out of the Kingdom. So then, ye brave young lions, this I nowsay unto you! --Open your eyes, read the garbage Ihave written, and see what you make of it... If nothing, then do not worry, there is always next year. He doesn't stand a chance, utters the guard as she leads the jurors into the desolate jury room, The whole thing looks like an open-and-shut case until one juror begins to point out certain facts to the jury. “This is a remarkable thing about democracy, says the foreign-born juror, that we are notified by mail to come down to this place--and decide on the innocence or guilt of a man, of a man we have not known before. We have nothing to gain or lose by our verdict. We should not make it a personal thing iyere But it does become personal as each juror reveals her own character as various testimonies are re-examined, the murder re-enacted, anda new murder arising before their own eyes. The critical phrase of the decision is beyond a reasonable doubt. It becomes apparent that most of the jurors have not bothered to doubt. Tempers are short, arguments are long, and the jurors become 12 angry women, Janice DeMello, Student Director. Gum anyone? Easy does it. Santa makes the rounds while the couples dance on and on into the evening. 136 All right, everyone, line up! Some of them must not have heard. Eat, drink and be merry for soon it will be all over and just another memory. 137 FROSH-SOPH RECEPTION . . . ene Rhapsody in Pink was the theme of the Freshman-Sophomore Reception, which took place on December 3, 1960. The California Scholarship Federation is an honor organization composed of members who have excelled in academic subjects. Besides a satisfactory citizenship evaluation, an appli- cant must present a minimum of ten grade points for membership. The eighty-one mem- bers of Madera's Chapter 43c work at games and concessions throughout the year to supple- ment the club's treasury, which at present is the largest in the school, From these funds come scholarships, presented at the end of each year to worthy life members which the club mem- bers choose by secret ballot. Life members are also eligible for many other scholarshipsand are usually enrolledin the lower division honor so- ciety of thecollege they attend, The CSF con- vention was held in Sanger this year, and mem- bers also attended an exciting two-day con- ference in San Francisco during the spring. In addition to these activities, the club holds an annual all-day picnic, usually at Santa Cruz. ROW 1: Grace Howker, Jeanne Welton, Marta Garner, Shirley Alves.
