Lilas. .. -,A The Coyotes finished their tough, long season at the bottom of the Northern Yosemite division. The lvl aderans only man- aged to chalk up two wins out of their nine game schedule. Both of these victories were non-league. Coach Con Winder's squad started out the season with high hopes of really producing a championship ball club. That vision grew dimmer and dimmer as injuries plagued the team all season. One of the big casualties which really hurt the Coyotes was the absence of Pete Kirk. Pete who could have really helped the Coyotes a great deal, suffered his second broken collar bone since the '53 campaign. The injury list was filled so much that Madera mentors often worried whether they would be able to have football practice from day to day. Quarterback Ben Robinson who led the team offensively and defensively, won the award of Most Valuable . The 6'3 signal-caller was recognized on the fisrt defensive All-League team. Bernard McDaniel Halfback Ben Robinson Quarterback Madera I4 - Porterville 20 In the opening game of the season the Madera High Coyotes locked horns with a very tough Porterville squad. Three long runs by halfback Matt Encians spelled defeat for the locals. Encians' runs were of 66, 79 and 49 yards. Ben Robinson, leading his team to their first score, climaxed a long march by passing to end Vem Schnaidt from 5 yards out for the Coyotes' first TD of the game. Again Robinson spear-headed the Maderans to another score in the final quarter ofthe game. He tried the center of the line on four plays from one yard away and tallied on the final play. Madera I9 -Clovis 6 The Coyotes broke into the win column as they downed the Cougers of Clovis in another non-league tilt. Madera did all the scoring in the first quarter. After recover- ing a Clovis fumble deep in Couger territory, the locals marched over the goal with the game only a minute and a few seconds old. After kicking off, the Coyotes made Clovis lose the ball on another fumble and scored once more. The Cougers' only tally came in the final minutes of the second quarter. Madera scored its final six pointer in the final stanza. Madera 7 - Hanford 27 Traveling to Hanford for their first league encounter, the Coyotes came face to face with a fast charging Bullpup eleven. It seemed everything the Coyotes did went wrong and every- thing the Bullpups did was right. Hanford pushed its scores over in the first half and second half. Madera came into full showing in the final stanza. Vem Smith packed the pigskin around end a couple of times to set the Maderans only score. Ben Robinson gallopped around end to climax a long march. Madera 13 - Fresno 28 The Coyotes put up a great fight in the Fresno High-Madera tussle. Operating out of a 'Split T formation the locals threw a big scare into the defending NYL champions. Madera drove down to the I5 and zo yard markers but were stalled there. Madera got their rallies in the final minute of the last period as Ben Robinson sneaked over for both TDs. The game went on equal basis until the Maderans recovered a Redskin fumble on the 'skins 22. Ben Robinson crossed the goal five plays later. In the first play of the second quarter, Robinson heaved a long pass to end Thurman Cheatham who gathered in the pigskin and raced all alone into the endzone. Unfortunately the play was nullified due to an offside on the part of the Coyotes. Tulare came back strong in the second half but still were unable to score enough to down the Coyotes. Madera 13 - Merced 20 A record crowd of 5, 500 at Memorial Stadium witnessed a very exciting battle when the Bears, league leading squad edged out their rivals, 20 to 13. The big gun for the Merced Bears was fullback Chuck Haggard. Haggard gained 150 yards in the contest. Madera tallied their touchdowns in the last seconds of the second quarter and in the final half. Ben Robinson sneaked over for the first and passed to Vern Schnaidt in the endzone from the five. Madera 0 - Edison 33 A very strong Edison squad displayed its fine offensive and defensive power as they shut out the Coyotes in Ratcliffe Stadium. Backs like White, Tatum and Hall were too much for the locals. The Tigers tallied in every period. The big offensive machine of Edison rolled up 26 points in the first half while the Maderans remained helplessly scoreless. Paul Cappelluti Bob Stafford Verne Schnaidt End Tackle End ' A L. I. One on a 78 yard punt re- turn, a long juant up the middle 44 yards and a plunge from the one yard marker put out the Coyotes fire.
