The Commissioners as a group select the members of various committees and make and en- force regulations for the mutual benefit of all stu- dents. Elections are held twice a year. This year a club co-ordinating committee was form- ed-called the Activities Committee. This committee consists of the vice presidents of all clubs except Boys' Federation, Girls' League and Girls' Athletic Association, which are already represented on the board. The formation of this club affords the clubs an opportunity to present their problems to the board and to have them solved. Madera High belongs to the California Association of Student Councils in which meetings are held several times a year and representatives from schools pre- sent their problems and receive suggestions for solu- tions. In this way, much valuable information on school government is acquired. MR. CHUCK CRAMPTON Boys' Fed. Madera High's fighting gridiron eleven had a sad season despite their gallant efforts. The Coyotes man- aged to rack up only one win in the '52 season. Their victory was against cellar dwelling Hanford High School. The locals were topped in their practice games as well as five league battles. In spite of their losing ways the Madera footballers displayed a great desire to play football. Their de- termination and hustle was acknowledged and re- spected by the many partisan followers that cheered the Coyotes game after game. The Madera offense was centered around the bril- liant running of Freddie Martin. Martin, who mastered every ground gaining technique, was equally. danger- ous on defense. Flashy Fred's versatile talents earned him a unanimous choice of the offensive all league team. The early part of the season featured a fine passing combination of Brent Freeman to Bob Chrisco. The Coyotes thrilled fans with long passes by Freeman which were snagged by the outstretched arms of Chrisco. VARSITY FOOTBALL Winder lnc. sweat it out. Coyotemen who did most to stop the drives of the opposition were all league defensive stars Jim Jorgen- sen and Jim Fleming. Jorgensen, vvho displayed some unmatchable foot- work in avoiding blockers at end position, time after time broke through rival interference to bring down the ball carrier for sufficient losses. Safety man slot vvas in the capable hands of Fleming, a fast moving back who had the habit of catching passes that were meant for the other team. Others to spark the Coyote cause were: Don Martin, Ken Montanari, Beuford Tindal, Ron McCulley, Oather Robbins, Otto Nickell, Don O'Meara, John Stenovich, Bob Johnson and the Sotelo brothers, Dan and Fred. Midseason in league play the Coyote coaching staff worked out a spread formation. This formation, never before tried at M. U. H. S., featured quarerback Free- man at tailback performing fine running and passing. A heavy majority of the regular starters of the current season will graduate this June, but the foot- ball outlook at Madera High, nevertheless, is good. Al- though a championship team would be a pleasant surprise next year, the possibility of a top eleven may be expected in l955. This reasoning is due to the large turnout of fresh- men and sophomores on the varsity squad this past season. l , .,,, , rr., Martin receives top player award. lt's easy to stay with ri winner, But it takes guts to stick to a loser. They fought hard, how- ever, through eight tough games, of which they ended up on the short end on each occasion. The campaign started against the strong Tulare Junior eleven with a 20-O defeat. This was followed by the Sanger tussle, where the locals lost a close 28- 24 tilt. Opening the league schedule the Junior Coyote men played host to Merced in a game that found the Bears on top of a T2 to 6 score. A TD by Don Klein, plus the extra point by Barney Gonzales were not enough to cope with Edison. The final count was Edison 19, Madera 7. The next contest for the B's was against the Roose- velt gridders. The Riders emerged victorious after four hard fought quarters, 6 to O. The Coyotes gave the league champion Visalia a scare before bowing l3 to 6. Hanford gave the Coyotes the worst beating of the year, 20-7. The final contest saw a great battle between the Fresno Warriors and Coyotes. The Fresno eleven emerged victors T3 to 6. Ragardless of a winless season four of the local stars made the all league team. Three other Coyotes placed on the second all star eleven. Maderans placing on the top team were: B team captain Arnold Brunetti, George Hatfield, Don Naciemento and Pete Kirk. Second stringers were: John Stockli, Don Klein and Marvin Marquez. Landing only a fourth place berth with a record of four wins and eight defeats did not keep the Coyotes from being one of the most feared quin- tets in the Yosemite League this past season. In the eight encounters that the locals dropped, they were never topped by more than a few baskets, and always gave the top teams a good score before bowing out. The league was won by Edison for the second year in succession. The hope for a championship five for Coach Chuck Crampton was iolted by a blow one day before the first league game. Freddie Martin, all around star at M. U. H. S. and the boy everyone had pinned their hopes on to lead the Coyotes to victory, was declared ineligible because he was four days too old for competition, Martin, the team play maker, was replaced by 5'6 Rich Rubio. Rubio handled this spot in fine style and was the team's second top scorer. He was awarded a special award for setting a fine example for younger players. Bob Chrisco, the team's top point getter, was voted the most valuable player on the squad and team captain. The third top scorer was Bob Johnson, a tali iunior playing center, who mastered a fine lump shot and hook shot. Big Swede was voted Most Improved. The team was rounded out with work-horses like Don Martin, who won the best sportsman- ship, and Don Cappelluti, the best Coyote re- bound man. Joe Arballo and sophomore Bob Murrey also contributed heavily to the Coyote cause. Chrisco was tabbed on the first string all league team and teammate Rubio placed on the second string all stars. Johnson and Martin made honorable mention. VARSITY BASKETBALL een, Edsel Williams, Front row, left to right: Ben Robinson, Jessie Owens, Paul Cappelluti, Duane Gr Oliver Walker. However, Walker, who was one of the Top rebound men in the league and only a freshman, is expected to move from Madera this summer. Although most of the top eight men will un- doubtedly be moved up to varsity, Gamboa will be left with a lot of up and coming talent for '54 basketball year. S. C and D quintets rambled through successful seasons in league standings, with a record of three wins and three defeats. The D's won all games in non-league competition, Participating in the City League the Junior varsity team ended their season by winding up in a fourth place tie. They were under the direc- tion of student coach Jack Avina. ALVINA J.V. At press time the local thinclads were looking for- ward to a successful '53 track season. The most watched individual will be senior Milton Shoe- mate. Shoemate, who competes in the high lump, has an excellent chance to win the valley finals and perform in the state meet. Jumping as a B last year, he broke various' rec- ords in his class and presently holds the varsity school rec- ord. He placed first in the high school varsity West Coast Relays last year with a lump of 6'l and 3f8 . In his first week of practice this season Flying Milton topped 6'2 . Don Martin, another high iumper, has the ability to give the opposition a lot of trouble. He was a star C class per- former during his freshman year, but due to a back iniury he was unable to compete until now, his senior year. Two seniors, Wilbert Amey and Robert Session, will be the boys to carry Madera s hopes for places in the dash running. ln the field events, Dick Ravalin looks like the best man for the locals. Amey besides being one of the best runners on the squad, is one of the top COACH RASMUSSEN broad lumpers in the league. Distance runner James Jackson and hurdler Don O'Meara also should help the Coyote cause considerably. VARSITY TRACK B TEAM-Front row, left to right: J. Firmalo, N. Greene, O. Mitchell, C. Jackson, D. B TRACK The Coyote B's go into the '53 season trying to repeat their league winning performance of last year, when they sneaked by Roosevelt High by one point. Vern Smith and Jim Firmalo are expected to lead the locals' attack. Both hold records in high lump and pole vault. C TRACK The Madera C team goes into an unpredictable season because most of Coach Rasmussen's ma- terial comes from the freshman class and has only competed in grammar school athletic events. Nevertheless their coach is optimistic and feels that once developed they will be a strong squad. C TEAM-Front row, left to right: J. Brosi, A. Kennedy, C. Jackson, O. Mitchell, C, Edwards. VARSITY BASEBALL At press time Coach Machado was working hard with his varsity men for the current season. The coach seemed optimistic about this season because he has a number of veterans returning. There was one large disappointment for the Coyotes, however-. Former starting catcher Oscar Chapa and first string short stop Freddie Martin were ineligible for competition this year because of age limitations. Back to the brighter side of the story, the Coyotes have last year's first and second top pitchers again. Bob Chrisco, the top moundsman on the club, will be doing most of the throwing, with Bob Johnson also contributing a lot of duty on the hill. Johnson will be returning next year. The outfield is in the hands of a senior, Arnold Burnetti, and Two sophomores, Pete Kirk and Bill Musick. The infield features Bob Stanfield at first, Ed Bannister at second, Don Martin at third and Rich Rubio at short stop. Catcher slot will be under the care of Harry Lowry. Bill Alessini, Bill Lively, Joe Arballo and Bill Segura have also been looking very good, as have chuckers Cleo Payne and Pete Gonzales. The batting power is centered around Kirk, Martin and Rubio. Chrisco, when not pitching, will be playing in the outfield and appearing in pinch hitting roles. In the first contest of the season the locals defeated Clovis High, 7 to 3, in a practice tilt. The offensive attack was led by Kirk's homer and Martin's three bagger. COACH CRAMPTON THE MOB THAT FACED COACH CHUCK Spring, when a young man's fancy Turns to-base- ball. Such was the case at Madera high this season. Junior Varsity Coach Crampton was handed the head- ache of sorting out the good from the bad a few days before the first practice game. This season's lot was probably the greatest in the school's history. With the season still very young at press time, it is difficult to spot the potential stars that will lead the victory parade for the Junior Coyotes. However, here are some of the boys that probably will be sparking the club: Veterans Paul Cappelluti at first, Sam Kurisu at second, Mike Roberts at third and Charlie Gutierrez at short. In the outfield are Jim Yamaguchi, Sal Rubio and Edsel Williams. Freshman Ray Bolding, at present, is holding down the catcher position and has great possibilities if he continues to improve as rapidly as he has been doing in the first weeks of practice. The top moundsman currently is Toyo Shitanishi. He is a sophomore and has the stuff to become a fine varsity pitcher. Other pitchers that could develop into fine chuckers with a little seasoning are Freshman Ken Duncan and sophomore Darrell Maroon. A few of the other eager hopefuls that have been looking good in early season play are: Ken Adolphson, Bob Lively, Henry Polanco, Gene McLaughlin, George Unti and Jim Barsott. J.V. Wrestling was introduced at MUHS in 1952. This year the Mangini grunters got started early and placed fourth in the league. COACH MANGINI BOXING This year's annual Punch Bowl was held March 20 and 21 in the MUHS gym. It was a wild affair with everyone giving their all. About forty eager boxers came out this season to make the Punch Bowl one of the top events of the year. Bottom row, left to right: C. Davis, R, Chavira, M. Lopez, D. Marquez, J. Garcia, N.
