The theme, the Golden aves ( Aes Jubilee, was chosen with this idea in mind, and iY a the sketches throughout the book depict the differences in work and pleasure of 50 years ago in Madera Union High School. Mita YJ ae 14 2 5 7 (res, Co, Sf Lp ON, ¢ protean 2 Y te ae ye Ce Edited by the Senior Class of 1947 Published by the Purple and White Staff MADERA UNION HIGH SCHOOL Madera, California MADPRA COUNTY LIBRARY MR. L. C. THOMPSON I am particularly pleased that the “Class of 1947” finds satisfaction in using, “The Golden Anniversary of Madera Union High School,” as the theme for their year book, The Purple and White. Since that memorable day four years ago when the present graduates staged a Freshman Assembly second to none, it has been obvious to those of us who have seen students come and go, that here is a group who have energy to spare, willingness to serve, and resourcefulness to meet any occasion. This group of 184 individuals, the largest graduating class, will bring the total number of Madera Union High School graduates past the 3,000 mark. The first fifty years of growth in our high school have seen difficult times, but today future progress is assured. Without effort, our section of the great ms ® State of California is the mecca for thousands from the less agreeable parts of our Country. We would not dare guess what another half century will do to that fortunate portion of the San Joaquin Valley called Madera, but we do venture to say that the graduates of 1947 will assume a decisive role in that P stirring episode of progress and history waiting to become a living thing. L. C. THOMPSON, Principal. DEDICATION MRS. GEORGE WIEGAND To Mrs. George Wiegand, who has been our most willing and helpful advisor for the past two years, the senior class of 1947 wishes to dedicate this annual. If the senior class were able to give an award for the most outstanding person of the year, Mrs. Wiegand would certainly claim that honor. Somehow along with her other duties as librarian, she has found time to advise and help the seniors in all their activities. Her intelligent leadership and patience have been the chief props to the success of the senior plans. By her cheerfulness she has shown to us that there is a silver lining even in the darkest of our problems. But since the seniors are not able to give that kind of an award, we can only try to show our appreciation by dedicating this annual to Mrs. Wiegand, our “first lady” of the year. a ARNOLD, JAMES ATKINSON, EDMUND BAIN, EMERSON BARRON, MADELINE BLUMENTHAL, BOUTELL, DOROTHY Music Physical Education History French A English Civics Spanish History Journalism Civics « ® BOWLUS, LORRAINE CAMPION, MARY A. Row 2, L. to R.: President, Vic Pistoresi; vice- president, Kenneth Jones. SENIOR MEMOIRS At their first meeting in October, the seniors elected Mrs. Vivian Wiegand as their class adviser, reordered their class rings and sweaters, and elected their class of- ficers. The first semester officers were as follows: Presi- dent, Vic Pistoresi; vice-president, Kenneth Jones; secre- tary, Ruby Jo Abercrombie; and treasurer, Bobbie Jo Beasley. The seniors also voted on their announcements and personal cards. Later in the year the seniors discussed carnival plans and selected a committee. The carnival committee worked very hard on the construction and theme for their booth, and the night of the carnival the seniors walked off with the prize for the best decorated booth and the highest honor of all—the throne for their king and queen, Stanley Toner and Evelyn Scheid. This year’s senior class has stood out at all of the carnivals as they won the throne in both their freshman and junior years, too. At their next class meeting, Commencement and Sneak Day Committees were selected. Sneak Day was set for February 28 when some of the seniors journeyed to the coast and to Badger Pass. On February 18 officers were elected for the second semester. Those selected were: President, Bill Eva; vice- president, Dino Petrucci; secretary, May Gong; and treas- urer, Wanda Potter. The seniors’ personal cards arrived in March and their graduation announcements in May. On the nights of March 7 and 8 the seniors presented their senior play en- titled, “The Night of January 16.” This play was directed by Miss Marian Jacobson. June was the biggest and busiest month of all for the seniors. On June 6 the senior reception was given for the perents of the graduating class. The Baccalaureate Service was held on June 8, and on June 10 the long awaited Junior-Senior Prom was held in the gymnasium. As a fitting climax to the seniors final week of school, Commencement was held on the night of June 11. June 12 the seniors bid their last farewell to the old Alma Mater and set out on their own to face the world. we SECOND SEMESTER OFFICERS Row 1, L. to R.: Secretary, May Gong; treasurer, Wanda Potter. This proved to be successful, but not quite successful enough. They decided to present a Variety Show with talent from the whole student body. The jun- iors handled the business connected with the show and received half the proceeds. At the carnival, the junior king and queen were runners-up for the most script sold. The juniors gave the graduating class of 1947 their prom on June 10 at the high school gym. The theme was “A Chinese Garden.’ ae ae Row 1, L. to R.: J. Andrew, B. Bosworth, E. Bongorno, R. Adame, J. Welcoming the Freshmen at the Freshman-Sophomore Reception was the first activity of the sophomore class. The theme of this gala affair was that of “Old Timers.’’ Those who attended dressed to fit the occasion. The next big event for the sophomore class was that of preparing for the carnival. Their booth which was decorated as a castle, won second place for the best-looking booth. At the Junior-Senior Prom a few members of the class helped to serve. FRESHMEN This year's freshman class got off to a good start with being the largest class ever to enter in Madera High. The total enrollment for the class was three hundred forty-four. The first few weeks of high school life was new to the freshmen and they spent quite a number of days getting acquainted. First on the list of freshman activities was Freak Day. All the freshmen cooperated and turned out to stage one of the biggest and best Freak Days that Madera High has seen. A few days later the freshmen were officially welcomed by the sopho- mores at the annual Freshman-Sophomore Reception. At the annual carnival they displayed their power as a class by coming in second place. The class, in spite of its size, did a good job! Row 1, L. to R.: N. Condit, M. Cook, T. Enos, N. Dobashi, P.
