Foreword BEE PLUS “Tf one were able to grade a school year in its relation to former ones, I would be compelled to mark 1945-1946 as definitely better than average. October found our spirits high in football, encouraged by student interest, a tough schedule, and a determined squad. Christmas holiday time was a welcome relaxation for a star senior play cast, the finalists in Girl's Archery, and for the ever-popular Var- sitonians. The New Year wakened and blinked at green but surprisingly good basketball teams, a gayly bedecked F.F.A. dance, and such successful functions as the Carnival and Junior Dance, while the Scholarship Society boasted an increase in’membership. As Easter peeped over a jagged shell, students were posing for the P. and W. pic- tures, our track team had just won another dual meet, the baseball nine had finished the best season in years, the tennis swingsters were disturbing people with their reports of victories, while the Pan American Student Forum hit a new high in their annual Fiesta. It sounds like boasting and it is boasting about a school year climaxed by a Sen- ior Reception to be remembered as a grand recital of vocal and instrumental music interspersed with interpretative oe “ dances. - s = Yes, it was an “A” year, but to ‘ pe give another year a chance, we are willing to settle for a “Bee Plus.” You graduates of 1946 played a de- cisive part in this year’s successes and we who stay on at Madera Union High School will be hoping and believing that you can and will continue to play decisive parts in the numerous activities beyond high school.” MR. L. C. THOMPSON, Principal Dedication It is with sincere gratitude and appreciation that we, the graduating class of 1946, are dedicating this publication to Miss Elizabeth Stoddard. During our four eventful years here at Madera High, Miss Stoddard has devoted much of her time and energy in solving the many problems which have confronted us. She has always greeted us with a happy smile and has given us her undivided attention at all times. The community has always benefitted by Miss Stoddard’s help, for she has given generously to many worth causes. Many a lonely serviceman beyond both oceans has forgotten his troubles for a little while and was made happy by reading the scrapbooks that Miss Stoddard has sent them. The heart-warming letters that they send her in response, help to express their gratefulness to her. And now, after forty years of successful teaching, nineteen of which were spent here at Madera High, she is planning to retire. We will all miss the kind, thoughtful, and pleasant person that is Miss Stoddard. The debaters began the year by entering a tri-county contest at Fresno. Throughout the year they debated Reedley, Sanger, Central, Laton, and Tranquillity. In the other divisions Jerry Thede entered the extemporaneous field; Evelyn Scheid, dramatic declamation, and Donald Poole and Dino Petrucci entered speaking contests, and the three entries in Lion’s Club contest were, Richard Cruz, Evelyn Scheid, and Janet Karahadian, resulting in Richard Cruz as the winner. All in all the speech division had an enjoyable and successful year. RICHARD CRUZ Lion's Club Contest Winner Debate: E. Scheid, J. Thede, B. Rowland, J. Denson. Seated: F. Maley, J. Morrison, D. With eight returning lettermen and a group of eager newcomers, Coach Atkinson managed to fashion a team which showed up well in comparison to other teams in this area. Probably the most outstanding games of the season were those played with our old rival, Merced. Although losing the traditional Thanksgiving Day game 6-0, the Coyotes’.were able to nip the Bears 13-0 earlier in the season. Another game which will probably not be soon forgotten was the one with Dos Palos, an undefeated team until they received a spec- __ Coach ED. ATKINSON tacular upset at Madera’s hands, 13-6. Outstanding players of the season, as determined by a vote of the players and the judgment of several coaches, were: Bob Ruud, Art Freeman, Victor Pistoresi, and Carlos Valenzuela. Morris, AM Al, STARTING LINE-UP “B” Football Due to the unusually large number of lightweight players which turned out for varsity football, Ma- dera High, for the first time since 1940, boasted a B football squad. Coached by Mr. Al Hawhecker, it turned in an impressive record, considering that no experienced material was available. After losing their first game to Selma 35-7, they bounced back to defeat all comers except Central with which they tied in a hard-fought game. Though at times facing teams much heavier than themselves, they proved they were a gallant group who could take it as well as dish it out. F. Shillings, D. acheco, R. Dolio, Rare, P. Huarte, J. Under the very able leadership of Coach “Teach” Ful- ler, Madera produced one of the better tennis teams in ,s the San Joaquin Valley. Under Coach Ed Atkinson's able direc- tion the Coyotes won a large share of their games and provided many an exciting moment for the fans. Track For the first time since before the war, Madera had a varsity team which rated A TEAM tou high in inter-school competition. With a group of last year’s “B’s’’ moving into A class Coach Jess Markle produced an excellent team. Indeed without his fine coaching it is doubtful whether our team would have attained the height that it did. Outstanding performers were Fred Boring in the pole vault; Art Freeman in the 100-yard dash; and Bob Langdon in the mile. Without these fellows the Coyotes would have lost many necessary points. Madera again entered several relay teams in the West Coast Relays and sent sev- eral individual performers to the State Meet. A power ful team in “B” class was Madera’s boast this past year. Under Coach Jess Markle’s capable guidance the team was in excellent shape by the first of the track wf SS) First Row: W. Marquez, P. Toschi, R. Jensen, G. Ownbey, W. Wellman, . Denney, L. Rowe, C. Atkinson, with several returning veterans and a selection of new material, shaped together a baseball team of which Coyote fans could be justly proud. Although not a spectacular team these Ma- dera players always came through when the going was the roughest. Without the able training of Coach Atkinson we never could have come through as well as we did. Ne ores ee, HEADING FOR HOMEPLATE a a Sat Cadet Corps CAPTS. R. KINNEY and J. MARKLE| Not Shown: LT. R. This made it possible for the cadets to take up such advanced courses as boxing, wrestling, and judo during the winter months. Also a great deal of credit should go to Captain Ross Kinney, Commandant of the Cadets at Madera High School, for training the cadets in military courtesy, close order drill, neatness in appearance, and leadership. Again as in the past, the Cadets willingly aided various civic organizations in can- vassing the town for the funds or information. savers BOW AND ARROW QUEENS BASKETBALL AS IT SHOULD BE PLAYED Dancing In The Dark Old Standbys Bored?
