Uennings 1921 = 19444 DEDICATION i Mr. Jess Markle has wisely guided us through our four years of high school, dealing with class problems with humor and understanding. Whenever something arose that was too large for us to handle alone, the by-word was “Ask Mr. Markle.” He always came through with the advice needed. Active as track coach and Boy Scout Master, and deep- ly interested in the study of birds and his paintings them, he nevertheless gave much of his valuable ti the Senior Class. THE VOYAGE We sail forth upon the sea of life Our journey's just begun. Before us now we glimpse our goal As we have never done. We venture forth and fear no fears. The torch is still held high. We hear the distant millions chant. “Do not let it diel To you we toss the burning fire Of Freedom and her cause. Let not the lamp burn low For fear that we shall pause. Sail on across the sea of life And keep our ship still strong. That we may live and love and die And feel no fears for long.” by Jackie Bunce MEMORIES How old mem'ries linger through all times and places! Looking backward we can see dear familiar faces. Precious mem'ries ne'er forgot make the present glorious; Who cares what the future holds? Who cares what's before us? Yes, we do care. Who could help it? No, not we! No one’s tranquil; no one’s happy; Is there one carefree? Young men hasten o’er the ocean; Heed the call of war! Girls whose men have left them Linger by the closing door. Love and laughter? Not just mem‘ries, No, indeed. Warm hearth fires and happy faces friends we need. All of these are now before us; these and many more. Face the future, then, with courage. Open wide the door. Homely tasks await us. Maybe cooking, sewing; such— Lives of service as await us may not seem so much. Doctors, lawyers, some among us go to higher fields. There’s no doubt that we'll be needed. This the future yields. by Betty Jean Dexter SERVICE BOYS of Class of ’45 Robert Max Balsdon ames Glas Bennett erry N. Bowman oe E. Brooks Howell B. UNDERSTUDIES Ali First Semester President Second Semester President John Mallory Shively Foster The Junior class has had a very busy year. First on the calendar was the selection of class rings. At the carnival they spent much time in preparing a very attractive booth. This last semester the class presented the annual Junior play, a comedy entitled “Every Family Has One.” The school year concluded with the formal Prom, the dance honor- ing the graduating class. Morgan Runs Back Merced’s Punt The Annual Football Banquet For the first time since 1942 the Madera Union High School was represented on the gridiron. Since the team was prob- ably the most inexperienced ever to rep- resent Madera, and as the turn-out of players was comparatively small, the coaching staff, composed of Ed Atkinson and Al Hawbecker, who were coaching football for the first time, did not antici- pate any great number of victories. Al- though at the end of the season our rec- ord of games won and lost was not alto- gether favorable, the boys, using the wide open game, displayed in all the games a great deal of enthusiasm and always showed the Madera fans a fighting team if not a victorious one. pe Asst. This year, however, Coach Atkinson resurrected it and organized a baseball team. J. O'Meara goes out swinging It was the first baseball team to be organized at Ma- dera High since 1941. Although the team was made up of green material, the coach readily recognized the possibilities as po- tential baseball players in those who turned out for practice and soon had his team in good shape. Games were scheduled with many schools and al- though an outstanding, successful year was not antici- pated in this sport, Madera High was proud of its new baseball nine. Deibert VARSITY BASKETBALL The Madera Union High School Varsity basketball team for the past season was composed of several veteran varsity play- ers and a few who had come up from the Flashy’ B squad of the previous year. Coach Ed Atkinson again trained the var- sity squad. Regardless of what material he has, Coach Atkinson always manages to shape up a team that is good competi- tion with the other league teams. Several years he has turned out championship teams, and in 1938 produced one of the best basketball teams Madera has ever had. A. Freeman Although Madera was winner of only one league game thé boys always played a fast, heads-up game and on more than one occasion brought the Madera fans to their feet with spectacular plays. After so favorable a perform- ance your directors could not but be burst- ing with second hand glory. | Truly, the first two acts were something of a [ disappointment. The lights were dim; you were slow on the pick- up; and on several oc- casions the shadows under your eyes were noticeably heavy, but with the start of the third act, you began to make the most of your possibilities. There was originality in your in- re terpretations and vari- L. C. Thompson, Principal ety in your characteri- zations. The worry lines left your foreheads, your cues were picked up while the romantic performers showed the enthusiasm of the Barrymores, and,as you approached the climax of the mystery, you displayed that poise and calm assurance which one develops only through prac- | tice and experience. To us who assisted you those three curtain-calls at the end—senior tea, baccalaureate j and commencement—were an indication of public enjoyment and approval. Approval will always be the spring tonic for bigger and more challenging roles. However, there are so many and important roles awaitiny you that you will have little time to bask in the floodlight of past glories. Best wishes in all of thesel Mary Jardine H. A.
