The class of 1952 has gone on with this good government, has added much to it, making this a very rare year in the history of the school. The school has been in such good shape that we have had time to enjoy each other, which is saying much. I can't help but say, Haven't we had a good time together. And this is because we have had time to have a good time being together. Lucy Madeira Wing V...-A F P L rr' P s I 4, LUCY MADEIRA WING i' IQQN 91-mf I-'Ak . . jg . O W4 aff' Vw. Shar E Q. 764 S Glam All sophomores report to the gym immediately to set up church! How many times we've heard that cry echoing down the halls on Sunday afternoons, followed by the inevitable anguished reply, But we did it last week! Usually we've wanted to throttle the entire class for disturb- ing our valiant attempts to study, but as the end of the year approaches we begin to realize how we'll miss the bedlam when we're gone. Along with their remarkable capacity for making noise, the sopho- mores have been equally outstanding in every other field. They first began to show their stuff in athletics when Tolie, Lyn, Kitty, and Julie all made the hockey squad. At the same time Sharon and Sue, the sophomore members of first riding team, were wearing out their boots trudging to and from the stables. With the advent of basketball season, Kitty and Tolie were again right up in front on squad, along with Bev and Connie Fisher. After such a beginning, the school is looking forward to seeing the sophomores really go to town. with tennis racquets and softballs this spring, as well as to counting the ribbons Sharon and Sue collect in the Intercollegiate Horse Show. Along artistic lines the sophomores have been just as successful. The inhabitants of Second Floor Main, at least, can testify to their musical proficiency, having been constant listeners either to Anne Morris playing the piano downstairs, or to Drew and Ellen strumming away on their ukes just overhead. And we were very pleasantly surprised at the first recital to find we have a flutist in Kitty Ohl! In the Art Studio is fur- ther evidence of artistic ability-Elsie, Aldis, Punkin, and Nellie are only a few of those who are adept at wielding a paint brush. The real proof of talent, however, came on the eighth of March, when the sophomore class gave the rest of the school a passport to Paris. We can't say enough about that wonderful party-Sharon's clever script and songs, Bev's dances, or the realistic backdrop painted by Anne Morris, Suzette, and Reni, to mention a few. We never knew Connie Fisher, Celia Faulkner, Ceci Lombard, and Kitty Ohl were such excellent actresses, and, of course, we mustn't forget Tolie's singing, Pris Kenney's lovely costume, or Nellie's now-famous, Looking at ze diamond is not always- how you say ?-stealing eet ! Then there is that large group of geniuses-or is it geniae, Miss Baker ?-who complain of a 90 on the last Latin test. Rise, day girls, and take a bow. What? someone's missing? Oh, it's just Sonny, who seems to be at St. Paul's. Aside from their amazing success in everything they undertake, the sophomores are famous for a few more things. We wonder if Barbie Nixon's room will be filled with roses on the first day of school for the next two years. Some- people have all the luck! Mary, did you ever get that harmony lesson in on time? And what's this passion for racing cars, Reni? Of course we breed Bulgarian wolfhounds in Texas! We have everything in Texas! Surely you don't need to- be told that Lee's just around the corner. We'll never forget the momentous day when her hair was cut! We always seem to see Gail Shaw accompanied by sev- ral sailors on Sundays-and we hope that Chrissie will get that overdue letter from John, so the rest of us can get some sleep! I just know there's something wrong with that post-office! On the whole, sophomores, we think you have a pretty terrific class. It won't be long before you'll be taking long weekends, and alarm clocks in study-hall will be a thing of the past. You have a lot to look forward to, but a lot to look back on as well. So don't hurry too much as you set up church these last few Sundays. This year has been merely a sliver of time that has slipped by almost without being noticed, but you'll re- member it as one of the best. It seemed only a few days before they had developed that perennial difficulty of all Maderia students-you know what we mean-getting to bed on time at night and getting to breakfast before the second bell in the morning. Just like the rest of us, they began haunting the bell-maid's office on weekends, and wonder- ing why the proctor was giving them such -a dirty look. After all, the freshmen are such innocent little things! However, we soon discovered that they didn't spend all their time thinking frivolous thoughts, for they turned out to be quite a talented class. For instance, there were those two whizzes at hockey, Mary Kuhn and Betsy Gilmor, who ended up on squad. Then dramatic talent was revealed when they gave the Christmas play. Nan Robinson, as Zachrey, and Barbara Knight and Betsy, as the children, really wowed us! The freshmen proved to be more and more athletic, for we learned that Mary was a really terrific tennis player, while Sheila Stoddard and Sally Perkins were among the riding fiends, with Sheila making the Intercollegiate Horse Show team. As a matter of fact, all those day girls seem to be pretty proficient horsewomen-we can't forget Debby Owen on Acorn in the drill, or Mariamne Dodek's chic black breeches! Along the administrative lines, we were not at all surprised to learn that Elenita Milbank had been elected president of the class, and Jane Casey, secretary. Janie Slemp and Nan proved to be budding pianists, and, on the lighter side, Gail Grant became noted for her sophistication, and Chachie Vincent and Jean Shevlin for what appeared to be a contest to see who could cut her hair the shorter. The freshmen appear, all in all, to be a very promising class, and we hope We won't sound too trite if we wish them lots of luck in the three years to come. W L M Wm' i ' W 0 As soon as the familiar clink of knives against glasses has subsided, we'd like to say a few words. No, we aren't announcing another meeting, but meetings are connected with our subject-the Madeira organizations. In our opinion, the various clubs have been unusually active and interest- ing this year. A great deal of the credit must go to the officers, whose ideas and initiative have led the way, but most of the year's success has bien due to the enthusiasm and cooperation that the entire school has s own. The most important organizations are the two Student Government Associations, on which nearly all the discipline of the school is based. Mimi and Janet, with their fellow officers, have done a fine job of main- taining last year's high level and keeping us all under control, a task often anything but easy-especially during second study-hall! Student Government has earned our respect and gratitude this year by making the school a better place for everyone. Is there anyone who isn't familiar with School Welfare? One of the Board always seems to be on the scene with outstretched palm, just when we're saving our pennies for that big weekend. If we've been rather un- cooperative about writing checks at such times, however, it's not because we haven't been aware of the good work Social Welfare does by con- tributing to so many worthy causes. One of the worthiest of those causes, naturally, has been Fruit Closet. We don't know whether it brought any profits to Social Welfare this year, but it has brought a few added pounds to most of us, which we would willingly donate to any poor starving Armenians if Thayer could arrange it. The Board proved that its abilities are not limited to collecting money in its annual party. Robin Hoodsky and his Comrades put distribution of wealth in such a favorable light that we'd gladly join the fun if we only had some wealth to distribute. This year the Affairs and AEiliations Committee, formerly part of Social Welfare, was made a separate organization under Kitty Jarvis and Diana Marsh. Kitty and Swamp have kept up a lively correspondence with our affiliated school in Germany, and have been responsible for starting many new friendships between Madeira girls and students at the Schule Schloss Salem. At Christmas the Committee collaborated with the Early Morning Carolers to record a group of carols as a gift for the German school, and we were very impressed with the almost professional resu ts. Aside from recording carols, the Glee Clubs have been so active this year that we may have to use Morse Code to get everything in. In spite of a minor blizzard, they presented two successful performances of the Carol Service at Christmas, and during winter term they sang the score of The Mikado in long assembly, to the great amusement and enjoy- ment of the rest of the school. At the beginning of April we gave our own voices a rest and let the Johns Hopkins University Glee Club do the singing. After a marvelous concert there was dancing for the young men and the seniors-and the equally fascinating occupation of watching from windows for underclassmenl The Glee Clubs entertained again dur- ing spring term, and ended the year with some excellent singing at Senior Vespers. The Dramatic Club, under the able direction of Jane Richards, has produced three plays this year. In November it gave the blood-curdling Monkey's Paw , followed by a hilarious short play Consolation , and in May the members presented their three-act play, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay. We now realize that the movie was hopelessly mis- cast-Hollywood should have called on Ansco, Marka, and Jane! Re- hearsals may have been hectic, but the result was definitely a hit . Music hath charms, they say, and we can't help agreeing, because the Music Club has charmed many of us into completely forgetting our Weekend assignments with its Friday evening record sessions. After a rugged week nothing could be pleasanter than to relax in the library and listen to good music! The piano students have also given three excellent recitals, and for those who want more than Madeira talent, there are always concerts in Washington. The Art Club members have produced some fine paintings this year, despite the frequent disappearance of edible portions of still-lifes. In the fall several girls had pictures shown in a county exhibit, and since then Mrs. Weaver has taken her students to galleries and lectures in town, as well as on several wonderful sketching trips. The art exhibit at the end of the year was ample evidence of all that these artists have accomplished. We might add that our photographer was particularly impressed by the Art Club-though whether the impression came before or after he sat on a palette, we aren't quite sure! For those who like pictures, but not paint, there is the Camera Club. Oflicers Georgia and Easy conducted two contests this year, with prizes for the prettiest, funniest, and most-typical-of-school-life pictures, and enthusiasm reached such a peak that one sophomore nearly fell out of a window in her overwhelming desire to get that shot. The Compass has taken a new lease on life with Anne Fitch as its editor. Despite the handicap of having the material frequently lost some- where between Fitchie and the printer, the Board has put out five lively editions, with Loie's clever illustrations adding an amusing new touch. The Compass did not give its annual party because of a surplus in its treasury, but the Yearbook's Universal Rangers , who were less com- fortably off, took the school through time and space in its search for the vicious Wheezlesnatcher . After October the actions of the Yearbook Board were shrouded in secrecy, however, those wishing to write any member this summer may send their letters to the Sunnyside Rest and Convalescent Home. As usual, athletics flourished at Madeira this year. With our long- dreamed-of stables at last a reality, and another undefeated hockey sea- son on our record, neither flu nor bad weather have succeeded in destroy- ing our fun, and the Athletic Association has furthered inter-school re- lations by meeting with A. A. officers from other schools. And for those who want nothing more vigorous than a brisk walk, followed by a good meal, the Outing Club has fulfilled their every need with weekly hikes and cook-outs at the Point or Cabin. A glance at the club picture will show the extent of its popularity! If we only had time we could go on indefinitely about each organiza- tion, but, unfortunately, we have to run. Therels a meeting at 7:00 and a rehearsal at 9:00, which means we'll have to memorize our parts in the play during study-hall. If there's any time, it's a good idea to glance at an assignment now and then, but take our word for it-the Madeira organizations are so interesting and so much fun that you simply can't afford to miss a thing!
