However, as a supple- Ulik' ment to this none too cheerful outlook, September also brought the l,2,Qlvleerful class of '53 to Madeira. The girls of this class spent the first A art of the year getting acquainted with the school and with each other. oon they were as much a part of Madeira as the older girls. Several VYXE-fo' of them even began to make names for themselves. Ann Spicer and innie Adams became the Misses Comic Books in Study Hall and allie C'Texas J Dewar made sure everyone knew where she came from. p-U,-was wie house girls as well as the day girls got to know Ceci Dixon, since ' s e lived in the iniirmary part of winter term. Jenny Lee's dramatic ability was recognized in her amazing portrayal of the small boy in Happy Journey . Maria Grasselli was acknowleged as one of the seven wonders of Madeira because of her fluency in every language from German to Pig Latin, and the whole school was overwhelmed by tales of Nancy Ball's and Anne Howe's fabulous grades. The athletic prowess of Carol Funkhouser and Poppy Hamlin began to come to light, as did the beauty of Ceres, Sukie a11d Joan Harjes. Then came the acid test of all freshmen, the Christmas play, which the class of '53 performed admirably. Priscilla Woods made a very convincing Zachary, and it would be hard to forget Hilles and Gay as the two little children. So good were those two, in fact, that everyone was glad to find them together again as Frankie and Johnny in the Fresh- man skit. More talent was displayed in the skit through Dangerous Dan Magrew sung by Susan Alexander, Betty Heap, Priscilla Woods and Deette Pierson. Jenny Molloy showed us some mighty tricky Hungarian dancing, and her roommate Wickie proved that there's more than one talented Cheatham. Speaking of talent, it's been rumored that Jane Humphreys is also quite the dancer. And so in view of past performances, we are sure these Freshmen are headed for a great future. They certainly have the brains, brawn, beauty and talent to be a really great class! 'hu We v t a Q52 ' xi? w ill xg ,. - 4? Wx 1 I fm If ' W ' if X XW X! M YJ fi ' ' - ,, In N , Pj L? Did you know that there's a certain class at Madeira known as the Sophomores CPic. 31 who are the friendliest, noisiest, cutest girls in the School? And that last fall they gave the very first Sophomore dance in the living room at which various Episcopal boys were regally enter- tained? Furthermore, in February they gave one of the best parties anyone has ever seen. We are all so glad that Jack QPic. 171 and Jill fPic. 141 and their pail are back together again!! Have you heard about Floor Main, and all the fun they have? fPic. 201 Did you know that Luvie Moore, fPic. 121 Kitty Jarvis, QPic. 161 Julie Brenton, and Elbel fPic. 241 all raise ---- up there? And that the floor also contains various belles such as Anne Lindsay, CPic. 4 and Whiskey CPic.71. Whew! One night they all came to study hall bedecked with pigtails fPic. 101, and, as if that wasn't enough, the next week all of them cut bangs! All of them, that is, but Diana Marsh who could never be persuaded to part with her lengthly tresses . . . and who can blame her? But not all Third Floor Mainers are insane! In fact we've heard that Ellie Brown and Emmy Champion are tops in every class. We wonder how they do it in such an environment! And Main is not the only house that has a Sophomore floor. No one could ever forget this year's Third floor East fPic. 81 and its six noteworthy inhabitants. At any rate, they are certainly easily heard as far as their harmonized C?1 singing goes. Have you guessed that the class of '52 possesses quite a quantity of talent? Many of them are athletic. Take Julie Arnold for example who promises to be the mainstay of the White Team. And if you've never seen Dee Dort ice skate or Nina Stewart ride, you've really missed a lot. Of course Kay-Kay Marshall and Susie Maconochie could hardly be called bench warmers! But the hockey field and the basketball court aren't the only places where their ability shines forth. Musically these Sopho- mores more than make the grade with Pam Satley fPic. 51 at the piano Judy Roach with her accordian and Eileen Fahnstock with her uke. They have more than enough talent to start a band. Pam D'Arcy would make quite a vocalist, while Barry and Daphne fPic. 181 could entertain with their dancing. And as far as art goes, the scenery of the Freshman- Sophomore party was proof in itself that Palmer fPic. 131 knows her business. Is there any doubt that the Sophomores aren't just as miraculous outside of school as in it? Not after listening to Sallie Bromley and Lois Cowles fPic. 151 talk there isn't. And Lufkin isn't such a slow town either, is it Bevo? Wendy Hoar and Gillian Akroid each have devine English accents, and.we'd hate to run competition with Ulvia's exotic Egyptian personality. Getting back to the U.S., Nancy Blair's stories of Warren are rivaled only by Barbara Babcock's CPic. 11 fascinating tales about Winston-Salem. We know that the day girls must have fun. Beth Scherer's dance last fall sure proved that. And June Hellman, Georgia E131 Harwood fPic. 61 and Scherl Anderson are probably sensational with their gorgeous blond hair. Lolly Goodrich is always up to something eziciting, as is very easily seen QPic. 111. Anne Rhoades provides the class with a really Tropical Southern accent. Anne Fitch and Patty Maslon fPic. 211 remind us of the song Five Foot Two fOr are they even that tall?1. Trina Seipp always looks like she had just stepped out of Vogue, While Mimi Van Buren used to cut quite a figure even in her Brearley uniform 1Pic. 21. Is there still anyone who doesn't think that this class, led by Thayer Bodman and Betsy Richmond isn't one of the best? There isn't? We just wanted to,make sie? D Q ca if? A K 1 ,.,.
