Then he recalled Nancy Townsend, frail as a column of smoke, and the rest of the Eastern contingent. There passed through his memory Jo Ann John and Monkey on horseback, Paula cutting her hair, and Ann May recognized by that laugh. He remembered Jeanie's eighteen inch waist, Ruthie's passion for lipsticks, and El1en's beautiful hair. A Dresden figure with dancing toes, Joan, skipped through his mind's eye. She was followed by Tracy of the merry heart and cheerful countenance, and Sally M. singing God Save The King. He seemed to hear Jenni's shouts of Have you gotten the paper yet? and Janet's North Carolina drawl. Again he laughed, this time at Hazel's everlasting humor and innocent ain't misbehavingi' From the West came another procession, led by Glazie surrounded by cocktails of all sorts. The parade moved swiftly on. He saw Mignon typ- ing madly to her eight pen-pals. Sally torn between her horse and her piano, Jeannie talking wildly about Princeton, and the most Western of them all, Gail, with Texas around her neck. ' Other scenes that had continued day by day came to Toad's mind. He remembered C. C. Collins in her station wagon, accompanied by Jo Bogley with her tennis racquet, then Elizabeth, Consuelo and Jennifer eating lunch in the day locker room, Patsy of the drooping eyelids help- ing Mary find her lost week ends, Jackie playing bridge, Barbara happy on Steve or sulking on Umber, Betty, one of the favored few with the perfect weight, and Nancy just back from France. And still more pas- sed by! With curly hair and Frankly speaking, in swept Eleanor with Mary Flo in her good looking clothes and Sue being athletic. As the willows were casting long shadows on the road, Mr. Toad tore himself regretfully away from his memories. But he knew that they had almost reached the end of the road, the rings had been fitted and the Club House was waiting to greet them with open arms. - ,,- v- -- ..NA .,' s - I , , - . , ,' Q 4 - 8 I 4 .. .msgs - ' . f '.,:,,,,.,- V - , Q , f f
