was working out the measurements of the pine grove where the enter- tainment was to be held. With a pink bow in her hair and a you all on her lips, Peggy Ann came to help. Bea and Fifi were up on ladders, fFifi almost falling off, she was laughing so hard! pinning crepe paper to the trees. They asked Sandy to help, but she said she had to go graze Missie. In the middle of it all Iris was fastening on her beard and prac- ticing swinging her gavel. Mr. Mole wanted to stay and see the party, but the Badger said they had to leave, and so they regretfully moved on, almost bumping into Buddy Rose, who was going over her extemp on cats. Next they met Carol who, curious as ever, asked them if they were lost. On telling her they weren't quite sure, Lizie quietly took them by the hands and said she would show them the way. She took them through the field where Fairfax and Didi were riding, past the spring where Penny was lending her cheerful ear to Peggy's worrying about her grades, and by the copse Allen and Darcy were doing homework CDarcy with that famous hat pulled over her eyesl. They met Margo in her scout uniform listening to Mimi, who was rolling her big brown eyes and talking fast. As they reached the outskirts of the Wild Wood they saw Katie, running to catch the bus bringing Anne Johnson back from her week end at Shipley and Julie back from Annapolis. ' Mr. Mole turned to Lizie and thanked her for the lovely walk. He said he was so glad to have met all the inhabitants of the Wild Wood, and couldn't wait to visit them all again. The animals who lived in the thick underbrush, the yawning caves where they held secret meetings, now were old friends, no longer to be feared. One evening Peggy greeted them with even more enthusiasm than usual, since it was a big evening for the animals. Even from the edge of the wood they could hear Judy B. and Waring hard at work on the pianos, and as they penetrated the thicket they saw Janie at another piano composing lyrics, and heard Pam singing her sweetest. A few more steps brought them face to face with a taxi, and Peggy explained that it was dropping her and Sandy York at Episcopal, and then taking Adrian and Audrey to U. V. A. Cinnie and Gay rode up to the taxi on horses to wave goodbye, and Cinnie, on seeing the mole, proudly showed him her horse's hide. For some reason it had a peculiar freckled look! A ball just missed the Toad's head, and Peanut and Keecy followed close behind. Keecy explained that her hands were just too encumbered with rings to catch it. A crowd had gathered a little farther in the wood, and after pushing through the Thoms' riding boots and basket balls, they saw Debbie doing a can-can. Two string bean figures ran among the trees: by the streak in the hair of one of them they recognized Ickie, and the long grey jacket on the other bespoke Jan Pirie. As the Mole and the Badger moved on, they saw Ann S., slender, tender and tall, sitting on a tree with Judy, who was preening her shining locks. Behind the next tree they spied Nancy Rutherford muttering I must, I must, I must. Now they were entering the thickest part 'of the wood, and they could see Judy S. getting everything organized for the party that night. Clurie was busy painting and Mitzie, who had cut her hand while bring- ing the Food in, was being fixed by Dr. Wagley. Sukie, as the class brain, ' I +vzf131f.w CSMM
