Clwayfarers 311 The Wayfaring Rat watched his band mill about him as they pre- pared for the long journey ahead. How different they seemed from the strangers who, eight months before, had first landed there from differ- ent and far off places. The rolling hills, the mighty river, the lane of dogwood, the pranks they had played and the parties they had given, all had left their stamp upon them and made them into a jolly close- knit band. Lets go, cried the Wayfaring Rat, Ccommonly known as ThayerJ, I've opened the windows and turned off the radiators for the last time, now let's leave. And off they started, singing merrily! M. F. had to run back to get her red lisles, which she had forgotten, but her pixie grin was soon back again. Mary Means, well stocked with movie maga- zines for the trip, listened to Cinnie tell tales of Mexico and Tyrone. Behind them were Pam and Ulvia, going over their parts as Mary and Joseph in the Christmas play to pass the time. The Rat heard shrieks in the vanguard, Libby's shrill giggle above the rest. Since it was only Beth, who had spied a cute man on the street, and Palmer, who was being a gorilla girl, he continued leading the way. As they passed a field, June saw a horse that looked just like Lucky, so with a toss of her hair she was upon him and away. The Wayfaring Rat thought the field was as good a place as any to have lunch. Susie lent her White Team banner as a tablecloth, and the meal began. Patsy, who just couldn't eat a thing, sat and talked with Weedie about the Cleve- land Indians, until Weedie decided to look for Roger the Lodgerf' Betsy, worn out from carrying her large wardrobe, lay on the ground near them with Barbara, who was writing a letter. Hopping around them was Dee, whose ankle was feeling the effects of being sprained once too often while skating. Joanna looked down the table and sighed, Just think, no more busses to miss till September. Sally and Trina, who had been reminiscing about the horse show, soon decided it was time to go. Nancy relayed this proposal to the Rat in her best announcer's voice and the idea was approved. Bibo started tolwash the dishes and, because they all loved her, everyone rushed to he p. Soon they were all on their way again. As they trooped into the horizon, the willows sighed among themselves, and settled eagerly to await the return of the Wayfarers in September. 0:1 9 24-
