How different they seemed from the strangers who, eight months before, had first landed there from differ- ent and far off places. The rolling hills, the mighty river, the lane of dogwood, the pranks they had played and the parties they had given, all had left their stamp upon them and made them into a jolly close- knit band. Lets go, cried the Wayfaring Rat, Ccommonly known as ThayerJ, I've opened the windows and turned off the radiators for the last time, now let's leave. And off they started, singing merrily! M. F. had to run back to get her red lisles, which she had forgotten, but her pixie grin was soon back again. Mary Means, well stocked with movie maga- zines for the trip, listened to Cinnie tell tales of Mexico and Tyrone. Behind them were Pam and Ulvia, going over their parts as Mary and Joseph in the Christmas play to pass the time. The Rat heard shrieks in the vanguard, Libby's shrill giggle above the rest. Since it was only Beth, who had spied a cute man on the street, and Palmer, who was being a gorilla girl, he continued leading the way. As they passed a field, June saw a horse that looked just like Lucky, so with a toss of her hair she was upon him and away. The Wayfaring Rat thought the field was as good a place as any to have lunch. Susie lent her White Team banner as a tablecloth, and the meal began. Patsy, who just couldn't eat a thing, sat and talked with Weedie about the Cleve- land Indians, until Weedie decided to look for Roger the Lodgerf' Betsy, worn out from carrying her large wardrobe, lay on the ground near them with Barbara, who was writing a letter. Hopping around them was Dee, whose ankle was feeling the effects of being sprained once too often while skating. Joanna looked down the table and sighed, Just think, no more busses to miss till September. Sally and Trina, who had been reminiscing about the horse show, soon decided it was time to go. Nancy relayed this proposal to the Rat in her best announcer's voice and the idea was approved. Bibo started tolwash the dishes and, because they all loved her, everyone rushed to he p. Soon they were all on their way again. As they trooped into the horizon, the willows sighed among themselves, and settled eagerly to await the return of the Wayfarers in September. 0:1 9 24- if 'P fb, ' 1 s 0 . s- ll. b N L4 6 , s x 1 r ..r .,. , a ' 4 r ,- gi .D -4' 5 K' C LQ 1 xii! The animals who lived in the thick underbrush, the yawning caves where they held secret meetings, now were old friends, no longer to be feared. One evening Peggy greeted them with even more enthusiasm than usual, since it was a big evening for the animals. Even from the edge of the wood they could hear Judy B. and Waring hard at work on the pianos, and as they penetrated the thicket they saw Janie at another piano composing lyrics, and heard Pam singing her sweetest. A few more steps brought them face to face with a taxi, and Peggy explained that it was dropping her and Sandy York at Episcopal, and then taking Adrian and Audrey to U. V. A. Cinnie and Gay rode up to the taxi on horses to wave goodbye, and Cinnie, on seeing the mole, proudly showed him her horse's hide. For some reason it had a peculiar freckled look! A ball just missed the Toad's head, and Peanut and Keecy followed close behind. Keecy explained that her hands were just too encumbered with rings to catch it. A crowd had gathered a little farther in the wood, and after pushing through the Thoms' riding boots and basket balls, they saw Debbie doing a can-can. Two string bean figures ran among the trees: by the streak in the hair of one of them they recognized Ickie, and the long grey jacket on the other bespoke Jan Pirie. As the Mole and the Badger moved on, they saw Ann S., slender, tender and tall, sitting on a tree with Judy, who was preening her shining locks. Behind the next tree they spied Nancy Rutherford muttering I must, I must, I must. Now they were entering the thickest part 'of the wood, and they could see Judy S. getting everything organized for the party that night. Clurie was busy painting and Mitzie, who had cut her hand while bring- ing the Food in, was being fixed by Dr. Wagley. Sukie, as the class brain, ' I +vzf131f.w CSMM was working out the measurements of the pine grove where the enter- tainment was to be held. With a pink bow in her hair and a you all on her lips, Peggy Ann came to help. Bea and Fifi were up on ladders, fFifi almost falling off, she was laughing so hard! pinning crepe paper to the trees. They asked Sandy to help, but she said she had to go graze Missie. In the middle of it all Iris was fastening on her beard and prac- ticing swinging her gavel. Mr. Mole wanted to stay and see the party, but the Badger said they had to leave, and so they regretfully moved on, almost bumping into Buddy Rose, who was going over her extemp on cats. Next they met Carol who, curious as ever, asked them if they were lost. On telling her they weren't quite sure, Lizie quietly took them by the hands and said she would show them the way. She took them through the field where Fairfax and Didi were riding, past the spring where Penny was lending her cheerful ear to Peggy's worrying about her grades, and by the copse Allen and Darcy were doing homework CDarcy with that famous hat pulled over her eyesl. They met Margo in her scout uniform listening to Mimi, who was rolling her big brown eyes and talking fast. As they reached the outskirts of the Wild Wood they saw Katie, running to catch the bus bringing Anne Johnson back from her week end at Shipley and Julie back from Annapolis. ' Mr. Mole turned to Lizie and thanked her for the lovely walk. He said he was so glad to have met all the inhabitants of the Wild Wood, and couldn't wait to visit them all again. Such a rich chapter it had been, when one looked back on it all! 5 His recollections were so numerous and so very highly colored! The 1,4141- pageant of the open road had marched steadily along, unfolding itself LBVQ in pictures that followed each other in stately succession. If- .Lj.A.,:,-, He thought of the travellers from Maing such a jolly bunch theymaf had been! He remembered Bug-what a S. A. A lar C1273 Clgigrl reminded him of Peggy, singing in the bath tub, accompanied by the ' Li ' rustle of pages in the corner john- just Fents, recuperating from all her N O' IYYNU generosity. And last but not least came Dodo, picking up gossip, and otbsxbrnmcf Bushby, running to get invtraining for her sixth first team. The next caravan he remembered was from th North' in itlhad .ues been flawless Judy, Pat and Knobby ts after lights out, andsz Peggy whipping up a reindeer sweater in five minutes. With a chuckle D040 pqvn-L., Toad recalled Miss Ota Helen Fry-Hitchie, that is. Then there were AQ. Millie with her B. Then he recalled Nancy Townsend, frail as a column of smoke, and the rest of the Eastern contingent. There passed through his memory Jo Ann John and Monkey on horseback, Paula cutting her hair, and Ann May recognized by that laugh. He remembered Jeanie's eighteen inch waist, Ruthie's passion for lipsticks, and El1en's beautiful hair. A Dresden figure with dancing toes, Joan, skipped through his mind's eye. She was followed by Tracy of the merry heart and cheerful countenance, and Sally M. singing God Save The King. He seemed to hear Jenni's shouts of Have you gotten the paper yet? and Janet's North Carolina drawl. Again he laughed, this time at Hazel's everlasting humor and innocent ain't misbehavingi' From the West came another procession, led by Glazie surrounded by cocktails of all sorts. The parade moved swiftly on. He saw Mignon typ- ing madly to her eight pen-pals. Sally torn between her horse and her piano, Jeannie talking wildly about Princeton, and the most Western of them all, Gail, with Texas around her neck. ' Other scenes that had continued day by day came to Toad's mind. He remembered C. C. Collins in her station wagon, accompanied by Jo Bogley with her tennis racquet, then Elizabeth, Consuelo and Jennifer eating lunch in the day locker room, Patsy of the drooping eyelids help- ing Mary find her lost week ends, Jackie playing bridge, Barbara happy on Steve or sulking on Umber, Betty, one of the favored few with the perfect weight, and Nancy just back from France. And still more pas- sed by! With curly hair and Frankly speaking, in swept Eleanor with Mary Flo in her good looking clothes and Sue being athletic. As the willows were casting long shadows on the road, Mr. Toad tore himself regretfully away from his memories. But he knew that they had almost reached the end of the road, the rings had been fitted and the Club House was waiting to greet them with open arms. - ,,- v- -- ..NA .,' s - I , , - . , ,' Q 4 - 8 I 4 .. .msgs - ' . f '.,:,,,,.,- V - , Q , f f AfJN S Qfwf-fb ef J NN A + 5 X Q' kmWg4fZx 7 4 ff I1 X QQ X V Q! 4d :Xfqf M Q ?Nf:3lv 9 Q DD gf-gfx ,VL I 0 xx M X '- i fl 05 A iw, q 9 9 0 Xgfo pq 0 0 CI IL' I ca 0 V,L- q f ' J N N A0 Q Q 9 N. Most of them have expanded both in member- ship and in activity, and all of them have added a lot to the life of the school. Student Government, led by Dottie Ball, has done an admirable job in a hard year. With the aid of the Proctors and the Class Representa- tives, they have kept a firm and steady hand over the natural exuberance of us all. The Social Welfare Society broadened their field by joining with the Affairs and Affiliations Committee. They sent boxes and equipment to their sister school in Germany, and also donated to all the regular causes in America. They earned a lot of money by the excellent party Mary Elliott gave. . The Glee Clubs have outdone themselves this year. They gave an exceptionally good concert at Christmas and a never-to-be-forgotten Operetta in May. Congratulations are due to Ann Cook for such a suc- cessful Club. The Music Club has had more talent than ever, every con- cert abounded in practically genius. The Dramatic also has had an outstanding year. With Elaine Grasselli as director, the club amused the school with The Prince Of Domdometer, and mystified them with Shall We Join The Ladies. Mean- while Lainie Chandler discovered and used new talent in Ou The Air and The Shoes. At the end of April, the Dramatic Club presented their piece de resistance Dear Brutus, which was well worth all the effort put into it. The Camera Club has really come into its own. Katie Alexander stocked the darkroom with everything from an enlarger to enthusiasm and photographs were taken and developed in mass production. The Art Exibition in May was excellent proof of the fine work done in the Art Club. Miss Madeira bought several new pictures this year which helped increase the Club's library of paintings. The Compass was better than ever this lyear, thanks to Joan Bab- cock and the rest of the board, it came out twice as often, twice as well- written, and twice as amusing as ever before. The Yearbook Board, after giving a Halloween Party in the fall, went into hibernation and came out with-this! The great activity of the various organizations has made this year a full and busy one for everyone. ' i.. ' ,. S N: 1 , sg A 1 5 , , ' Q 5 ' l 3 N i ' A 'A' I 1 5 f L. 5 ' K 's f 2 . 6 , .
