A year ago we would have thought that many of our problems as a nation would be well on their way to a real settlement, but this is not true. Now we realize more than at any time in recorded history that men and women need trained minds with which to face the problems before the world, starvation in Europe, first of all, the rehabilitation of the bombed countries, the revival of education. How can we do these things? Here at the school, we are very proud of the class we are sending forth as the class of 1948. It has made the high- est record that any class has made since we came to live in the country 17 years ago. It has learned in a veryun- usual way what concentration and attention mean and what real thinking can bring about. We feel grateful to the girls of this class, and we send them forth with our love and our admiration. In every home there was wild confusion as harassed mothers and fathers gathered their older children into the awaiting carriages. The younger children stood on the steps and waved good-bye to their elders, wishing that they cduld go too. As soon as the carriages were out of sight, they forgot their disappointment and scat- tered to prepare for the picnic. Shouts of laughter were heard as the children came tumbling out of the houses and started down the road. Five minutes later a cry, Wait for me! reached them and they turned to see Ginny, half dressed, running down the road. She was late as usual. As soon as Ginny joined them, absent minded Kay disappearedg she had forgotten her undershirt. Above the excited voices, Sukie could be heard babbling endlessly. Penny was listening so attentively that she almost fell over a red Rose on the path ahead of her. Sandy groaned under the weight of all the nice books she had brought along to read. Julie, at the head of the group, picked out a pleasant spot by a brook, where they could eat their lunch. As they unpacked their picnic basket, Pam, in her haste, picked up a Peanut and stepped on a Brownie. While they were eating, Sandra, with her mouth full, launched into a long tale, but was constantly interrupted by Di Di. Sitting under a tree were Meg, Darcy, Peggy and Joyce, surrounded by men, even at that tender age. All at once a great splash was heard. There was Fairfax looking wet and woe- begone in the middle of the stream, declaring that she would never ride again. In their excitement they had failed to notice the black clouds above, but when the large drops began to fall they scrambled to gather up the picnic things. By mistake Katie stepped in a chocolate cake and blushed furiously when Adrian teased her by making faces. They picked up their' baskets and ran helter-shelter for home. It had been a grand day. A car drove up to the curb and an attractive woman stepped out. She looked around for a familiar face, and walked over to the box oflice, her eyes lit up with recognition. There t the window stood Martini trying to get in free on her diplomatic pass. he young woman touched her on the should'er and Martini turned quickl and said, Why, Sally Fishburn! It's been such a long time since I've s n you. What have you been doing? Oh! You can't imagine who I just s w-Joyce Howe getting in for half price. She always said there was a advantage in being small. T e two went in together laughing, and as Sally went down the aisle to her seat, she saw Katie and Brigham strategically placing themselves near contingent of sailors. To her amazement she found that her seat was i the same row with Sue and her baby . Sue told her that Stilly and L upie couldn't come tonight because Stilly had a Lab to make up and Loupi had missed her boat back from Hawaii. And then who should come walki down the aisle but Bobbie, shouting, Cigarettes, peanuts, butts, nuts. T e house lights dimmed and the curtain rose. There was Julie Ann addin the last touches to the scenery. As the play progressed Sally's head gan to nod and she got sleepier and! sleepier . . . and sleepier . . . U , up, heels over head through misty space. She was a little girl again! . . . All of a sudden she hit her head on the rainbow, just in time to see Franny sliding by on her way to the pot of Fifth Avenues at the botto . Stepping onto a cloud she pushed a button and off she flew! Bank- ing to the right Sally's eyes hit upon Peggy, surrounded by her Army brats, itting on a cloud that was slightly . . . damp, shall we say? Sud- denly he strains of heavenly music filled the air . . . Ludwig Von Lindsay was le ding the celestial choir in the Tiger Rag . Nancy brought up the rear i adly strumming her harp. Sally nearly fell off her cloud when she saw M ckall whizzing by on a soap bubble shouting to the world that some day t re would be a grasshopper for president . . . G rgle, crunch! Gurgle, crunch! Treman and Taylor were reclining on a pi k cotton-candy cloud . . . Jane was stuffing it in fast and furiously, while ally T. refreshed herself with a bottle of moonshine, as she tried to kee her halo from slipping over her left ear . . . Night fell and one by one the stars came out to play. There in the distance, Sally saw Davi shuffling down the Milky Way in her dead bedroom slippers. Around the corner of a cloud came a troop of small children chased by their devoted teacher, Miss Healey, who tried to keep them from leaving dirty foot- prints on the stars. The silence of the evening air was broken by the clangirg of a bell . . . Angels tumbled out from every cloud to line up for robe 'nspection . Inspector Howard reprimanded Griggs for having her riding loritches on under her robe. Sally stopped to take a drink from the E481 Big Dipper-and on the surface of the water she saw the reflection of Eula mounted on a cow, jump-ing over the moon . . . Whoosh!!--Margaret Grant's plane from California just flew by and knocked Sally off the handle . . . Down she slid on a moonbeam and waved good-bye to Poppy, who was busy knitting halo covers for her children. Down, down, head over heels through a great rocky hole into a subterranean cavern . . . Ker-thump! Sally sat up when she heard her name called. It was Crete, still taking roll. Custom's officer Wagner frisked Sally, but found only a little stardust in her pockets. She started to look around and saw in a dark, dark corner, Phil, sitting on a pile of books which she had to translate into Latin. Beside her was Joey developing her pictures. At last she had found a dark Dark Room. In a more brightly lighted corner Sally saw Mrs. Harriott Summerlin Understone following the fate of all chaperons as she was being stewed in a pot. Holden sat playing solitaire by the light of the fire, and thought fondly of her bridge- playing days. In the distance Ginger was turning every little stone to find five people for her birthday dinner. Dore screamed to her, Put those stones back or you'll uncover my fish carcasses! From the depths of the cavern came the agonized strains of Father, dear father, come home to me now . . . 'Twas Alice, of course . . . Then Sally leaned over to tie her shoe and Dani, practicing the can-can, kicked her by mistake. Poor Sally fell flat on her face. All at once she found herself lying in a cool greenfield in the country. She reached over to pick a flower, but alas-it was only a iiower on Janet's inevitable hat. Sally heard an awful noise coming from behind a bush . . . it was Keir howling with laughter at Diddie, who was going through the Anatole of Paris routine. With a squeal of delight she ran over to play in the shade of an apple tree . . . oops! An Appel slipped and fell out of it-Sally helped her get up. At that moment Liz came up and asked if Sally wouldn't please walk a little way with her because she didn't want to be seen alone. After leaving Liz, Sally kept on walking down the road . . . In a field nearby she saw Tucky playing ball and went up to 'say hello, Continuing on her way, Sally almost stepped on a sailboat which Molly was trying so hard to sail in a mud puddle. The road turned into a shady wood and' there was a little wooden bridge-but before she reach- ed the bridge Sally passed Signa ambling down the road with her gentle- manly dope,'. Beneath the bridge ran a sparkling stream. Sally thought it would be more fun to wade across than to walk, so she took off her shoes and stepped over on the slippery stones. To her surprise she saw Swannie seated on a stump looking very, very sad. She explained that she had winked once too often and she'd sprained her eyelash. On her way again, Sally felt a little lonely after leaving all these old friends . . . All of a sudden she saw a big smile and behind it was Lynn. Sally smiled too, and felt much better. Lynn clapped her hands with joy . . . Sally woke up with a start and was a little disappointed because it was only the applause of the audience that had awakened her. However, she was glad she had fallen asleep because she had enjoyed the dream much more than she would have enjoyed the play. fEndJ E491 Gluxllvhg uf iirrurs - Q EVEN! si x., . W 1. Q- - Lf, L. I introduces into the school a new type of activity, because it is an that he Yearbook would not be complete without mention of this H1 orga zation based on contact with the girls of a school in another country, under completely different conditions from those found at Madera. 'Ihe growing seriousness of the world situation has impressed every- one with the need for individual effort and decisive action, and perhaps no gr oup more than those of us who have lived through a war-disturbed adolescence, and who might live through a war-torn adulthood. Certainly there is no other age group which would be more involved in a war in the naar future. And so, recognizing the crying need for our own educa- tion iri current affairs, and the great opportunities for activity in them, an e couraginglv large number of girls ioined together to form the Affai U . . is and Affiliations Committee, under the leadership of Mignon Smith. 'llhe committee has already acted to fulfill its two-fold purpose: to acqui them to sp and SSCOH its eq to th with their will h but a bers re knowledge of world events, and to take some definite part in ,however small. Several speakers have been invited to the school 7 eak on various problems and to answer any questions which arise, e debate on a controversial subject has already been held Even on - . . more important has been the affiliation of The Madeira School with a clary school in Germany, through the efforts of our committee and uivalent in the other school. We have already sent personal letters 'e of the students who have expressed an interest in corresponding Oo . . . cis, we have mailed packages of school equipment to supplement limited stores: and best of all, we each feel that what we are doing ave positive results, not only in the rebirth of a misled generation, lso in our increased understanding of our responsibilities as mem- of a peaceful world. We sincerely hope that the Affairs and Affiliations Committee will beco tinue a permanent part of the school, and that it will meet with con- success.
