This somewhat ungodly hour can properly be said to mark the dawn of the Madeira day. At this time, approximately 50? of the popu- lation wakes to contemplate the horrid fact that lessons are as yet in a more or less embryonic condition. However, at this particular stage of the game, nothing constructive is done about it. Morpheus is suffered to reassert himself. CQuery: Why did we read Screen Romances hier soir?J Silence reigns .... a. m. The denizens of this noble institution are brought face to face with sordid reality: Big Ben, first he whispers, THEN HE SHOUTS! His whisper alone is quite quelquechose, and we may as well face the fact that he is severally permitted to shout himself hoarse. a. m. Then it is the brave man chooses, though we must confess that the otherwise rather unhealthy nobility of his, or rather her, action is perhaps adequately compensated by the banging of windows and other terrible, rending noises that accompany this momentous decision. We blush to admit that we incline to the cowardly school of thought. Rather than turn the other cheek, we turn aside, or, more aptly, turn over on the other side, and convince ourselves that nobody will know or care if we do not know about Unreal Conditions. a. m. A sound like a spirited game of croquet indicates that the heat is on for the day. This comes as more or less of a relief to those of us who do not fancy the interior of a frigidaire as our domicile. a, m. The bell-maid Ca sadist, we thinkj rings the bell with a great note of enthusiasm. A few souls rise, and Stagger to brush their teeth with an air of abstraction. We content ourself with a hollow groan .... a. m. A unanimous decision is reached that the hour has arrived when the plunge must be taken. Our roommate explains this fact to us with truly admirable patience, in much the same tones that one would use in dealing with a fractions child. Results are conspicuous by their absence. One Sixty-four hears much splashing and gurgling down the hall. One's more estimable friends are performing their ablutions like good citizens. We shudder slightly. 7:24 a. m. We are dragged forcibly from our trundle bed, and the fact that the 25 will ring any minute now is impressed upon our feeble mentality in terms calculated to dispel all doubt. 7:25 a. m. The 25 does ring, and finds us more or less in the state in which we made our Hrst bow to the orbis terrarum. There is a general exodus. Our roommate flashes us a look of concern, then one of disgust, then leaves us to our fate. We can find but one stocking, in spite of all our frantic rooting amongst cherished chattels, and we get into our yesterday's shirt back to front three times before we make our hurried exit. We have broken both shoelaces, and as we rush from the room we are still holding them. 7:30 a. m. The bell rings and finds us triumphant as we enter the dining room with leaps and bounds, somewhat quaint as to hair and visage, but still clutching the ends of shoelace in our feverish palm. 8:25 a. m. Study hall is announced by the beast in the belfry. We drag our bedspread over what looks like a map of the moon, kick three shoes under the bed, realize that the maid will find them and line them up in the middle of the floor where they will immediately accost the accusing eye of Mrs. Whiting, if she should happen to inspect, and think better of it. We lie on our stomach and go after them with another shoe, which we lose. We cram the whole works into a drawer, and depart, carrying our ink well upside down. Some well-meaning crony, hurrying to the school building, pauses to advise us of this fact as she hurtles past. We say unkind things. 8:30 a. m. Study hall. History is made, and monumental tasks are accom- plished in this brief interim. 9: 10 a. m. Classes begin. We utter a small prayer. ll:3O a. m. The question before the house: To go to bouillon, or to buy some paper Cthemej. To do both would be a physical impossibility. We're hungry, and we know someone who just got new theme paper yesterday .... Sixty-five 1:30 p. m. We rush lunchward complete with raincape and soured outlook on life. The weather is terrible--so is our state of mind. 2:00 p. m. We scramble over many pairs of feet and finally locategfaj our place, fbl our hymnal, and all to the tune of Here Comes the Bride. We wish it were the Dead March . . . The weather is inclement, but so is fate-someone is practising the Blue Danube. 2:15 p. m. We rush over to our mail box, butt a few people amidships in our eagerness, forget our combination, ward off with kicks and blows that un- fortunate soul whose box is under ours, and who has at least nine letters, scowl into our own receptacle, and snatch out our booty. Battling our way through the hall, we hear various squeals of delight. We examine our little hoard in comparative seclusion. We have snared an American Observer, a bill for 828.93 and a slip from the cleaners. 2:30 p .m. We sign lnclement on the Reg. with a flourish, then find to our dismay that the weather shows definite signs of clearing. 4:00 p. m. We return from sports, rather the worse for wear, and down three milkshakes in rapid succession. We stagger home, feeling a bit green. Someone is practising the Blue Danube. 4.50 p. m. We worry our way to roll call. Our white dress has no buttons. Bless the Arcade Sunshine Laundry. And little Audrey laughed, and laughed, and laughed. 5:00 p. m. Chem. lab. begins to work up to a crescendo. The little scientists are having themselves a whirl. 5 .15 p. m. Biology lab. is not to be outdone. A preserved frog is not, to our mind at least, even faintly comparable to Chanel No. 5. But then, we may be difficult to please. 6:50 p. m. Dinner. Of course we go to the wrong table, our dress comes apart, and we spill the soup. More fun. 8.00 p. m. More study hall. Were Strauss extant at this late date, we are sure he would commit hari-kiri on the spot. The B-flat seems to have gone the the way of all flesh, but there seems to be an F-sharp which we feel we cannot bear. Sixty-six 9:00 p. m. Crackers and milk for all. Our elbow is jabbed in a crucial moment. We choke, and are nearly annihilated by a friendly attempt to restore us to normal. We object to being pummeled, even in a spirit of jovial camaraderie, and say so in no uncertain terms. The individual in question seems a touch disgruntled. 9:25 p. m. The 25 rings, and We are suddenly conscious of the fact that We have not brushed our teeth, which causes us great concern. 9:30 p. m. We climb into bed. It feels even more like a map of the moon when we are in it. It probably all goes to prove that Crime Doesn't Pay, or something equally sinister. We are, however, in an unfortunate frame of mind. 10:00 p. m. Deciding to brush our teeth, We open the door at the same moment that at least seven other peoplevdecide to do the same. Result, a sprint. We win, by about three lengths .... We sneak back to bed, and turn off the alarm which we had carefully set. We keep our gaze averted While doing so, so that we'll fool ourselves into thinking we don't know what We're doing. We go to sleep and have terrible nightmares, which we no doubt richly deserve. M ary Dallas AST YEAR, when We laid the cornerstone of the new Sports Building, we had no idea how impossible it would some day seem that we could ever have done without it. The school budget is no longer in the red: as the maids' favourite mops no longer meet their end on the hard wooden floor of the platform. No more Inclement days. No more basketball on the outdoor platform in freezing Weather, with the subs all sitting on the sidelines huddled in rain-capes, teeth chattering like the traditional buzz-saw, and feet from which all feeling has long since departed. The Sports Building is Subs' Heaven . The fruit store with its milkshakes and sundaes plays havoc with those inclined to be a bit on the plump side: but the athletes in training are the bane of its existence because more than two ice creams absorbed in the course of a Week constitute a major crime in their careers. We had a glorious hockey season, finishing up our fourth consecutive undefeated year. The hockey banquet brought the season to a perfect close. Basketball, second only to hockey, Was taken up by an unusually large Eighty-Six group of good players. Our minor winter sports, soccer, and lacrosse, took a back seat, being eclipsed by skiing and skating. The zero weather and snow storms made the northern girls feel quite at home. The l'Suth'ners , however, declared that they had never seen so much snow, and unanimously stated their disapproval of same in tones admitting of no possible doubt. But even they were eventually lured outside, perhaps out of curiosity. The new dancing room caused a great deal of enthusiasm. Miss Grover had her hands full coaching her Tap and Natural classes for the recital. As a matter of fact, the dancing classes were more popular this year than ever before. The recent Astaire films have apparently awakened the latent hoofer in us, with varying degrees of success, and last year's Natural dancers succeeded in persuading a few of our more timid souls that one is not expected to be unduly graceful at first, and never exotically interpretive. Thus more converts have been added to the fold. Even though we have all enjoyed the winter sports, it is nice to have the spring term to look forward to with its great variety of sports to choose from, and the harrowing choices we are compelled to make. Most of us wish we could try our hands at everything. Tennis, track, baseball, swimming, archery and riding are scheduled for this term. Each of the team sports has its big day when the colour teams compete, and we are looking forward to the horseshow as one of the most exciting events of the school year. Altogether we feel that this has been the best season yet, athletically speaking. We can't help feeling proud of our invincible hockey team, but we are all of us aware that we owe our various triumphs to Miss Sayre. FAITH CRANDALL, A. A. Secretary. Assistant Business Manager This year we have seen two groups of one-act plays, and are looking forward to two more performances this spring. Scenes from Romeo and Juliet , Richard II , Cymbeline'i, and Twelfth Night are to be presented in the outdoor theatre. The casts for these plays have already been posted, and rehearsals have started. The first group of plays should by all means go down in history, mainly for two reasons: One of them is that Bobbie Delrano, looking delectable, and being excruciatingly funny, did a Cornelia Otis Skinner to perfection. It is a dreary thought to consider what would happen to most of us if we were suddenly confronted with a huge audience, and. expected to put on a one man show. Secondly, we all take off our best, Sunday-go-to-meeting bonnets to the noble souls fi.e. almost the entire castj, who, during the performance of The Monkeys Paw , upon forgetting their lines, not in the least perturbed, ad libbed the entire third act and most of the second with admirable aplomb, so that nobody ever knew about it until almost a week later. The second group of plays, instead of being a let-down as is usually the case after a good start, lived up to, and surpassed our expectations in every way. The Hrst play on the program, Two Crooks and a Lady was a gangster melodrama complete with robbings, killings and phoney telephone calls. fNo pun intended! Bamby de Greeff gave a realistic performance as Lucille, the maid with the pretty face, and the unpredictable nervous system, and Peggy Thomas was quite divine as the tough egg whom Babbie Gillespie, as the crippled old lady, cracked with no tool but a coldly cultured voice, never stirring from her wheelchair, and not even lifting a paralyzed finger to bring the criminal to justice. Aggie Magruder and Dottie Critchlow successfully demonstrated the comforting fact that the long arm of the law inevitably finds its prey, and Jane-Louise Harvey, the oh-so-English companion, bedecked in her roommate's second best hat turned wrong side around, did herself up brown. At the Rising of the Moon went over beautifully without a hitch, a tribute to Patsy Hubbard's noble efforts in producing Irish accents wholesale in the unaccustomed larynxes of the cast. Sandy Van Ness was a perfect joy as the policeman whose lot was not one of the happier ones, and whose gestures laid us in the aisles. Frances Alderman as the peddler, an alias for some quite unbelievable and thoroughly unpronounceable Irish name, was verv fine. We congratulate these two girls in particular as well as the other members of the clalstiviind ,the wonderful individual offstage who whistled At the Rising of t e oon .
