N M Dedication As we travel the many pathways through Madeira, one man comes to mind as promoter and co-ordinator of all aspects of our high school lives. To those who have sought assistance, he has been a wise and generous counselor. Many years as assistant principal, head of the Guidance and Testing Programs and Executive Secretary of the Greater Cincinnati Association of Student Councils have earned him recognition as lan thciencyll among administrators. A man of diverse interests, however, is needed to cope with the varied problems of a principal. Besides being a horticulturalist who takes pride in the magic of his green thumb, he is also a lively musician for whom the piano and organ provide few complexities. It is the leadership of men like him that gives light to our often darkened pathways in life. We, the Class of 1967, dedicate our Mnemonic to you, Mr. Frank R. Lang. Time out for relaxation. Dericks The ultimate goal of all of us is to become suc- cessful. Our dreams and aspirations have as many different forms as there are x-vays of fulfilling Onejs ambitions Within and around high school, itself, there are many paths to success which cross and run parallel to each other. The recog- nition and following of these previously laid out paths is a fundamental tenet of formal education. Granted, one can learn much from the footsteps of those who have travelled a path to success, but self-conEnement t0 the well-wom road may lead the student into a rut Where creativity and ambi- tion are not rewarded. The only diflerence be- tween a rut and a grave is that a grave has an end to it. Assistant Principal- Mr. Robert M. Baas 'W It is my keenest desire that high school experi- ences of members of the graduating Class Of 1967 have led each through various paths. I hope the paths have Challenged each studentls efforts and caused him to explore many fields of human en- deavor. But this is not enough. It is important that everyone has the compelling urge to discover a new path and with the spirit of the frontiersman follows it to some desirable terminal. Then, in the centuries to come, some Other high school stu- dent can traverse that path in preparation to End- ing his own. It is through this ever expanding process that mankind enlarges his knowledge of the universe to better serve his Creator, his fellow men and himself. H. L. Dericks Principal Mother always said there would be days like this. 13 12uS! Football Despite a shaky start, our Mustangs won three of their last four games to post a four won, four lost, one tied season record. The leadership of Senior tri-captains Tom Hayman, Steve Salt, and Dave Wipper and the experience of Head Coach Bill HoHeld, line coach Bill Williamson, and reserve coach EchW Cham- berlain made our team one of which to be proud. After an opening win against Goshen, the team worked on rebuilding. This paid OH with an upset Homecoming Victory over Mariemont, an easy win at New Richmond and a shut-out vic- tory over Deer Park in the M.H.S. HSnow Bowl? Recognized for their contribution to the team and the game are Tom Hayman, Most Valuable Back; Steve Mueller, Most Valuable Lineman; and Steve Salt, Most Valuable Player. Cheerleaders Our Cheerleaders are a vivacious and enthusi- astic group of girls. Both Varsity and junior Varsity squads are made up of six members elected by the student body each spring. Besides their regular duties of leading Cheers at all games, the girls participate in many other spirit bolstering activities. The Cheer- leaders play a major part in planning successful pep rallies. At these pep rallies, the cheerleaders lead cheers, teach new ones, and often present highly original skits. When not cheering at games, practicing, or planning pep rallies, the girls, in co-operation with the Pep Club, can often be seen selling bus tickets to our away games, plastering the walls with posters, or coming up with other gim- micks to generate enthusiasm for our teams Everyone at M.H.S. will surely agree that our Cheerleaders do a great job when it comes to kindling school spirit. After heart breaking losses to Mariemont and Sycamore, the Mustangs came back and fought hard to win the majority of the games remaining. As for the players, Trefzger led the team in both scoring and rebounding and Gregg stopped many a score by his excellent defensive perfor- mances. Tom Hayman, also a very proliEc scorer, pulled down many clinch rebounds as did Mark Russele a herce competitor. Bill Schmalfuss, the Mustang playmaker, was also very successful in scoring and had Hue offensive play. Mark Ste- venson, an excellent passer and rebounder, was a very conscientious defensive player. The hockey season begins in September and continues into late fall with practices every week. This year both the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams received new uniforms consisting of blue kilts with gold blouses and kneesoeks. Due to the contin- uous bad weather in November, only Eve games were played. The Varsity record was Ow2w3 and the Junior Varsity record was a commend- able 570. The Varsity team cont sisting of Juniors and Seniors ended the season with a 3-2 record, while the combined ePforts 0f the freshman and sophomore Junior Varsity team went UNDEFEATED. Both teams did very well considering their lack of experience in this sport, The girls, coached by Mrs. Clara Piskor, practiced two and three times a week besides the days on which games were played. Girlsi Interscholastic Basketball Girls? Basketball is the most competitive sport sponsored by G.A.A. at Madeira Over 110 girls try out for the Varsity and junior Varsity teams, but only 25 make it. The practices are ex- hausting, but the satisfaction of winning is great. Monday and Friday afternoons are the girls, day for the gym, and you can rest assured that theyTe putting it to good use. Whether ifs running laps or doing passing drills theyire constantly building up team spirit to face the opponent. Girls, Basket bail is much like boys7 except for the fact that a girlsi team has four stationary players and two roving players. Mrs. Clara Piskor, Head Basket- ball Coach, scheduled eight games with other schools. The girls should be given credit for their constant ambition and team spirit. Two members of this yeafs council, Biff Black and Bruce NIerritt, were elected President and Vice- president of the EHL Sportsmanship Council. The four year course offered is designed to prepare a girl for household manage- ment and to act as a prerequisite for college Home Economics. The Industrial Arts Department at Madeira consists of courses in mechanical drawing, elec- tronics, wood and metal working, and industrial arts. These courses, taught by Mr. Zarley, give practical training in electricity, building, Enishing, designing, and drafting. The Madeira High library has a wide and varied collection of books especially geared to the needs of the high school student. Ably directed by Mrs. Lyon, our library is a quiet place for study and research. Library hdrs. Durmhy Lyon Library Faculty Index ALLEN, SALLY A. A.B. Western College for Women MA. Busy with attendance, Juniors The optimistic Junior Class of 1967 has just completed their busiest year to date, Starting in September, the Juniors were faced with the task of raising money for the annual Junior-Senior Prom to be held in May. By diiigently keeping the candy machines full and by roaming through the football stands peddling their wares, theJuniors managed to reach their goal7 and honored the Seniors with the social highlight of the year This year Juniors began to look ahead toward college. Taking college boards proved to be a diHicult task but we are confident that this class of 568 did quite well; time will tell. Next year with our school in the hands of these competent Juniors, we can visualize nothing but success and well-being for Madeira High School.
