DERICKS 13.5. in Ed., University of Cincinnati M,Ed., Xavier University wiggt The span of years in high school has been, is, and, I am sure, will continue to be a very important segment of an individual's life. The last quarter of a century has seen a change in the lives of young Americans. A quarter of a century ago, free public secondary education was available to all, but certainly a much smaller percentage took advantage of it. In the complex society of recent years, a background of a high school education is extremely essential. As technological advancements are acceleratedwith the various stages of automation, places in society for people without high school training are rare. The need for even more than high school is pointed to with great emphasis . In this year of 1963 a good high school education is an essential for all as aprepara- tion for additional study. It is my sincere desire and the fundamental objective of our school that the educational needs of every student have best been fulfilled in the school year 1962-1963. Mr. Dericks Right: Mr. Dericks always enjoys a good game of chess.

You are fortunate to be gradu- ating in an anniversary year, a time to stop and commemorate the publication of Madeira's first book of memories. It is my wish that your lives will hold many happy anniversaries from the Latin, ANNUS and VERTERE--the annual return of the date of a memorable occasion. Our lives are a series of milestones; it is very important, when the anniversary day comes once again, to look back, down the road we've walked, to be sure we are following the right path and that this path is taking us where we want to go. Our MNEMONICS through the years have recorded and illustrated the achievements of twenty-five years of sincere effort and attention to educate upon the part of the Madeira community. As you pursue your individual paths in the days to come, will you think of what you can do with your training and educatiou to better the community in which you live and to contribute to the better- ment of society?
